I use Houndoom for the same reason, I’m surprised to never even see it appear on peoples’ Reg H tier lists. If I did a tier list I’d have Houndoom in at least C or B tier due to the amount of strong pokemon it walls like Torkoal, Armarouge, Indeedee, and both forms of Typhlosion.
That first battle defines what a real good pokémon battle looks like. Back and forth action and reads. No crazy rng. It doesn't get any better than that.

Another set I like, if not running sash, is throat spray. It’s nice to Snarl opponents while also getting a Special Attack boost for yourself.
It also resists Gholdengo moves
