    From Law & Order: Special Victims Unit Season 5, Episode 2 'Manic': A teenage boy on a manic rampage kills two star basketball players then tries to kill himself, and his defense is a failed course of psychiatric treatment and drugs.

    I know that she was stressed out on all sides, but giving your child a medication likely geared for an adult dosage never ends well. You never give someone underage medication that isn't directly prescribed for them.

    • @queenesther09
      @queenesther09 3 หลายเดือนก่อน +14

      That's certainly true, but I'm not sure she was just stressed... from what I know she knew her son urgently needed help, but was denied pretty much every safe option to get it for him. He was struggling in school and his mental health was deteriorating fast. By the time the medication came, she was basically desperate and saw it as the only remaining possibility to help him.

      And I remembered how things proceeded from here with the plea bargaining. Novak got the defense lawyer to stop looking at the trial for a second and asked if what he was doing was best for Joe. They all agreed that Joe had problems and needed help. If he was found not guilty, he wouldn't do jail time, but he would be back where he was. How long would it be before the mother tried this again with another drug.
      And when the plea bargain came up, his mother hesitated again. That was it for Joe. Joe accepted the plea bargain. Not his mother. He no longer cared about being labeled. He didn't care about the boys he had killed at that moment. He wanted to get better, and he was going to agree to whatever stipulations were put forth to get the help he needed. He no longer trusted his mother to do what was best for him. She was more concerned about keeping him from being labeled than in actually helping him.

      @@ytafan4068 True. She made bad decisions more than once.
      But even having said that, I can't help but feel sympathy for her for the pressure she was under and the lack of decent options to really help her child.
      And she's not entirely wrong that a record of mental health issues could potentially bite you in the butt one day. Another lovely part of the crappy health care system that has only gotten even worse since this was filmed at least 15 years ago. :(

      @@EMILYRIVERA981 True. He really did have serious depression, but the drugs themselves were causing the hallucinations and voices in his head, not his depression.
      If only the court system really worked the way it did in this episode in the real world - could have better regulations over doctors who prescribe medications to patients they haven't seen in years as a backdoor to making them guinea pigs for the drug companies!
      I doubt that if this exact scenario happened in the real world the lawyers could or would have teamed up to get the kid to plea out to a mental defect defense (which was in his best interest) AND go for the throats of the greedy drug company CEO who started this chain of events the way they did in the episode.
      They don't go into it, but what that doctor did needs reporting to the medical board, too. He gave his patient list to the drug company which is absolutely against HIPAA rules! :(
