- This clip shows Iraqi Oud master Munir Bashir (1930-1997)and his son Omar Bashir playing in the Arabic scale of Rast. Munir Bashir had a doctorate in musicology from Budapest, and was in constant rebellion against the misinterpretation of this music and it's use for commercial ends. He has been credited with restoring credentials to a music that has become debased through bending to the tasters of colonial nostalgia.

this song is called Pastâ Baghdadiyya and is a popular Iraqi tune... They have recorded it in an album called 'Ud Duet, released in 1998
Im an Israeli, and my family is from Iraq. munir bashir is one of my favorite players. when my grandmother and grandfather were forced to leave Iraq in the fifties, they considered themselves "arab jews" - their culture was arabic. they would listen to oum cultum from the kahir radio and cry. Also there were very good Iraqi jews classical arabic music players as well, for instance Yousuf el awad, and kanun player Abraham salman. I wish I could travel to bagdad. SALAM

I was there - ani hayiti sham. in 2009. Did sing "al naharot bavel" in bab'ilim as it is so called.--
Visited ur - and a mosque which read over the entry - in arabic which I read " maqam ( makom) waladat nabi Allah ibrahim khalil.
The .music of ashararq al awsat is in my heart.
I studied ud with a master from amasya, Turkey and am familiar with turkish maqam.
Many years ago I did go to a concert with munir Bashir to perform at the symphony space theater in nyc - but cancelled due to his passing.
I have seen Omar in concert - magnificent.
Look for iraqi master; nasser sham'aa. He is truly a virtuoso on oud. I picked up a CD of his music in Baghdad..a concert he performed no less 2013 in texas.

A beautiful collaboration between two masters. This Maqam would be the Avazeh Afshari in Persian music. Peace be with everyone, music and the arts transcend all ethnic, religious, national, and any other type of boundaries. Music is the universal language that unites all peoples.
It looks like I'm the only one here with latin descendence....... It's great to see how manny people from different countries And cultures can join In one place just to listen to This magnificent pice of music
I find it very interesting to hear this. It has given me a new and different perspective on music. Western music, with its 12-tone scale, has its beauty and so does this. These are masterful musicians, who put their souls into their playing. They are to be commended for their superb artistry.

When I listen to the sound of oud everything around me gains a different,mysteriously charming view..! It makes me look inside and find things I would never have found otherwise..!

Jews lived in the Fertile Crescent and Nile Valley for many, many centuries before these lands (i.e., Israel/Palestine, Lebanon, Syria, Iraq & Egypt) were conquered by the Muslims and became Arabic-speaking areas. I don't believe most Jews in the Arab World ever came to identify themselves as "Arab," though I know many began to do so once they landed in Ashkenazi-dominated Israel (1949-1951).
