    Hi Lizzie! I'd love to see more styling/ fall inspiration / transitional weather looks type of videos from you! I really love your video on Smart Casual looks and find that I go back to it a lot. I like your creative lookbooks too, but that simple tripod setup worked just fine in my opinion. I love your style, but I'd love to see something other than vlogs- without having to be over complicated if you simply don't have the time! Love from Sweden🌻

    It shrunk because of the way the yarns where made. Wool in general shrinks (the yarns are spun&twisted together). Merino yarns are usually high spun and don’t tend to shrink as much because there’s generally less space between the fibres for it to clump together. The America vintage looks like more of a combed / low spun wool. So .... it shrunk. Has very little to do with the alpaca - I have a wool/alpaca/acrylic sweater that I can literally throw in the dryer and nothing comes of it. Rule of thumb is if it’s a sleek smooth wool - probably won’t shrink / will shrink less. If it’s fuzzy/fluffy then there’s a high chance it will shrink hope that helps!

    Lizzy could you do a testing basics on thin knit black polo necks please? They are a basic for winter and I use them so much in layering. Also, with the cardigans, it’s a pity you didn’t include an M&S one. They are so good for basics too, and easily accessible for most people. I know, I know, there is a kind of a “granny” aspect to people’s perception of M&S but they do carry surprising pieces at times. And no, I don’t work there! 😂😂 Great video as always.i thought the Joseph cardigan was streets ahead of the others for pure good looks.

      I'll second M&S! I found a beautiful camel-colored wool coat there a few years ago, and it gets compliments all the time. Everyone is surprised when I tell them it is M&S!

    Love this series.
    I would really like to see a testing basics for tailored trousers that are more autumn/winter appropriate, so something like wool pants. I know that you did tailored pants a while back, but feel that those were more summery. Sometimes I get sick of wearing jeans and want something different, but find that it is quite difficult to find pants that look good and are warm at the same time.

    I'm sorry the American Vintage cardigan was ruined by the wash, but there is reason why it says to hand wash. Alpaca wool is a luxurious material and needs the extra care. Even though you used cold water, the tumbling action of the washer is what actually distorted the cardigan. Alpaca needs gentle and light handling otherwise it will distort, so hand washing is an absolute must! If you cannot be bothered to hand wash, then you might want to steer clear from purchasing articles using alpaca. Hope this helps!!

      Lizzy, you could try soaking it in hair conditioner to loosen the fabric fibres and then gently stretching it out as it dries - maybe that will help to unshrink it. Fingers crossed!

    • @shannon3375
      @shannon3375 6 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      I've actually tried this trick! During a trip back home my mom accidentally machine washed a wool sweater that I loved and it shrunk so much! Unfortunately, the trick didn't work for me. I repeated it several times and it maybe stretched out a few centimeters, but sadly it was still unwearable. You could certainly try it and I hope it works for you, but from the looks of it I'm not sure even conditioner could help :(

    • @krystynaspark
      @krystynaspark 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Ohh :( I've actually never tried it so that's good to know, it did seem a bit too good to be true.

    • @shannon3375
      @shannon3375 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      It might work with knitwear that has a low percentage of wool and that didn't shrink a massive amount?? It's just a shame that it happened since it was a pricier item. I'd still give it a try anyways. It didn't work for me but may work for you. Never know unless you try!

  • @Nubianette

    I think alpaca is usually a wider weave, to allow for fuzziness. Usually best to wash with baby shampoo, by hand. The Joseph was my favorite. You’d notice the value after 8, 12, or more years. I prefer a wool/silk blend. I have one, super thin, and so warm! Looked perfect for 10 years, until I accidentally washed it. The stitching frayed near the collar. It’s been 18 years, and I still wear it under jackets. It’s a thermal piece. I bought on clearance for about $60, but it was originally around $300.

    I think that they can do something to some wool to prevent it from shrinking and felting. I studied textiles and we sometimes try to actively shrink wool jumpers and they wouldn't even though they should with heat and agitation, it is always wise to go with the instructions! Love how you put I all the materials because I always need to know what clothes are made of!

    Great video. And I love this series always. I do wonder would you ever do a testing basics where the 5 comparisons are all high street and within a similar price range of each other? Considering the majority of people are likely to be high street shoppers, you'd really be comparing basics then. Your budget could be set by the average people send on something. So for example a person might spend 50-80 on a good jumper, 30-50 on a average top, xx on trousers, more on coats etc, even more for infrequent leather jacket buy etc. But this doesn't mean I don't love this series the way you do it now, just that there's normally 2-3 of the 5 out of my price range always. Love your vibe and videos. X

      Sharon Crowley if she knows already why not put it on her editing maybe correct herself. because i was confused the whole time and thankful someone said it

    • @arguchik
      @arguchik 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I hear you - I was confused at first too, because it was kind of hard to see the neckline with her hair covering it. I only really figured out that she had used the wrong word when she held the sweaters up again at the end. I'm sure Bettye's comment is helpful to many - definitely didn't mean to imply otherwise! My point was just that Lizzy herself probably already knows the correct term. Her reply to a comment further downstream basically says "oops, I said the wrong word" (I'm paraphrasing, despite the quotation marks). Maybe I confuse words more than most people, because it's totally understandable to me that someone would not catch an error like that through the editing process - because that has happened to me (in writing rather than on video, though).

    Love your testing basics videos. I think it would be interesting to do it also with all pieces in the same price range. Because ultimately in the format you’re doing now, you’re weighing price vs quality/style, which is valuable, but still it would be helpful to just compare pieces in terms of quality and style etc.

    Hi!! Love this series. That & Other stories cardigan is sooo lovely. Just wanted to say that I typically wash woolen pullovers and cardigans on low temperature programs that have minimum drum rotation during the wash. That keeps the garments from being damaged. I think the threads get damaged if you use higher drum rotation. Hope this was useful :) xxx

    What kind of detergent did you use on all of them when washing? I wash all my wool sweaters in the washing machine and never had anything shrunk like that. It only happens to my mother because she forgets to use a wool detergent.
    Honestly, I hate buying clothes that can't be machine washed. I can't be bothered with special care instructions.

    The cardigan that shrunk wasn’t superwash! Wool can be treated to be safe in the wash, or if it is blended with a synthetic fiber it can be safe in the wash, but natural wool will always felt (the fibers stick together and shrink) in the wash. A way around it is to hand wash wool objects with a wool wash and lay them flat to dry. Alpaca is just as likely to felt as sheep’s wool or cashmere.

    Merino cardigan does not worth 200+. It is enough to buy a decent cashmere... I think you can get a good one from M&S. When you put cashmere and merino side to side, and really start wearing cashmere, there is no return. Cashmere is soooo soft and warm. You will never go back to those scratchy wool again! (merino is not scratchy, but it cannot compare with cashmere in terms of softness and warmth).

    I agree with others that you should never put fine fabrics in the dryer, but I have a 100% alpaca sweater I bought more than 15 years ago which does just fine in the washing machine. It actually looks almost the same as it did when I bought it, except for areas where the fibers have been rubbed under the arms. None of my alpaca items have ever done what that sweater did. The way that it shrank I would attribute to the wool in it, which can react to being battered by the agitation of a washer.
    I think your pothos needs a slightly less sunny spot; it's looking leggy. ;)

    If you used normal washing detergent that would have ruined the wool. You have to use the ‘delicates’ washing liquid. Xx

    Iv’e had luck with soaking the sweater and stretching it back into shape on a flat surface and left to dry flat.

    Your cardigan shrunk because the wool it was made of was not superwash. Natural wool (lambs wool, alpaca etc) felts when you rub it while the wool is wet. Wool that has superwash treatment does not felt. The superwash treatment, however, uses very harmful chemicals (chlorine) and in knitting-world superwash yarn is not what trendy people use :)
