Martha Wash VS. C&C Music Factory | The Breakdown with Dara Starr Tucker

  • One of the greatest scandals in pop music history -- Singer Martha Wash was ripped of not once, but twice by major record labels who thought she was good enough to be heard, but not seen.
Her hits with C&C Music Factory "Gonna Make You Sweat" and BlackBox "Everybody, Everybody" were and are ubiquitous in pop culture, but very few people know the singer behind them.

She was right on! Music sadly went downhill after video's started adjusting for visuals instead of the talent. My Lord Martha Wash is exceptional! Bless her for standing up and fighting for what is right!!

Thank goodness Martha pushed, sued and got her flowers publicly.

Right on, Ms. Tucker! You covered this Martha Wash exploitation topic as well as anyone could in three minutes I think. I learned of her from Sylvester albums (listened to one of him today, too.) I also have Two Tons O'Fun, The Two Tons and Weather Girls albums and Martha Wash solo CDs. When I first saw that "Gonna Make You Sweat (Everybody Dance Now)" video, I thought, "waiiiit a minute...size aside, that does not look like Martha Wash's face." I'd seen the "It's Raining Men" video and them with Sylvester on American Bandstand before that. Similar with Black Box. I hate weight shaming, theft of proper credit and dishonesty to the public. I'm going to seek out that whole Arsenio Hall interview of her. Congratulations to Ms. Wash on her perseverance and victory.

I would rather look at “The Real person” singing a song. Sony AND C&C are so wrong for their deception. #MarthaWashForever

I did not realize that Black Box used the vocals of Martha Wash. Didn't they also get sued for sampling Loleatta Holloway? Obviously not fair in either case.

I looked these songs and it wouldn't have mattered to me to show the original singer. She was great, because i remember her when marsha Wash was in the group Two Tons of Fun. And before that she sang with Sylvester in You Make me Feel mighty Real" they are the best

They could have at least hired an imposter who looked convincing as the real singer.

I am so shocked. Black Box, C and C. These groups I absolutely loved in my college day's. So massively disappointed. Martha Wash has an amazing voice, I so didn't know. Glad she sued. Everybody prefers the real deal. Only dreamers think that image sells, unfortunately it does. But I still prefer the original.

@@msreen269 I think what he's referring to is the fact that LL made "Doing It" based on the featured rapper LaShauns original record "WildThang" recorded years earlier. Her opening line "Doing it and doing it and doing it well..." ended up becoming the chorus / hook for LLs song. He and his producers even sampled the same song LaShauns people used for the "WildThang" beat. 🤷🏾‍♂️

Everyone is rightly pissed off at the labels, but can we just acknowledge that the black singers were more than happy to backstab one of their own for fame and money? The models could have said no. Unfortunately, for every one that says no, there are one hundred ready to betray their own to get that check.
