for a laptop this old, a Linux Distribution would be better and that can be light on resources. My recommendations would be: Ubuntu Mate 24.04, Linux Lite, Xubuntu, Lubuntu or Linux Mint XFCE edition. the desktop enviroments are resource light and will make this laptop feel like new again.
3:00 probably want to get a matching set of ram so you get full dual channel, it matters more on AMD chips due to how speed sensitive they are and also that it's an APU.
I run Linux Mint Cinnamon on an HP DV6 (slightly older/weaker version of your machine) and it does fine. I use it for ripping DVDs for my Plex server, web browsing, etc. I upgraded mine to SSD and 8gb ram, I also invested in a new battery and replaced the thermal paste on the CPU heat sink. The poor thing went from barely able to boot Windows 10 to quite useable for most everyday tasks.
I used to use Windows Media Center all the time to record my shows. Like when I left for bootcamp I came back and it had recorded every show I watched so I missed out on nothing (this was before on demand was really a thing lol) Glad to see you messing around with it
Any of the lighter versions of Linux will probably work well. I use Lubuntu and WattOS on Intel Atom machines that run reasonably well. I was surprised recently to try out the Vulkan renderer for Duckstation (in the emulator settings) and had Gran Turismo 2 running well on a J1900 Bay Trail machine with integrated graphics. It's nice how little power some of these machines can use and still perform everyday tasks.
hi, recently found you channel and am now looking through your old videos, keep up the good work could you maybe put the cpu name in the video description too ? i think i got one from the same generation also if you haven't sold it, could you test some more games ? many thanks
Linux mint Mate or EFXE would be a good choice, cinnamon uses slightly more resources. Any modern Linux distro should be just fine. Please don't use stock Ubuntu, though. Also, if this laptop is so old it could use a repaste. I have an HP pavilion from the same era and after giving a good clean, new thermal paste, it ran so much better, quieter, and better performance. This old of thermal paste is literally hard, like I had to use a knife to clean mine. Good luck.
@@basicdadtech So Mint OS is the distribution (it has the kernel (the thing that makes the hardware usable for the end user), drivers, packages, features…) and XFCE is an option for GUI/UX (graphical user interface/ user experience look and feel). People prefer it over the default mint OS DE (desktop environment) for old/“weak” hardware. Cinnamon (the default DE for mint OS) will be just fine, it uses about the same system resources as Windows 7 in my experience, but XFCE is more lightweight and give you more of a Windows vista/XP experience. But both options are the same OS under the hood and both will have the same hardware support and all the modern feature and newest software that are not available for older Windows OS that are end of life support.
My HP Pavilion DV7 died out of no where yesterday! The HDD light just stays solid red, completely black screen! I've tried power cycle, resetting the ram sticks, won't even boot Boot menu! Is it toast??
Greetings to you I do have a HP pavilion DV seven. I would like to know what kind of hard drive did you put in there? The other thing to that I would like to know and you know need to get back to me right away is did you upgrade the ram, and how much can you put in and what’s the biggest hard drive? Can you put in because I have one myself I bought it many years ago. Thanks for putting up this video. Hopefully, you’ll get back to me.

This is exactly what I was going to suggest. For something different you could also do a Unix like OS called Haiku.
@@jimpyle99 Can you game on haiku, I remember seeing a video about it but still don't know much about it
Three suggestions for Linux: Chrome OS, Ubuntu, or Debian!.
Thank you. I forgot about Chrome OS.

This is a very good point and it’s worth a try.

Bodhi Linux. It's lighter then Linux Lite, Xubuntu, Lubuntu & Mint and it doesn't skimp on the features
I was gifted one of these not too long ago. I was thinking of using it for DVD ripping, analog conversion, and some light emulation. Excellent video.
I like to use Linux Mint Mate for older computers

i think this laptop would be good with roblox with an fps unlocker (shift + f5 shows your fps as 60 without it)

The cpu for this is AMD A8-4500M.

Someone else mentioned EFXE. What’s the difference between Linux Mint and Mint XFXE ?

That’s a bummer. Not sure.
