Ο συμπαθέστατος Άγγλος Κωμικός και Μουσικός, DUDLEY MOORE με το τρίο του. Απόσπασμα, από την εκπομπή Not Only But Also (Peter Cook, Dudley Moore) στο BBC. - Επιμέλεια Αλέξανδρος Μολφέσης
These early recordings are true treasures. This one, especially so. Agree with many of the other comments. Dudley's jazz performances and compositions are so wonderful--superb musicianship and creativity. This trio really swings. Thank heaven for the internet and the people who post, so that we can access these gems. I read that Dudley once said he wanted his tombstone to read, "He died and rose again." Well, maybe this has come true, in a sense, such that we can know his worth and be so blessed to know him (and his trio) in this way. Rest in Peace Dudley. And thanks. We miss you and love you.
He wasn't just versatile, or an actor who could play the piano - this standard of musicianship only comes from putting in 2,3,4 hours per day for 20+ years. Amazingly, he also had a talent for acting.
EXACTLY. Well reminded! BRAVO, Dudley Moore, HARD-working sweetheart and ... ok ... yeah ... let's face it, when you take it ALL into consideration: Genius! We're all sooo grateful ... and RIP too, brilliant, brilliant Peter Cook. You two; RULED AND REIGN! Enthusiastically yourn, - V.
I think it's worth bearing something in mind here: it's one thing to play "straight" piano and organ to a high standard (which DM could by a young age given he was awarded an Organ Scholarship at Magdalen College, Oxford); this in itself takes not only innate talent but the discipline, study and application to realise that talent. However performing jazz and leading a trio - and I mean creditably - means acquiring another completely different set of skills from those required to play " straight" so this was one hugely talented and hard working individual we're seeing here. Oh he was also a comic actor .....
It was Ronnie Scott's and buying tickets in those days was different. My then boyfriend used to book a table for dinner well in advance on a night the Dudley Moore Trio were playing there.
Rediscovering this talented man who we almost took for granted when we were young is quite moving. He was one of our great comic actors, who also played jazz, but seeing these performances it seems that jazz was his passion.
Dudley was certainly "one of a kind" - a very gifted musician and entertainer. But don't overlook the significance of the input from the other two members of this tightly integrated trio. Double bassist Pete McGurk (who passed too soon in 1968) could almost swing you off the floor with his drive, technique and tone, and drummer Chris Karan's contribution on this item is, as always, superb, swinging perfection.
according to PHIL KENT, writing on "dudleymoore.co.uk", he states that peter mcgurk died june 18th 1968 & that his fumeral service was held at WORTHING crematorium june 25th 1968. acording to DISCOGS.com, he was born 12.31.27 & DIED june 17th, 1968. and since the 1969 recording of "the dudley moore trio" lists JEFF CYNE on bass, well, i'm inclined to think that brother mcgurk did indeed DIE in 1968. was IS indisputable is that brother D & his trio never got/get the props they deserve on this side of the pond when talking about jazz. pity that, scandalous even. dudley moore-short brother, GIANT soul.
Your on the money my friend My thoughts Dud was a gifted musician his God given talent was in his hands he should pursued his music career where were all his so called movie star buddies when he needed them the most ?? No Where to be seen I remember him saying when he was diagnosed with degenerative brain illness the thing he missed the most was not being able to play the piano...I THINK THAT SAYS IT ALL...:(
I wish I had known back in the day how brilliant a musician this guy was. Wow. , I am in awe of this mans talent, both as a musician and an actor/comedian. What a shame he died the way he did. .
And when he was dying, he was so disrespected because his critics did not understand thahe was suffering from a debilitating illness and attributed the illness to drinking, including that cun! Liza Minelli and her flat singing voice. What a cow she is.
I knew that he played piano, but I had never heard him play, so I wasn’t sure which style he played. Hearing this my God I’m just amazed at his excellence. Rest in peace dear man, you are sorely missed😭😔
@@michaelillingworth6433 Thank you very much Michael ,I had heard it before but completely forgotten about it.I was brought up on the Pete & Dud sketch type things along with Spikr Milligan , The Goons ,Kenneth Horn etc all gifted comedians and some very accomplished musicians and singers too.
and Erroll Garner, all over the place! Dudley ADORED the genius Erroll Garner - and you can tell. -- I was lucky enough to have heard Oscar P. play in Canada - Stratford -- in 1978. WEOWE !!! Wish I could've heard Erroll Garner, that's for sure. WOW!!!!
Dudley was brilliant. I used to watch him on 'Not Only But Also', in the mid 60s, he always had a slot with his trio. My Dad played a bit of jazz, and he loved it too.
I never heard him play other than 'Same To You Doubled'(?) which has the distinction of being one of the funniest instrumentals ever written. This is truly great stuff.
There’s a touch of Oscar Peterson there. Superb. We lost a great musician and comedian when Dud went. So glad he passed our way and that we have a few recordings to remember him by.
Even in his music, the comic in him still came out. In the 1970's he released a jazz album. The front of the cover was a picture of two hands on the keyboard and on top of the piano, a framed photograph of Dudley Moore, gently smiling for the camera. The back cover was the keyboard lid dropped on the hands and the picture of Dudley screaming with pain!
Art Tatum was his guy. If you really want to see and hear something jaw dropping, Go listen to John T Williams playing Jazz Piano 20 years before he wrote the starwars theme song. John was a jazz BEAST! I mean... He was HEAVY! Also, Fred Rogers ( Mister rogers neighborhood ) was also legendary on piano.
@@breakfastplan4518 Interesting. Had no idea.JW was a jazz pianist. It's as if playing jazz piano was a calling card for so many musicians who operated around Los Angeles and Hollywood who later became famous for doing other things: Previn and JW spring to mind. I remember hearing somewhere that JW and Previn sometimes even played on each other's sessions as session musicians in the early days of their careers.
Hope you have a wonderful night listening to all the music. I have been a huge Dudley Moore fan since I was a kid in the 80s for all his comic moments. I have been involved in music since I was in my early teens but never really associated Moore with the music side as much as the movie comedy side. Played Guitar since I was 14 yrs old and only the last few yrs I have become more interested in piano. I now am learning piano much more and I love so much classical and now Jazz also from Tatum to the latest offerings. Dudley's passion is what infects me and has triggered in me more of this musical side also. These moments caught on camera are so precious. Music is always win and Dudley's love for the arts he was involved in keeps my world moving forward in such a dark world we are all encountering these days. He brings light and a brighter future of hope for me. I'm sure he is a beacon of light wherever he is at right ow also...R.I.P Dudley...deeply missed by so many.

Very much a mixture of Errol Garner and Peterson in his style. Dudley was hugely underrated in the early 70s......his popularity surged with the film "Arthur". RIP xx
Well, he used to swing on piano a fair amount on TV with Peter Cook ... and also in the show they did before their comedy duo time: Beyond the Fringe w/ Jonathan Miller and Alan Bennett, which started his whole brilliant career going.
In the early years of Dudley's disease many people in Hollywood thought he had become a drunkard. I can only imagine what that must have been like for him. No doubt he was afraid. He knew something was seriously wrong and had no idea why, yet he gradually got worse and worse, never knowing *how* much worse it would get. Yet he had to go through it alone. Everyone had turned their backs on him. And I mean EVERYONE. He lived with a caretaker until he died and considered her the only family he had. I hope everyone who mistreated him regretted it until their dying day.
Is there a better British jazz pianist? He had the lot, time, swing, style, language, technique...top top class musician.

I love this clip because it’s rare footage of Dudley genuinely enjoying himself. So many talents but jazz piano was his soul.
One of the most swinging Jazz piano trios to ever exist and not well known enough, probably, but Dudley is an absolute gem for us jazz pianists.
The more I listen to Dudley, the more I realise he was first and foremost a superb musician and a gifted comedic actor second.
Dudley was extraordinarily brilliant.
Probably the best pianist next to oscar Peterson !
yes, but there was 'cigarette papers thickness' between the two gifts. I really miss him...

Dudley could play anything. His classical performances are mind-blowing as well!
He played a lot more than jazz. I attended a concert where he played Gershwin's Concerto in F perfectly.
Beyond doubt his great passion .
Very sadly his illness prevented him from playing towards the end of his life.
Unforgettable though !! 😊
God bless wonderful Dud. He loved playing jazz and Bach every day. A true genius.
