Forbidden love: relationship between between islamic and jewish struggles and portrayed between 2 men also underlying message of gay love. She is a master of going through your soul!!
I’ve had to comment again... watching her rise on the cross had made me tingle all over! And yes watching it live was one of the most magical and moving things I’ve ever seen live. It was just so bright and sparkly in the arena... just amazing! ❤️
There is something important to Madonna's tours: Allways change her versions of her music! Every tour is music is different, even she sang the same song
Exactly ! She has made so many versions of her owns songs and they are ALWAYS good, it's unbelievable ! Like how many times she has rearranges Vogue for example. She's a genius !
"Live To Tell" is on her True Blue album/CD. It does not contain the church like organ sounds. The song is also featured on the movie At Close Range. Powerful ballad from Madonna
“Live to tell” is the Madonna’s most personal song (since it’s about sexual abuse) but more clearly is about a “secret”. In regards of this particular performance she moved the subject on something that we all know but we don’t wanna see and specially talk about.❤️🙏 Obviously with Forbiden Love her intension is to talk about the relationship between different cultures/religions; and at the end of the day love always wins. As Italian-iranian gay guy grow up between Iran, Italy and UK I’m so grateful to artists like Madonna that speak about these difficult matters in such brave way. ✌️🙏👏🏻
Madonna’s song choices during tours are usually made to further the overal narrative of the show and message she wishes to deliver to the audience. She often uses songs from her back catalogue but then flips the songs meaning or adds another dimension, like the “Like a Virgin” performance which references her being thrown from her horse and breaking multiple bones (thus the x-rays, which include actual x-rays of her body after the fall). She plays around with lyrical content in combination with visual delivery! Which makes her the best pop performance artist ever, she created the mold for shows like this! I saw this show three times, twice front row in Amsterdam and once in Düsseldorf! Her absolute best tour ever, in top form in every department!
This concert was breathtaking, eargasmic, visually stunning, and artistically brilliant. Live to tell is altered somewhat sonically but yes this is how it happened in the show.
The ballad she sings on the cross is LIVE TO TELL from 1986 !The song was a huge international hit (number 1 in the US ) and it was also a critical acclaim track with a more mature Madonna !
I’ve always loved and admired that Madonna would not just ask her dancers to do intricate moves like the arms symbolism during forbidden Love, but join in as well herself. The amount of rehearsals and timing is well, indicative of any Madonna tour. So much going on both visually as well as sonically. I loved the album and this tour was an epic realization for it. Your reactions are great in that it’s making me take another look and listen to things I may have even missed...and I may have watched this tour and TH-cam clips a few...um...times...as well as live in concert. Simply iconic.
"Forbidden Love" has actually nothing to do with homosexuality. It's about races and religions. In that performance you can see two men with the muslim sign and the jewish sign on their chests. They do a choreography where they try to hold hands but they can't find the way, representing the eternal war between Israel and the Islamic countries. In the screens behind them you can see the history of religions and races. It all starts with a single cell dividing itself and forming the symbols of all religions in a blood stream. Meaning we all come from the same origin, we are all one, we are all brothers, the line "once upon a time the was a boy and there was a girl" is a reference to Adam and Eve, the origin of all mankind. And at the end you can see the religious symbols colliding into each other and returning to the blood stream and finally becoming one single cell again. All mankind returning to the original unity.
the star of david and the crescent tattoos on the dancers during Forbidden Love represent the constant unrest in the middle east between Israel and the Palestine.. she is advocating for peace between the 2 countries and although Madonna has been studying the Torah and a Kabbalah follower, she also championed the freedom of the Palestinians and their rights over their land grabbed by the Israelis.
Dereck you were saying that you hoped that live in person it was as powerful as what your watching & I was at this tour & the DVD or any of the videos don’t do it justice, when I saw this live and I had a really good seat for the show it was extraordinary that is the only word I can use it was powerful, emotional, amazing. I have been to 10 of her 11 Tours and this is by far in my top 5 favourite performances that I have seen her do live the only Tour I missed was her very first tour The Virgin Tour 1985 but this performance of Live To Tell just left me speechless when she was done. She’s only performed Live To Tell 3 times in concert, She performed it on her Who’s That Girl Tour 1987, The Blonde Ambition Tour 1990 & Confessions Tour 2006 & I have seen all 3 of them live & this version is the best & it was a single for the movie “At Close Range” for her at the time husband Sean Penn. every true Madonna fan loves & adores this song. & it was a huge commercial success, becoming Madonna's 3rd #1 single on the Billboard Hot 100 and her first #1 single on the Adult Contemporary chart. This is by far 1 of her best songs to date.
The interesting thing about Madonna’s concerts is that they are not only a pop show but they leave a message, wake up conciouss , shake minds, starts discussions, it’s interesting how she can transform and reinvent her songs and put them on different contexts so that the lyrics fits to the history that she wants to tell. There is no other artist on earth that can put a show like her ever, and never will be!
I remember going to see this show in London. It was soo good. She opens with the disco ball entrance I lost it. She then came back in on the cross it just got better as it went on. Epic show especially seeing her do it live .x
Fun fact: this was the third time Madonna was excommunicated from the Catholic Church. The first was from the Like A Prayer music video with the burning crosses, the second was when she performed Like a Virgin on the Blonde Ambition Tour while simulating masturbation and the third was for propping herself up on a disco cross for this tour ICONIC 😭
The organ riff you're hearing from Live to Tell is a sample of Giorgio Moroder's Tears. Madonna & team stayed true to presenting disco elements into this tour by incorporating mixes and samples of 80's and 70's disco tunes. You will notice this as you go on.
Listen to the studio video version. It doesn't have the church cathedral music by it is by far one of the most stunning beautiful videos that she has ever done. The video has nothing to do with aids. Is part of a movie soundtrack I think. When this video came out the world didn't realize that Madonna could do more than just pop music. I think this song took her to a different plateau. A serious artist, someone to reckon with
I was at this concert in Fresno, CA. The numbers above her head during "live to tell" indicated the number of children in Africa that have been orphaned due to the AIDS pandemic,, this concert was epic in person
"Live to tell" is one of her most iconic ballad (#1 in many countries, including USA, in 1986) and it's a very personal song in which she talks about her being raped when she was 19, so it was her confession. She never opened about the meaning of this song and talked about her being raped until the early 2000s. And this song fits perfectly with the performance and the issue of AIDS deaths in Africa because all these acts acts are cruelties made by the humankind and her standing on the cross symbolizes this: that all humankind should be on the cross for these atrocities
You ‘want to be taken over’ by Madonna because that’s the effect she has. Welcome to the fold. Btw, Live to tell went to no 1 in the 🇺🇸 and no 2 in the 🇬🇧
I am shocked that you were not aware of the ballad “Live To Tell.” It was a HUGE hit for her in the mid/later 80s, but it’s legendary. It was a new high watermark for her as a singer and as a songwriter.
It was epic to see this tour live. It was my first ever Madonna live tour. It all happen exactly as you see in the dvd..!!! Brillant..!!! Unforgettable!!!
You should react to Confessions On A Dance Floor NON-STOP Mix on spotify. The way Forbidden Love transitions into Jump is just brilliant! Those background synths you were so excited about just intertwines with the background music of Jump.
Madonna is the QUEEN Not only because she can sing and dance entertain us she is not afraid to bring important topics to the front where people can not ignore them. Madonna doesn't only sing a song SHE MOVES THE WORLD .
Madonna always mix old songs and news songs in her shows, she also always remix her old song to a modern versions. Finally she always has 4 parts or so, during her tours, where she transits from fun to more serious notes. As for African matter, she has been involved for a long time now in Africa especially MALAWI where she adoptes her kids.
Live to Tell was a long-running Billboard number 1 hit for her back in 1987, from True Blue, her biggest-selling album to date. Its lyrics are open to interpretation, but its stark sonic landscape gives you the impression that the narrator is talking about surviving a trauma, about holding on to beauty in the midst of the ugliness around her. And retrofitting a hit ballad to make a statement about a pervasive social issue is a work of genius.
The Confessions Tour . Nothing beats the live experience , I was there for the shows in London and Japan by the catwalk and the disco ball stage. Simply BRILLIANT and Amazing...❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️
One of the most magnificent tours ever. Perfection from beginning to end. Her RE-Invention tour and Also Blond Ambition are up there as pinnacles of pop tours and the blue print for the rest .......
One thing about Madonna she knows how to make you think about human interest topics 🤔 a lot of people say she uses gimmicks which may be true but she does get your attention and yes she’s willing to go there- anywhere. Her look as always is beautiful . I especially love all the outfits in this segment. Your reaction is awesome ❤️
Listen to the original. How you aren't in tears after this performance is beyond me. It was BRILLIANT live. Saw it in LA opening night and Miami the first show.
Live To Tell and the Aids orphan count is in support of her charity, Raising Malawi. She adopted an entire African nation! She's built schools and a pediatric hospital named after her adopted daughter. She also adopted 4 orphans from Malawi into her own family and is raising them herself. She should be a saint for all that work and attentions brought to that nation.
The song was included on, and was written for the soundtrack to the movie "At Close Range". The movie is based on a true crime story centering on the murderous exploits of a man and the deadly legacy that his son had to deal with.
Live To Tell went to number 1 on the Billboard charts the first week of June, 1986 and was her second ballad to reach the top 5. The song was part of the movie soundtrack for the movie At Close Range that she starred in alongside her first husband (arguably her only true love) Sean Penn . The arrangement that you heard from her performance during Confessions is not the album version -but very close. The organ melody is a layer that was added to the live version. I love this song and is in my top 5 favorites of hers.
Live to tell is one of Madonna’s greatest hits. Live to tell was a no.1 hit on the billboard chart in 1986 and has been on Madonna’s greatest hits albums
Live to Tell is one of her well-known ballads. It was actually a song the record company did not believe she could pull off, in terms of making it successful at the time. She usually performs it. She also has Raising Malawi organization that builds schools etc in Africa to help the communities and especially children. Not to mention she has adopted several of her own. I think it goes perfectly with the theme of confessions. It's a cause she believes in and supports.
It WAS epic to see it live. Before going to to the concert we knew she would sing on that " disco ball cross" at one point, because it had caused quite a scandal at the time and it was all over the press and the tv news. So not only we knew she would do that but we couldn't wait to see it happen. And God, that was powerfull...
Glad that you react to the second segment of the show, which of course, has a deeper meaning than seeing Madonna hanging from a cross! As well as the magical performance of Forbidden Love! Representing the conflicts around the world, love matters when comes to religion, ethnics, race, etc.
This song was a huge hit in the 80’s. She sung it for her husband, Sean Penn’s movie and included it on the “True Blue” album. It got huge radio air play at the time, but there was no church organ in the original recording.
This is the most brilliant tour in music history..

It's up there only with the Girlie Show, two of the best
It was just gorgeous.. everything ran so smoothly.

This song was a huge hit in the 80’s. She sung it for her husband, Sean Penn’s movie and included it on the “True Blue” album. It got huge radio air play at the time, but there was no church organ in the original recording.
Amazing music & tour! Thanks for your review.
We LOVE it!
