  • Because native plants are slow to develop, a first year native planting often looks like a weedy mess.
Weed seeds from the seed bank germinate and attempt to choke out seedling native plants.
In this video, Colt Hamilton shows what a first year planting can look like under various situations.

Will need to wait and see if the other grasses and legumes will come up thru the heavy mulch blanket but I think they will as they can grow in soil that has a fungi presence where weeds want mostly bacteria dominance and nitrates. The compost layer down at soil surface has the nitrates in the manure converted to amino acids which will stimulate the grass seeds and not so much the weed seeds. I put this compost layer down first and then the urine soaked sawdust on top which keeps raw carbon from touching the soil so it does not rob it of nitrogen

This spring I have plans to work down a cover crop and then plant eastern gammagrass with corn planter. Wait a week or two and then broadcast a diverse mix of other grasses and legumes and then take chain harrow across to disturb any sprouting weed seeds and then cover entire field with compost and cattle urine soaked sawdust. My thought is this will make an organic ground cover to keep weed germination down as they will be shielded from the sun.

Also I think this mulch will preserve moisture this summer and hopefully give the gammagrass a better hold before the end of growing season. Most of the other grasses I am broadcasting are rhizome plants and so I plan to seed those only about 1/2 the recommended rate to conserve nutrients and moisture for the gamma in first year and beings the others are rhizomes they will continue to fill in following year as they love mulching which will be adding a fresh layer of raw carbon on top every fall just the way nature intended
