      Same here! I can't afford to simply throw it away and just get an additional skein. There are plenty of uses for yarn barf. I recently used my odds and ends to cover a small cardboard box that I now use as a snazzy individual project box for 6 skeins. I'm really pleased with how it turned out, too 🥰🧶

      @heather4518 Haha! I've only lost one argument with yarn barf I couldn't unpick, and the culprit still sits in my leftovers bag until it learns the error of its ways. It'll become stuffing for something rather than be thrown away, but it is SO tangled/knotted it's actually obnoxious 😵‍💫😆

    Sorry girl, did you had say you are THROWING AWAY the yarn barf ?! B-but WHY ?! It's not tangled at all, it's rolled, you just have to take a minute or two to unroll it then wrap it around the skein... My goodness, yarn is too expensive for throwing away half of the skein...

    Funny, I usually never pull yarn wound that way from the center. I have a little basket I sit it in so when I unwind it from the outside the skein doesn't roll all over the place. Pulling it from the center is a recipe for disaster. But it looks like great yarn. I love the colors!

    I’m fairly new to crochet and been an avid watcher of the channel and I literally gasped when the idea of throwing away the yarn barf.
    For oil shape skeins like many Al have said I would have just pulled from the outside. And if I was determined to use center strain I would just take out the tangle. Just throwing my money away, nah. And if I cut it off I would repurpose in some other way.

  • @CinSpain

      Pretty much all yarns start with yarn barf. It’s not a big deal. Even if you can afford to toss yarn, why would you? Crochet and knitting are both slow crafts, so I think we can take a few minutes to untangle some yarn.

    Hi from Canberra Australia. Sirdar (we pronounce it Sir as in "To Sir With Love" dar) has been a staple in Australia for at least 40 years if not longer. I am 70 and can't remember not having it around. It can get quite cold here (not as cold as in the US of course) but in Canberra it can get down to -10C in winter and I always knitted my girls jumpers with Sirdar as it held up to the rough use of kids and it was warm.

    What a great video - I love Yarn Snob reviews! I think the issue you experience with a lot of the "yarn barf" is that Sirdar is a UK Brand, and here we don't tend to pull our yarn from the centre.

    • @teatimecrochetdesign
      @teatimecrochetdesign 2 วันที่ผ่านมา +4

      I live in the states and I never pull the yarn from the center. I use the Wool Jeanie or I wrap it in a ball. I'm definitely like my distant relatives across the pond in this regard! :)

    • @BarefootCrochet
      @BarefootCrochet 2 วันที่ผ่านมา +5

      I’m in the states too and don’t pull skeins from the center. I was taught about a million years ago the I should wind it into a ball. That way you can deal with flaws up front and the outside of a ball of yarn stays cleaner than a skein which absolutely mattered when I was crocheting at 8 years old.

    • @vanessabrumage
      @vanessabrumage 2 วันที่ผ่านมา +1

      @@BarefootCrochet I use the 1lb of yarns from the center pull, but those are acrylic and I haven't had much of an issue. I was told to not worry about winding into a ball unless its a natural fiber yarn, in which case I'm usually buying those in a hank. Some brands in the states even had arrows showing which side of the skein to pull the center from, or put a little sticker on the center pull (Hobbii does this a fair bit with their different lines).

    • @teatimecrochetdesign
      @teatimecrochetdesign วันที่ผ่านมา +1

      @@vanessabrumage I think if it has a center pull marked, then I'd use it. Otherwise, I just wind it into a ball. Sure, it takes longer to start, but then I don't have to deal with untangling yarn barf or cutting a bunch off. But everyone has their preference and there isn't a right or wrong way. :)

  • @yarra352

    Like everyone else is saying; not every yarn is meant to be pulled from the center. And I don't think you can expect something from a yarn that was never meant to do and then deduct points from it for not doing it.
    Fuzzy, fluffy mohair yarns I'd never pull from the center, it a recipe for disaster. Same for 100% non-superwash wools, especially single ply yarn. It just puts the the strand through far too much yarn on yarn friction that can weaken the strand, cause tangles and knots or leave little felted bumps of build up excess fibers on the strand.
    And I don't understand the whole must pull from the center. If having to pull from the outside truely is the end of the world I'd say it's a you-problem not a yarn-problem. So buckle up and go rewind the skeins if you cannot handle having to pull from anywhere but the middle.
    Yes, I know, sharp, pointy words today from this Mama, but I still love you my girl.

    Hello, new fan to the channel here! As a very budget-conscious crafter, I'm really enjoying your yarn reviews and have one request/suggestion -- I would really love it if you would include the price per yardage! As with everything else in this economy, I feel like yarn companies have been shrinking their skeins and expecting us not to notice we're getting less product for the same (or even higher) price. I'm grateful that you include the weight/yardage along with the price, but can't do the math fast enough on my own to keep up with your videos. I also just find it helpful to have mental comparisons saved away, like if i know that X budget acrylic is ~$1.50 per hundred yards, and Y premium yarn is ~$12 per hundred yards, it just helps me mentally place new brands on the budget scale. Thanks for your consideration!

    • @JustWriter
      @JustWriter 10 ชั่วโมงที่ผ่านมา

      This would only work with yarns roughly the same weight or thickness. You need a lot more yardage for a piece, in a skinnier yarn, roughly the same size as one made in a thicker weight. Most ball bands say roughly how many stitches and rows make 4"x4". Compare one yarn with another that has about the same stitch count. Even then, price per ounce is usually what is to be compared, except when the yarns have different fiber content. Cotton won't weigh the same as acrylic or polyester.

    Sirdar has been big here in Ireland for a long long time I remember my mom using sirdar yearsss ago ( I’m nearing the big 4-0 in age ) we still have their patterns from when I was small - and don’t hold me to it but I think the cardi I wore for my confirmation was a sirdar pattern. It was gorgeouuuuss!
    I wouldn’t compare the jewel to winterglow from Hobbii though Toni - true you get a similar colourway but I made a cowl with winterglow over Christmas and the thickness of the yarn was inconsistent, it kinda got to me but I said it just must be the type yarn it is - some bits were thicker and some were like thread ! ( I lovvvveeee Hobbii - don’t get me wrong , I have their plan and buy many many gorgeous yarns from them ) but it’s only the colours that are comparable in that yarn , not the yarn itself ❤ x

    Sirdar is pronounced 'sir-dar' (not seer-dar), and it's based in Yorkshire. The reason you're getting so much yarn barf is because skeins wrapped that way are not really designed to be centre-pulled. I never try and centre-pull any yarn wound into a skein like that. Jewel Spun is indeed gorgeous, but it runs to £6.99++ here, and that's too expensive for my self-imposed price ceiling.

    I've had some Jewelspun sittin' around - time to get it out! I think a nice ripple shawl will do....

    The Sirdar Loveful looks amazing; I'd couple that with some scrap yarns to crochet a patchwork-style Rasta tam. And I'm loving the Jewelspun already!
    Lastly, a lil' yarn barf never hurt anybody 😂

    I remember buying sirdar yarn 50 years ago I mostly used it for baby things. I hate yarn barf. And if it gets to much , snip and throw I have started using all my skeins of yarn from the outside. Thanks for the video. Always informatine

    I often buy Hayfield Bonus. It holds up really well and washes well. I normally pay about £2.50 a ball.
    I have never heard it pronounced like that, though.😂

    I stopped trying to find center pulls on skeins a long time ago. I use my yarn butlers, which allows me to pull easily from the outside of the skein and really reduces my frustration over yarn barf.

    I'm working on making the squares in the box you're using. I'm on #17 and I'm not thrilled with it. First, the print is SO small! I have to take a picture of each and enlarge them. Second, I'm not an expert by any means, but I had to give up on three so far (just couldn't figure out the instructions) and most had to be improvised. I'm using the cards as a time filler while making my temperature blanket. But back to your video, that yarn looks great! I especially love the last one. Thanks for being you. Totally enjoy your videos. 😊

    Most brands you review arent available here in New Zealand, but everytime I go to my local brand store I am tempted to buy Jewelspun. After your review maybe I'll finally give into that temptation. The hexardigan is a great idea for how to use it!

    My husband and I refer to the "yarn barf" as "the whole butt" of the yarn. As in, "Oh man, I'm starting this new skein, and the whole butt came out." 😂
