Thanks for the video. My family is from Lubec just across the bay. I spent all my summers there as a kid. I had a 12' boat with a 10 horse evenrude outboard. The fishing used to be unbelievable in the 70's. We would handline a couple of thousand lbs. Of cod and pollack a day.
Thanks for commenting skip man, I’m glad you enjoyed it. Loading a small boat like that is always an interesting experience!!! Subscribe to see more videos as they come out.
It wasn't almost fished out 20 years ago. The government closed areas everywhere and didn't open them for years. So it appeared they were almost fished out. I was one of those fishermen out of Virginia for 8 1/2 years.
Thanks for the comment, I love these types of discussions. My statement comes from experience as a fish monger, when thru the 90’s I could only find 20/30 and smaller scallops in the market. Closures and active management have created the boom that we have now. I think one important takeaway is that management is always years, if not a decade, behind reality. Data collection (not a perfect science), data analytics, bureaucratic delays and action take a tremendous amount of time. See the flounder video for some discussion on this.
That day 80# in 3 hours work time. 10 min steam out, 3 tows, and 10 minute steam back. They made a nice profit for the day. Today scallops are the largest dollar value fishery in the USA and there is a lot of money being made. Hopefully the point we were trying to make was received, that active management works. Of course there’s always a lag between real time conditions and management, which is very frustrating. Profits will be better when there’s more product and more quota.
