  • So I just got these speakers for free from a friend who didn't want them anymore. And now I know why. These speakers are a scam! The speakers are from a Philips AS3 home cinema set.

    I sold this pieces of crap for 10 euro's. Holy, I thought I would not even get 2 cents.

    Philips speakers and other products changed a lot over time. Philips products from the Seventies are actually of very high quality and underrated by many who only know the bad cheap modern Philips products.
    Starting in about 1980, the management got more and more control about the product design, whereas before that it was product engineers who decided all about that. So the speakers got more plastic-y, had lower cost speaker materials, worse capacitors, foam instead of rubber and so on. By 1990 or so most of their speakers weren't really good any longer.
    However, Philips speakers from 1976-1978 like the MFB active series (RH532, RH541, RH544, RH567, RH587, RH545) that had very deep controlled bass equal to passive boxes of ~5 times the size, or the larger dual-8"-woofer passive series (RH427, RH438, RH447, RH457, AH467, AH487) that have a very natural, full and enjoyable sound, are excellent speakers even today and often in near-perfect condition.
    I myself own the RH544 MFB and the RH457. The 544 have bass response down to roughly 27 Hz with noticeable levels, even though they are small 8 liter boxes. The 457 are much larger, passive and go down to about 40 Hz with noticeable levels. These are my go-to speakers because they have a great, natural sound like the 544, yet draw less power when coupled with a modern class-D amplifier (2-15 Watt vs. constant 110 on a pair of 544). For loud listening of deep-bass-heavy songs, I use the 544 though.
    If you can find a pair of MFB speakers for 250€ or less or one of the mentioned passive speakers for 100€ or less, in perfectly functioning condition each, you get a sound quality that makes you really wonder how it is possible that these and the LSB 400 shown in your video were both made by the same company.

      Philips still makes good stuff. I've got a 6.5" right now and it's really nice expecially considering what I paid for it. Yes, the original box was pretty badly tuned but the driver itself is actually good. And they make some really nice 8" for home theaters and they also make 5" drivers for BMWs and those are also really nice. I've never seen a Philips driver go over 8" honestly.

      Are you familiar with the 22GL559 bookshelf speaker? It seems they are a single driver speaker. There are a pair being sold locally and they look great. Any thoughts?

    • @Kadano
      @Kadano 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@rig4365 Philips 70s single-driver units are known to have a pleasant, natural sound well-suited for vocals and string instruments. Their lower bass response will be poor, but for classical and singing music they should not disappoint.
      I personally wouldn't pay more than 20€ or so for them, since at 20€ you can already buy 22RH422 or 22RH452, sometimes even 22RH423 / 22RH453, which with their dual-drivers are more versatile for different types of music. But I've read that for strictly string instruments / vocals, some find single driver units preferable, so if your tastes go into this direction, I'd say it's worth to try them as long as they are below 50€ or so.

    I have a pair of those Sony's you have in the back there (among a dozen other speakers....), currently using them as front left and right in my home cinema. They came with a stereo I bought a long time ago but the stereo is long gone. Anyway what I'm trying to get to is those Sony's are pretty damn good for what they are and they go pretty damn loud too with a good amp. I wouldn't call them audiophile grade but definetely one of the better 2-way bookshelf speakers I've heard. You can find them secondhand quite cheap. I'll be replacing mine soon with something else but these are going in my garage/mancave :)

    Philips were always a naff name, cheap, plasticy, NASTY! However, I got a pair of speakers from my mate. They were part of a one piece stack system, which in itself wasn't bad. They have a 4 inch bass, a 4 inch mid range and a tweeter. The crossover between the two 4 inch speakers is perfect leaving the main bass to concentrate on clearer deep bass. I hooked them up to my 2,000 watt sunbuck amp and believe me, they sound exceptional, only 60w but you could have a good house party with them.

  • @pcno2832
    @pcno2832 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    It doesn't sound that bad for a cheap speaker (though it's hard to really tell with fake electronic music) and it probably sounded better when new. But what a gimmick! Even if there was originally a tweeter, it's obviously designed to make everything look more expensive than it is. I always assume the worst about speakers with translucent grilles anyway.

    Nice I don't think ! Years ago a friend asked me to look at his then new midi system, as it seemed one speaker had completely failed. The speakers looked as if they should be three way, but once opened, which was difficult as they were hot glued together, there was only one crappy little 4 inch speaker in them. Wasn't even long throw. The front panel of the speakers was made with two completely mock speakers, which even had silver dust caps, to fool the buyers into thinking that they'd got something good. I tried the midi system with some "real" three way jobs, and the sound was amazing. We burnt both the original speakers in the wood stove here LOL. The midi, and its adopted speakers, still sound good to this day ...Shouldn't think the LSB400 was a proper Philips. Just a crappy chinese affair, like most of their products now.

  • @uldisr
    @uldisr 6 ปีที่แล้ว

    Yes, it is true. I have Philips AK-251/20 speakers, which is a part of home audio system and this whole is a good looking fake! I think, that it is not real Philips, but it is a product from unknown manufacturer. These speakers are presented as ported 3-way system, but in reality they have 1 woofer and 1 tweeter, and a hole in the front of the box. Materials and woofers are cheap. Nevertheless, after some improvements (strenghening of front and back of wall, closing-up this stupid hole, filling of box with sintepon), the sound quality became pretty good. I use these speakers for my digital piano Yamaha P-32 and enjoy piano sound.

  • @awesomeferret
    @awesomeferret 8 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    It's significantly more likely that you goofed and don't know much about tweeters than the idea that there was no tweeter. I've seen other videos in which fools teardown two way speakers and think that the piezoelectric tweeter is a scammy thing that does nothing. In general, piezoelectric tweeters aren't ideal for hifi systems (especially not in that specific cheap circular form factor) but there certainly are some exceptions. Yes, these are bad speakers, but they lied about nothing. These are just cheap crappy speakers, and are not a scam.

      First off i am just going to say, ooooo roasted! Sorry, i'm not here for shit-talking. You say that they didn't lie? It says: 2-way speaker system. That means that there are two different speaker elements supporting two different frequenses. This is a one-way speaker, or a fullrange speaker. These type of speakers are designed for portable and compact enclosures. Of course, these boxes are neither compact nor portable, so they have most likely been modified or something considering the fact that the bassport is waaay too big for such a small speaker, aaand they look pretty old, something from the late 80's maybe? So they are PROBABLY bought used...

    Philips had matching hifi "components" as well, and the quality was just as bad. The front was a single piece of plastic, molded to look like separate components, and the back was made of thin masonite. They were in official stores back then, and they were real Philips products.

    I have a Philips AK-141 speaker set that are almost exactly the same as these. I originally thought it had a fake tweeter (because I could never hear it). However, after opening the box I found that it did contain a small piezo element that made sound. However it was ridiculously quiet (even on its own) and when hooked up with the main 4 inch driver it can't be heard at all, making it useless! Worst excuse for a 2-way system ever! I assume that the same cheap piezo element is used in this speaker box and you just can't hear it.

    First speaker I ever used in my life was a Philips AK-141, looks identical, fake tweeter and all, still have it, but I don't use it since yeah it sucks :P
