However, when it's heated up that hot any germs, fungi etc on the ball are killed and anything on the outside is turned to carbon(soot/ash) so it's basically burned off. Those being the case, it's not necessary to clean it, but for the sake of good science it's probably a good idea and I'd imagine he does.
