  • On October 8, 2022, the Boulder Philharmonic, led by Music Director Michael Butterman, explores the consequences of human greed and indulgence through musical allegory in their opening night performance titled "Hymn to the Earth". The program features the world premiere of "Ozymandias: To Sell a Planet" by American composer Drew Hemenger. This new work features a captivating collection of texts ranging from the famous sonnet by Percy Bysshe Shelley, speeches from Lakota Chief Sitting Bull and Shawnee Chief Tecumseh to climate activist Greta Thunberg’s fearless demands to global leaders, and grave statements from UN climate reports.
Climate change is the existential challenge of our time. The Boulder Phil has partnered with the City of Boulder’s Climate Initiatives Department to help share this message with hope for our future. Members of the city’s climate team, including Director Jonathan Koehn, will be on-hand Saturday, October 8, to share climate action ideas and resources, as well as collect submissions to the city’s climate audio collage project. Concert attendees will be invited to share their vision for a more climate-resilient Boulder.
The Boulder Philharmonic presents a panel discussion with Michael Butterman, Drew Hemenger and Jonathan Koehn to set the stage for what will be an inspiring and unforgettable evening of art and collaboration in our community.
