The Boulder Philharmonic's upcoming Masterworks concert, From the New World, spotlights the world premiere of Wind, Water, Sand by Stephen Lias, a composer celebrated for his works inspired by national parks. This piece draws from Lias’s experiences as composer-in-residence at parks including Colorado's Great Sand Dunes National Park. Lias's compositions often intertwine music and nature, reflecting landscapes and the emotional resonance of America's wild spaces.
Lias is no stranger to the Boulder Phil. The orchestra previously premiered his Gates of the Arctic in 2014 and All the Songs That Nature Sings in 2017, both pieces inspired by national parks and later performed at the Kennedy Center’s SHIFT Festival. These collaborations underscore the Phil's commitment to fostering new works that explore the intersection of music and the natural world.
This program also features violinist Tessa Lark performing Michael Torke’s Sky, a vibrant fusion of Americana and Appalachian fiddle traditions, and concludes with Dvořák’s Symphony No. 9 (From the New World), a masterful blend of European classicism and American influences. Together, these works promise an evening of musical storytelling and innovation.
