Apologies once again for the minor audio issue in the middle of this video. I think I got away with it - I’m sure you’ll let me know if you disagree! More importantly, I’d love to hear your views on where to go next with this Game Gear…
@@DistinctlyAverageRepairs The cover of my new movie PS1 game is realistic. Mobile phone projection, mini projector, Bluetooth controller. I was treated unfairly in Hong Kong and could only do these things. I couldn't buy equipment to learn electronics. You are already outstanding. I'll take a closer look and give my opinion
Suggestion: Start a 'Distinctly Average Repairs 2' channel showing the same repair videos but with ridiculous substituted audio effects throughout instead. Could end up bigger than the original channel... I'll subscribe & view 😄
😂 Love that idea! Dubbing an entire video in that way would be very time-consuming but now I’m wondering whether to just include a few ridiculous effects in each video? If this becomes the thing that takes the channel to the next level, I’ll owe you a🍺! Thanks for the suggestion. 👍
Great video, as always! I think you should change the screen for a new better one, and put a rechargeable li-ion battery pack...this console sucks up a lot of energy!
It’s flux - it cleans the metal surface and also helps the solder to flow. It comes in a few different forms but I like the gel stuff in a syringe because it’s easy to apply.
@DistinctlyAverageRepairs Well done, a new channel, and you are starting out the right way. You show amazing skills, patience of a saint, great humour plus you are VERY thorough with your case and pcb cleaning. Only one tip though. Try to replace electrolytic capacitors in these vintage stuff whenever possible. This stuff was made quite a few years ago, and manufactured on the cheap. Therefore, they didn't use the best quality capacitors. By now, these capacitors are probably well passed their sell by date 😯😯 Other than that, carry on, you're doing very well indeed. Thank you so much for the kind words and your subscription - I really appreciate it. Agree 100% on the capacitor comment - the Game Gear particularly is well known to use poor quality caps but yes, it’s probably worth changing these components on any old device. Will have a look at Patreon at some point - to be honest, the channel, whilst still new and small, has grown faster than I anticipated so I feel like I’m running to catch up! 😂 I have a huge list of ideas etc that I need to work through (not to mention boxes of eBay junk everywhere! 🤦🏻♂️). It’s a lot of fun though and I’m excited to see where things go. Again, thanks and good to have you along for the ride. 👍
@@DistinctlyAverageRepairs Many thanks for your reply. Me (Wayne) and Nina, my other half, are very much into retro repairs. To be honest, we run a small business. This sounds awfull, but we "dumpster dive". So much electrical and electronic gear just thrown away, when there is hardly anything wrong with it. One example, a £300 VAX BLADE rechargeable hand held vacuum cleaner. Dumped because it had a broken brush bar belt!? We repaired it, cleaned it, and sold it on for £170. @ninaevans4501 It’s shocking the amount of stuff that gets thrown away for the sake of a minor fault or a component worth pennies. I’ve always liked tinkering with stuff, right back to the Sinclair ZX days and it’s great to take something that was junk and bring it back to life. Thanks again for your support and I hope you enjoy whatever I come up with next! 😀👍

@ninaevans4501 I actually used to have a pretty successful little sideline selling Sinclairs etc when eBay first launched, waaaaay back in the 1990s. Thank you so much for the offer that’s most generous but I couldn’t possibly accept, please keep your collection intact, it will be worth a fortune some day! (Maybe!) 😀👍All the best…
Great suggestion - I think one of the main reasons the Game Boy outsold the Game Gear was the battery life. It might have had a colour screen but parents didn’t want to be replacing batteries every day!
Denzil Davis 12yr old: I love this gamegear since in many years ago. Unfortunately, this gamegear is waste of batteries. Because of the batteries run out and burst mains of batteries cause extremely hot. Like every 20mins batteries run dry and burn too much. I'll never play this anymore, I really sad about this gamegear... Wasn't plan upgraded the gamegear create some replace for new gamegear isn't??... China has manufactured an all-in-one game console that resembles a game gear case. But the visuals and operation buttons of the old game are unique

Ultimate editing skillz. Going pro, my man.
Thank you! 👍
I had thsi game as a kid and totally forgot about it untill now. Great fix, both for the game gear and for the loss of audio 😂
😂 Thank you - I don’t think anyone noticed! 🤫
@@DistinctlyAverageRepairs 🤐
Funny caps package, never seen ones like this before.
Good video, thanks
SMD capacitors - much tidier than the electrolytic ones and they won’t leak either 👍
@@DistinctlyAverageRepairs oh I talked about the original ones, those things in strange black boxes you removed at first
Ah I see, sorry I misunderstood. Yes, those are normal electrolytic capacitors but they are in a black plastic case which is the strange black box.
Great video, as always! I think you should change the screen for a new better one, and put a rechargeable li-ion battery pack...this console sucks up a lot of energy!
Thank you! Great suggestions - I think the console needs both and a few other bits too 👍 This could get expensive 😂
Some of the sound clips you remade remind me of the vacuum cleaner off of Telly Tubbies lol 😂🤣
Funny you should mention that specific vacuum cleaner - keep an eye on the channel on the 16th Dec 😜 I’ll say Noo-Noo more!
4:32 at this point you'll need a bigger soldering tip to give more heat to the desoldering wick
You’re right, I do need some extra tips 👍
9:14 What's the clear stuff you put on, and what purpose does it serve?
It’s flux - it cleans the metal surface and also helps the solder to flow. It comes in a few different forms but I like the gel stuff in a syringe because it’s easy to apply.
Ik laughing out loud when I heard a cabinet being dragged over the wooden floor when you are pushing that tiny cap 😂
I need to do some more of these 😂
@@DistinctlyAverageRepairs I think that’s a great idea!
Game Gear was my first console! I played the first level of that stupid Lion King game as nauseum.
I used to have a set of these. I should see if they still work...

you could use a screen upgrade kit, thanks for the vid 😀
I think this is the most important mod - the screen is awful! 😂 Thanks for watching.

Thank you. Yes, he was indeed and a great racing driver. This game would have been released at the height of Senna’s career I imagine.
