Ike & Tina Turner performing the songs I Wanna Take you Higher, Come Together and Proud Mary live at the Playboy After Dark show in 1969. One hot and steamin' performance it is ;)
This Is Insanity!!! Tina & The Girls literally were just Drop- Dead Gorgeous.... This Is Fabulousness On Another Universe!!! I Love How They Changed The Entire World With This Performance!!! Ike was Brilliant¡!!! This Band Was Just Everything!!! This is like getting hit with a Thunderbolt... I Never Want This Performance To End...The Most Perfect Performance and Coolest Audience To Witness Sheer Greatest!!! I watch it at least Once A Day, Motivation To Be and Stay Fabulous, Inspired, and Encourage, Yet Humble!!!!
This Was One of The Grooviest Thing, I Wish I Would Have Been In-Person To See... Amazing!!! They Just Rocked The House, and What A House ( Everyone Was Completely Engaged, and Looking Beautiful)!?!?!!!!They Rocked This Till They Couldn't!!! Tina, The Girls, and This Band Was Next Level Iconic!¡!!!
I always tell my sons and other Millenials that 1969 was the height of western civilization....... And the way women looked at that time is one example. Tina exemplifies that 1969 look of lean, healthy feminine energy. Shake it, honey!
Sean, Yeah, I was a in that scene, and it was awesome, especially the women, the lack of HIV & Chlamydia, the cars, the higher purchasing power of the average worker (adjusted for inflation), and the much lower unemployment. The only big problem was the Vietnam War, which was a lethal and expensive disaster.
Too bad during the height of civilization people of color were fighting for equal rights and the lead singer of this band was being beat within an inch of her life every night. What a great time to be alive.
@@brittanymiitchell8491 Brittany, By 1969, many folks of color lived better than you realize. I know----I worked with, studied with, and had many great times with folks of color in Los Angeles back in that day. That also included going to demonstrations with them, studying the best works of Black American writers (Malcom X, Cleaver, Ellison, and many more), and occasionally fighting White dudes who criticized me for socializing with soul brothers and sisters. ..... However, one thing that my friends would NOT WANT is your patronizing virtue-signaling. As for the physical abuse of Tina, you should talk to Ike about that---when you reach the next world......Don't lay your guilt-trip crap on me, sweetie!
Who was it great for? Specifically? Women like Tina? Black Panthers being murdered by police? Black folks in the south being lynched. I'm glad you had a great time. But the idea that this was the peak of society says a lot about what someone like you values.
I was a teenager in St. Louis the same time as Tina and well remember the rise of Ike and Tina at the Club Imperial and its empressario George Edick, for whom I babysat at one point. The whole Ike and Tina concept evolved steadily from hard work, discipline, creativity and brights. Tina was always a serious artist, focused and ambitious. She always dressed beautifully. Look closely and you'll she has basically the same face as today, a true classic beauty.
The Ike and Tina Turner Revue always gave a great performance. Tina was a dynamic performer and Ike was a talented musician. RIP Hugh Hefner and Ike Turner
it was the best--- the 50's were cool-- but!! the 60's-70's were so unique-- and real--- good pot back then--- some good LSD ((only or those who knew)) -- not crazze like today-... everything in moderations--- like Boonesfarm Apple Wine... mellow --and the talent--- flowed so gently but sharp..
Honestly, I can say we cannot hear music like this anymore. Awesome vocals, musicians on point and a fantastic performance and it's live; a time when you had to have real talent unlike the performers of today. Playboy After Dark (PAD) and the Midnight Special showcased real and live talent; and the PAD party atmosphere was great, just folks sitting back, drinkin', smokin' and having a good time. Too bad I was not old enough at that time to enjoy such a party. Great clip. Thanks for posting.
The sexiest thing on two legs. Hefner wasn't doing his job if after this performance he didn't ask Tina to pose in his magazine. Love how she belted out the Beatles line, "one thing I can tell you is you got to be free!" to a rich all-white audience. RIP, you gorgeous talented woman.
There's a high spirit and musicality in these pre-'70s performances that today's talent and technology can't replace/duplicate. Thanks so much for the post!
Same dress worn in the 80's / she has kept all original costumes in storage. Some were taken out of storage and delivered to the set of Whats Love Got To Do With It by Tina herself including this dress which did not fit Angela Bassett. Tina's torso is much longer than Angela's so therefore a replica was made at that time for that purpose only.
@klbuys...The Ikettes are Esther, Claudia and Pat Powdrill. I do think this is the earliest taped performance of Proud Mary. Ike and Tina put the song in their show that year after being inspired by The Checkmates version which also came out that year. Ironically, it was produced by Phil Spector.
It is an epic group that can combine energy, sex appeal and musicianship. Very few if any can match the in the 21st century. It is sorry how far down the food chain overall we have devolved musically.
Looks like Claudia Lennear in the Ikettes here. If it is, it was right after this when she joined up on Mad Dogs and Englishman tour with Joe Cocker and Leon Russell..
Itk Turner was GREAT. He did so many first! discovered Tina, and made her a super star. He may have been a bit rough, but musically he was up there as one of the GREATS! First Rock and Roll song Rocket 88, was IKE TURNER! He started a revolution.
I had to watch this performance again. It's just thrilling and makes you want to move. The music flows through Tina's body and her VOICE is emotion itself. Herein lies the difference between her singing "Proud Mary" and Beyonce's tribute to her @ Kennedy Center awards show. Tina IS the Proud Mary and li'l Beyonce just a paler robotic copy. Sad. But that's the way it is w/young musicians/performer today: all style, little to no substance. But that will ultimately change... giddy w/anticipation.

The high water mark of the era. it was never improved upon. the queen and her court show how it's done.
Ike Turner is one badass guitar player.

When I was a little girl I wanted to be Tina when I grew up. I am 43 now, and I still want to be Tina when I grow up. Woman gives me chills.
How lucky are we that this has been preserved on film for posterity. Very lucky indeed.

This version of Come Together is cool...I loved watch this. Hugs from Brazil
all of the covers of this song and Tina with her three supporting gals singing support, gave them all something to run for!
The most beautiful woman in the world. Shes an angel.
Their performance of "Come Together" on this clip is amazing. It's so close to their recorded version. I love when artists do that.

Tina can still move & perform now as she did then. Who can say that? There will NEVER be another Tina Turner!!

Dancer Byron Gilliam, he helped set up the dance scenes on the show. He also worked on Rowan and Martin's Laugh-In

Cool she has so much range as an artist. And I particularly love her later work with out the baggage Sorry IKE
yep she is alive and still rockin. She retired in 2009. She is a beautiful in her 70's or 80's.
if ike didn't do anything else right, he gave tina a the priceless gift of performance. which she still carries with her to this very day!

If played twice it WILL wake the dead!!!!!
Did anyone else notice this was an abbreviated rendition of "Proud Mary"?
