I dont spend $ in this game too but most of the items that are essential for leveling solo is sold in cash shop. I only manage to get them because i have been playing this game for way too long now
I've been playing for 2 months, i can say if you're a free player, it would be a long way to max your level and gear since everything is in the cash shop

Yes. It is changed. It now covers a large 11x11 aoe. It still consumes blue gemstones but my sacred crown negates the consumption of gemstones
