  • The case Amy Annis, et al., v. The State of Ames was argued on November 18, 2004, at the Ames Moot Court Competition. The presiding judges were Hon. Ruth Bader Ginsburg '56-'58, Associate Justice, U.S. Supreme Court; Hon. Richard Paez, U.S. Court of Appeals for The Ninth Circuit; Hon. Reena Raggi '76, U.S. Court of Appeals for The Second Circuit.
The Ames Competition, held in the historic Ames Courtroom of Harvard Law School, is one of the most prestigious competitions for appellate brief writing and advocacy in the country. The students participating in the Final Round started the competition in fall of their 2L year. Two teams progressed to the Final Round through their strong research abilities and excellent written and oral advocacy.

This seems to foreshadow what would later happen in real life.

The case was horribly argued by both parties in comparison with other Ames Debates.

Kind of nuts RBG mentions the new dean Elena Kagan, and 6 years later Kagan would be serving on SCOTUS with RBG

RBG is ruthless! Loved the 27:27 part.

59:28 is a perfect example of why words matter.

All of the students did poorly. The petition especially could have had a stronger footing and much stronger basis of argument!

Also, at 11:35 RBG sort of throws the other judge under the bus. The other judge is asking council something that RBG knows has nothing to do with his argument. Very funny...

1st Guy-the best one out of very bad finalists. 2nd guy-not sure he even knows what he's talking about. 3rd guy-Painfully bad to watch (especially the hand theater) considering he makes no real arguments and just asserts a confidence wholly unsupported by talent or expertise. 4th guy-embarrassed himself but wasn't as painfully bad as 2 and 3.

14:50 did she really say that the Bible (because it's such an old text) should serve as the basis for laws that the government implements or refuses to implement?...hmm

Always refrain from waving hands. Keep them out of sight. Very distracting.
