  • The case Peter Rogers, William French Smith v. James Mendez was argued on November 22, 1982 at the Ames Moot Court Competition. The presiding judges were Hon. Sandra Day O’Connor, Associate Justice, U.S. Supreme Court; Hon. Ruth Bader Ginsburg '56-'58, U.S. Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia Circuit; Hon. John J. Gibbons '50, U.S. Court of Appeals for The Third Circuit.
The Ames Competition, held in the historic Ames Courtroom of Harvard Law School, is one of the most prestigious competitions for appellate brief writing and advocacy in the country. The students participating in the Final Round started the competition in fall of their 2L year. Two teams progressed to the Final Round through their strong research abilities and excellent written and oral advocacy.

And then US Circuit Judge Bader Ginsburg had no idea she would be elevated to Associate Justice! While I disagree with her on a lot, by God she is sharp as a tack, a survivor! What an honor even to just have these videos! Thank you so much! - Nate Opgenorth

Sandra Day O’Connor in 1981 and Ruth Bader Ginsburg in 1993. The first and second woman of the U.S. Supreme Court. In 2022, there are now 4 sitting, 1 deceased and 1 retired, total of 6 women.

It's funny how so many Ames judges either became Supreme Court Justices or were connected to those who joined SCOTUS. Here, we have RBG and O'Connor and we know they would later become colleagues. But Judge John Gibbons, on the panel here, retired from the Third Circuit in 1990 and his seat was filled by....Samuel Alito, who would later replace O'Connor.

The 2015 Ames Moot Court had retired Justice John Paul Stevens and District Court Judge Alison Nathan presiding (who was his former Law Clerk). President Joe Biden elevated Judge Nathan to the 2nd Circuit Court of Appeals in 2022. She is one court level down from SCOTUS.
