  • The repair of this SONY TC-K415 Cassette deck took ages. Cleaning and removing the remains of the perished drive belts, that gunk gets everywhere. In the process, I discovered that the drive cog on top of the FF/REW motor had split so that had to be replaced. After fitting the replacements I discovered the Pinch Roller had gone very hard and was causing a flutter in the sound, so that too needed replacement.
    All in all a long and mucky job, requiring the use of gloves and plenty of kitchen paper not to mention isopropyl alcohol. However, the end result from this 1980s classic cassette deck was great, not perfect as the heads were worn but certinly good enough to play those old favourite tapes from years gone by.

    That was an interesting watch. I used to get them all back together for the 3k test and forget about the pinch roller. Now as a matter of course when replacing belts I do the pinch roller at the same time.

      Agreed. Great tip. Pinchies (as I affectionately call them) are often overlooked😊

    Hi, i have a sony tc-k411 deck and it seems they are almost identical. I did all you show us and now works perfectly! Even the small guide went off on mine.

    This was a very educational video! I enjoyed watching you repair this Sony Tape Deck! Now I don't know why but I have owned a few Sony's before that were double decks and I always find the speeds too fast I don't know if Sony does this because they are using bad test equipment but I have always adjusted them to the correct speed! Usually use a pre recorded tape and then play the same CD album together and I listen to the speed until I have the tape phased with the CD! I do this using headphones and I listen to them both at the same time and you can dial the right speed in until both match! That is how I have done most tape players!

      Glad you found the video enjoyable and educational, that was both of my aims. That way of correcting the speed is very good, well done. I use a test tone tape as that enables me to hear any "flutter" in the speed, caused by bad belts, mechanical issues or as in this case, the bad pinch roller.

    welcome back mr chas, interesting video and interesting machine! I watched the entire video! if I can afford a very small suggestion, it could be interesting to insert a small background music at a very low volume for the silent parts of the video

      Hi Paolo, thanks for the comments. I see your point re the background music but I don’t like it when others do that so I won’t be doing that, It would be confusing so have short snaps of music. Background music has its place but not in a repair video, in my opinion of course.

    The transport has 3 little plastic rows that you wrap the belts over. Next you screw the two pieces together then slide off the belt off and into place.

      Sorry, is there a question here?

      @@ChasLarge I was watching and was just letting (anyone) know that you don't have to fish the belt around the reels with it half open. You can loop the belt around the three closest pegs, then screw the 2 motherboards together, then finally unhook from the pegs to slide the belts into position. No question, just a statement. Thank you for your informative video. I was just adding information.

    Not sure if you cover this later in the video as im only ten mins in at the moment. My TC-K415 fades away treble from around 1 second after press play. First second sounds lovely then fades. I suspect belts as i dont think they have been changed and it struggles a bit on fast forward.
    Also my deck never registers chrome tapes, just indicates type I. Any ideas for that? I have ordered new belts so will fit along to this video when they arrive. Thank you for the upload

      Fading audio is usually down to capacitors failing. I would clean the lever switches that contact the back edge of the cassette, they sometimes become tarnished. They can also be bent slightly out of position, compare them to each other for the same physical position.

    Hi, thank you for thsi detailed description. I changed the transportation belts and cleaned everything. Now it seems to work but the cassette winches, when you insert it and press play. If you press fast-forward and forward the casette for just a few seconds and then press play, it works perfectly. Do you have any advice to get rid of this problem? Maybe a mistake when we did the assembly after having changed the belts? Thank you in advance.

    • @ChasLarge
      @ChasLarge  ปีที่แล้ว

      Don't understand "winches" what do you mean by this?

    • @heikotrefzger
      @heikotrefzger ปีที่แล้ว

      @@ChasLarge Thnak you for the reply. Maybe I used the wrong wording. I meant with that: "Now it seems to work but the cassette winches" that the cassette does nor run in continiuous speed, the cassette lees when playing. Do you understand?

    • @ChasLarge
      @ChasLarge  ปีที่แล้ว

      @@heikotrefzger I think I understand. The tape does not run at a consistent speed. I would check the lubrication of the capstan, it may have dried, causing the capstan to slow. Also, make sure the replacement belts you fitted are not too tight, if there is no light slack when the belt is pressed, it may cause the bearings on the capstan to bind. Check the pinch roller is smooth, clean with isopropanol, also the tape heads.

    • @heikotrefzger
      @heikotrefzger ปีที่แล้ว

      @@ChasLarge Thank you. I cleaned it with ethyl alcohol. Is that okay, too? The lubrication is still there and seems to be okay. I used an original belt set for this type of tape. As the tape runs on continious speed when fast forwearding it just for some seconds before playing it seems to me as if the tape needs to be tighten first. That is why I am asking if you can do anything wrong with the assembly.

      Max I send you a video showing the problem exactly?
