Here is a good example of a win-win solution. Jack has just turned 12, and is in 7th grade. One day, a teacher catches him picking on Brandan, an almost 7-year-old first grader for not using his manners. The teacher who caught Jack, takes him aside and says, "hey, Jack, I can tell that you are very passionate about manners, and that might have been something you picked up at a very early age. But instead of picking on Brandan like that, have you tried working with him on understanding manners, and the importance of using them?" If the teacher had simply talked to Jack about how his behavior might be making Brandan feel, that might've felt like a win-win solution to Brandan, but not to Jack. Instead, the teacher understood that Jack just wanted Brandan to use better manners, but Brandan just wanted Jack not to pick on him, and she came up with a solution that seemed like it would work for both of the boys.
