These would be perfect for adult coloring books! Arrtx Alp Markers: Let's compare all the sets!

  • It occurred to me after recording this that these markers would be ideal for adult colors since the bullet tip it very small and the ink flows slower than other brands I've tried.
    Please read the review below for more info and resources I mentioned in the video!
    Arrtx had outdone themselves releasing a new line of alcohol-based markers this year under the name Alp. You can see the variety of markers they have here: amzn.to/3ii6Wpl some of the newer colors sets are not showing up on their store page so check here for the other sets: amzn.to/2DL5OeC
    The Arrtx Alp markers have a slimmer rounded triangular barrel made of white matte plastic with color chips on each end. The arrtx name is printed on black on the marker and both end caps are labeled with a color number. You can see the color name and number on a hand color swatch that comes in the box. The box is designed to be permanent storage/display. The 90 color set has a plastic grid in the bottom of the box to keep the markers in the order you like while the other boxes have a cardboard grid that can bend if you are not careful. The 80 color set and skin tone set also had a metal clasp on the front but they have replaced that closer with a magnet of the other sets, an improvement I think as the clasp would get int eh way when setting the box up for display. The markers have a fine bullet tip and a standard chisel tip. The bullet tip is smaller and harder than the other markers I have used. I find the ink flow to be a bit slower in the Alp marker, that is not good or bad, just an observation. I also find many of the pastel-colored markers have color chops that are much darker so be sure to make a swatch.
    Ibeleivethat there are 200 unique colors in the line of Arrtx Alp Markers. You can get all of the colors if you buy the 80a, 90b and 36 skin tone sets. If you bought those sets the only duplicated you would get would be black and clear blenders. This would also include the 4 fluorescent colors, not in the color family sets. The prices range from about 60 cents a marker in the larger assorted backs to about 96 cents a marker in the color family packs so it is more affordable buying the big sets if you like them as all of the colors in the color family sets are in the 2 big sets. If you are unsure I would recommend starting with the skin tone set as none of those colors are duplicated in any other sets and then you can decide if you wanted to pick up the smaller sets as your budget allows or save up for the big sets.
    These markers are more expensive per marker than the original Arrtx markers or similar grade markers that run on the same color numbering system with the exception of Concept or ShinHan Touch. Here is a color chart of the Shinhan touch markers. I recommend printing one out to color by hand if you get these: www.otakufuel....
    *You may notice many maker lines use these inks, the color names and names match but you may find little discrepancies between brands. The alp markers appear lighter and I wonder if it might be the harder nibs restricting flow so the ink appears lighter. I had no issues blending these markers.
    You can refills for the markers here: www.jacksonsar... and it is less expensive than copic.
    ***The skin tone set appears to run on Copic comparable colors if you go by the name of the color they are a perfect match for Copics of the same name.

    It’s nice you mentioned the caps are easier to take off. My 84 year old mother was almost in tears trying to do her coloring last week because the Caliart caps are getting more and more difficult to take off. I’m about to order her the 100 Crayola Supetips in hope that children’s markers are easier to de-cap!

    I think the fact that these are lighter and more pastel sets them apart from the other brands. I know with the ohuhus people were upset that there werent many washed out colours. So even though i have the full 200 set of the ohuhus i think i may still pick these up. This video is super helpful i was going to get the 80 set and all the colour family sets but now i know i just need the 80 and 90 set and possibly the skin set.

      I saw Lindsay’s swatching a couple years ago, and, when I started swatching stamping inks, I began using a yin/yang symbol. The thing gives me a good idea as to how the ink would work for both a solid image and a line-drawn image. As an added bonus, I, too, punched a peep hole in the solid inking (where there’s a “dot” on each half).

    Even within the first five minutes of this video I found it 100% helpful! Thank you so very much for taking the time to do this research for us so we all can save money! I often go back and forth between my art mediums and I was looking at expanding my current Blick Studio marker selection. Arrtx, Ohuhu and many other 'affordable' marker brands are very popular on TH-cam and art Instagram right now and I really wondered just how much they differed. This is a big help in deciding which affordable brand to go with as well as knowing just what color selection I will be getting amongst all the different sets. I can't thank you enough for narrowing down this search for me and many others!

    I was able to get the Arttx Grays to use and review. I'm only getting into art late in life. So I swatched out the grays and each swatch I made, I ended up with three layers using the chisel tip. The first layer was the whole length, then I would use the chisel tip again over 2/3 over the first line. Then I would use the the chisel tip over the last third. As I increased the swipes over the previous ones, the colors got darker. When I was all done I was a bit stunned at the colors I had swatched were all in the gray family, yet I was seeing blues, purples and green! Then I looked at the picture on the swatch card and on the box and to my surprise, it looked to me like both pictures were made using just those colors in the box. I also found that with the very lightest colors I didn't seem to feel like they had enough ink in them to make the color come out fully if at all. I really do like this set of markers, Now to learn how to use the the best!

    Holy swatches Batman!
    Cool info on the usable colors in other brands. Very smart of them I think. That's part of why I never started with markers- you can't refill with this or that brand, you can't match up with a different brand if you run out of one marker, color dups, they don't sell separate markers, and so on. It was also smart packaging with the different color groups, it's quite attractive. I don't have markers except for some Sharpies (still learning with paints and inks) but I find the color boxes very pretty and kind of want them all lol. But, there again, you point out to get the eighty and ninety set if you're a person who wants all the colors.
    Good video, thanks!

      After seeing so many people seem to struggle to get skin colors with gouache it seems like the skin colors might be useful for that. What I don't like about alcohol markers is they bleed through the paper, now I hear they aren't light-fast. Now I wonder why they are so popular. I think I'd rather have something that won't bleed through the paper because sometimes I'd like to add a little color to a planner.
      And coloring books are frequently double sided paper so they would only be good if the book was one sided pages. I just got a set of colored sharpies the other day and realized my error as soon as I doodled with them the first time. bleed through, blah.

      @@recoveringsoul755I use markers for stamped images. You can also buy marker paper - it allows a smooth application. Bristol Smooth paper can handle a variety of mediums, as well. But mostly I just stamp, color and cut the images and then glue to the cardbase or I use another piece of cardstock to stamp and color on, then glue that piece to my card base - no one sees any bleed thru. Coloring books printed on both sides do best with colored pencils and gel pens and maybe fine liners for the smaller images. It's all a matter of trial and error such as you experienced with bleed thru sharpies! If I buy a coloring book, I try to buy a book with images printed only on one side of the page and either take the page out or place a sheet of thinner chipboard in between the pages and bleed thru to the next page is not a problem. Watercolors can be mixed to achieve a variety of skin tones rather than buying a convenience color (in a skin tone) and gouache is simply opaque watercolor. Some people on youtube are misinformed and making false statements about gouache, such as "it's acrylic paint", because apparently Arteza sent out tons of gouache samples to a variety of youtubers that do not understand it and did not care enough to research gouache. I even heard a rather popular youtuber tell people not to use their "good brushes" with gouache. It's watercolor and cleans up with water! Be careful where you get your advice from. Lindsay knows all about different mediums and about different types of paper so she's the one you can trust/rely on for correct info and she researches the products. I wish I had found her years ago when I started buying - I wasted my hard earned money on many products that were thrown in the "it's crap pile" and now I cannot buy much of anything ... so asking questions and gathering correct information is important.

    • @recoveringsoul755
      @recoveringsoul755 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@cassiescreations9828 I agree Lindsay is great. I don't make many cards these days and my stamps are somewhere else right now. I decided last fall finally that I wanted to try watercolor. And I can do a very light wash without bleed through, little bits of color even on regular paper. Plus a small amount of watercolor takes up less space, can mix about any color you want and very little disposable parts.
      I grew up watching Bob Ross and it took awhile before I found people today doing actual art, just kept running into digital art and Manga. I just wanted to start cheap. Finally found YT's art community and going from there. I watched a lot before buying anything.

Keep up with the watercolor! I began by being intrigued with the beautiful way the colors mixed on the paper, even the lack of control intrigued me but what really got me were the beautiful "happy accidents" and I totally understood what Bob Ross meant. You watch Mind of Watercolor, as well, don't you? If not, do watch him and Maria Raczynska, both are so inspiring! Take care!

      The more I think about it I think these may have been influenced by the adult coloring book market. The hard bullet tip keeps the ink flowing slow so you can color tight spaces. I think if you go slower you will get a deeper shafe but this way you can keep it light or layer up.

    Lindsay, please tell me if this is b.s. … I heard somewhere that if you’re trying to determine if two values in a drawing are the same or different, you can overlay the drawing with a RED transparency to make the determination. Sadly I don’t recall if the “trick” was just for black & white, or also for colored drawings, nor where I heard it.

    • @thefrugalcrafter
      @thefrugalcrafter  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      That usually works unless the colors are red or green as green will look overly dark and red light with this method but it helps. Squinting can also help determine values.

    Seeing how the colour numbers and family groups are the same accross multiple of the affordable markers, would it be safe to assume they all come from the same manafacturer? Almost like the cosmetics industry, with how they approach formulators/factories.

      They have recently revamped their inks and should have them a on the crafters companion website but if you want an old refill try blick, amazon or some of the marker skips online like carpediem, markerpop, okatafuel etc. My spelling might be off so double check you have a marker store lol!

  • @selbarton
    @selbarton 4 ปีที่แล้ว

    These look nice. I do love seeing the swatches. The ones on their site seem to be far more vibrant which feels a little off on their part. And calling that one set purple tones with only 6 markers that seem to be purple while the majority are pink is kind of disappointing considering I love purples and dislike pink for the most part. It's more of a part 2 for the passionate colors set. I love the blues.
    Do they have much of a smell to them? The smell the old sharpies had used to make my throat hurt almost immediately and that reaction has gotten more severe over the years.
    If I got these I would have to get the bigger sets though or I'd run into never having what I needed to do a full image. I've noticed with the Spectrum Noir Aquablend sets that I have (floral and marine) that I lack a lot of colors I would use to get what I really want to layer and end up not getting to use them as much as I would like. So it's made me a little leery of the building with smaller sets (as I watch the 24 color primary set cost almost double the rest).

    • @thefrugalcrafter
      @thefrugalcrafter  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Ok, I just sniffed a Sharpie and an alp and the sharpies are much stronger. I would have thought they would be the same. I am not bothered by marker smells (except chartpak) so I hasten to say that they wont bother you but I cant smell them unless I am trying.

    I see that the Arteza skin tone and gray tone markers have slightly larger sets than the Arrtx, which of the two sets do you recommend?

    • @thefrugalcrafter
      @thefrugalcrafter  4 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      I'd definatly recommend the arrtix gray set over arteza because it uses customary grey names and color codes which makes it easier to chose colors, it's on a 0-9 scale of warm and cool and blue and green grey. The arteza has unique names for each color so it's harder/slower to pick the right color. For skin thos I'd say arteza because the markers feel juicier and the bullet tip is fatter and softer so I think it would blend better and there is a more diverse range of color.

    Do they bleed through the paper? I find that most felt tips and markers do, and inexpensive colouring pencils are always very washed out in colouring books. There seems to be something about the paper that makes them so (and you can't really justify buying artist quality pencils for colouring in colouring books.) Have used gel pens instead, but though they are OK with not bleeding through and being vibrant, they run out fairly quickly.

  • @bennu547

    If they have more warmer brown tones in the yellow set that you could use for skin tones, maybe that’s why you don’t see very much in the official skin tone set. Cause those colors exist in a different set. I’m just speculating and maybe I’m wrong. But if colors exist in a different set that you can use for skin tones, you may not need them in a skin tone set. I don’t remember what set you said came first but if there’s no duplicates, why would they include colors you use for skin tones in the skin tone set that already exist in another?
