The Little Prince begins with an account of how the pilot drew a picture when he was a child. His picture - he called it Drawing N°1 - shows an elephant swallowed by a boa constrictor - perfectly logical to him- but to adults it was just a drawing of a hat and they roundly mocked him.
When his plane crash-lands in the desert and the little prince appears at his side, asking him to draw a sheep and then declaring himself unsatisfied with the results, the pilot brings out his Drawing N°1. “No, no, no!” says the little prince, “ And this, the pilot tells us, is how he finally found someone who understood his drawing, and how he made the acquaintance of the little prince.

My father gave me a copy when I was about 8 years old. I am now 67, and it is only now that I understand the message the author was trying to convey. A very simple message, but it took the loss of my wife to congestive heart failure in 2013, to open me up to understanding it on a gut level: Life is ephemeral. The time that you share with your loved ones is the only thing of true value. In your last moment, your memories of the love you shared will be all you will take with you.

I did something similar with Alice Walker’s The Temple of my Familiar. On a flight to Austin TX I sat next to a lady that asked me what I was reading. It was my second time reading it. Once was not enough. But I couldn’t explain the layers of this novel, although I tried. She was intrigued, I was almost done reading. I hurried up and finished it and gave it to her. I was happy to do it. I hope that book gave her a feeling that all good books do. Which is to say I hope she was transported into that world, much like The Little Prince.

Perfect. My daughter painted a scene with the little boy and the Fox with words that said the line in the book about being responsible for the rose. It’s an incomplete painting as she was quite good with art but her hands wouldn’t let her finish it to a final polish. It’s on a roughly made but new bird house. It’s my treasure as she died at 33. She knew she was going to die and left me with lovely memories of her inner beauty. I wouldn’t sell that bird house for a million. It was her story. A life lived as best one could. Thank you, your video was perfect.

I’ve only known about this back in college and it has been a favorite since. The dialogues and lines in the English version a friend gifted me is just so beautiful and melodramatic that i fell in love immediately.
I noticed how i have different interpretations of the book based on my mood and my current life events. When i was in the midst of a severe depression that lasted over 12y, and i was desperate for companionship and salvation, i saw the entire book as something akin to Jesus coming to Earth to save the people and him leaving the Earth to return to his planet.
Love those little lines that just gives goosebumps, beside most that have been mentioned already, one of my fave is, “ahead of him nobody goes very far”. That line resonated with me during the time i was depressed. I never leave the house for over a decade, i was so afraid my world is literally as big as the little prince’s.
I’m happy you ended the review with the line that made me fall in love with the book. When i reread it, I always look forward to that line and savor it well. I let it linger, let it echo in my head before i proceed. I remember getting funny feelings when i read that line.
Also, wow, did not know he died young at 44, what a coincidence. I’ve never saw someone associate that with the 44 sunsets. It’s a rather beautiful coincidence. Never knew he died from a plane crash too.

I cannot help but wonder if Hayao Miyazaki's latest movie "The Boy and the Heron" (Or, How Do You Live, if using the direct Japanese translation) was not somewhat inspired by this story. They are very different of course, but there is something smilar in the tale of a young boy coming to terms with the truth of the heart through cosmic events and archetypes. I may be reading too much into it, but at least I think that Miyazaki and de Saint-Exupéry would have found a lot to talk about, with their shared love of flying, and shared aversion to fascism. He died too soon. Or maybe, he joined the Prince on his planet.

I first read this book when I was 24 and cried so hard. One of those books that is hard to imagine someone writing and people living before the story because it seems like it must’ve always existed.

It’s one of my favorite books ever! Thank you so much for sharing this with us! I had never seen a movie segment of Mr.Saint-Exupery until today…on my birthday!🎉❤😊A wonderful gift 💝 It’s my belief there are no coincidences…

My introduction to The Little Prince was through someone who was at a weekend house party with me. She and I were the first ones up on the Sunday morning, and she was reading TLP, preparing a lesson for students. She tried to tell me about the book, but she spoke no English, and my high school French was pretty basic. But I understood enough that I went out and got the book, in English, and have loved it ever since. My French is still pretty basic, but I'll never forget "renard", which means fox.❤

I've never watched an adaptation of the book, but it does feel really strange to always show the pilot. Why not simulate his point of view with camera movement? Seems like that would be more true to the book

Elementary school teacher in France here. Every time I've had fifth graders over my career (five times), we've always studied Le Petit Prince. That book has something special, something really universal about it. It's the only unanimous piece of art I've been able to find for the kids. Even the toughest ones, when we were reading those pages outloud, they shut it and joined us in humanity as they let their sensible side exist at last.
Nowadays I'm not in class anymore, as I train young teachers. I'm honest with them when I say I probably have no easy answers for their problems in class, but I do know one thing for sure after all these years : they should study Le Petit Prince in class, as it is one of the rare things that bring us all together as human beings.

Unexpectedly I cried. It is so true, this book. What Saint Exupery lamented. But even then there is hope because we still see things through our heart. We still invest in others and we are content to know our loved ones. And most importantly, I am content to know God, his mercy and his infinite love toward us.

One of the most important gifts I gave my children is reading the Little Prince to them when they were four years old. It is a riot to play the part of the fox, and the drunk.
Then read it with them again when they were eight. They meditate deeply into happiness and sadness. Even death and loss.
And I will ask them to read it again when they are twenty.
My lesson, and my gift, is that the book is the same, but THEY have changed. They see their emotions change and grow as they unlock the misteries of the book.

Please, allow me to disagree with your introductory comment.
Imho the best known quotation from the book is the one you kept for the end.
" On ne voit bien qu'avec le cœur. L'essentiel est invisible aux yeux". And this is, imo, the quintessence of this adorable story, which should have been stressed more.
And it is, as I personnaly feel, the best advice against further visualisation in films or cartoons. The examples you showed, prove that the poetry of the text can't be enhanced by cinematographic means. It should be left to the reader to visualize the progress of the story with his heart and fantasy....
In my personal experience (and I grew up with the story reading it in my French lessons at school) the most convincing interpretation of was a lecture by the famous German actor Will Quadflieg. Already of advanced age and nearly blind, he had nothing but his table on the stage of Salzburg's Mozarteum hall and his voice.....
It was a performance that deeply touched my heart.
Fortunately it is preserved on CD by Deutsche Grammophone. It's been a highly cherished memento of both the author and the actor.
