- In this week's episode, join me as I spend a few days camped out right on the river in the new rig. I also go fly fishing for the first time in quite a while which was a great time! Peaceful vibes all around - oh, and it might've also been someone's birthday :D

What my dad taught me long ago, before magnetic drill bits were prevalent was to use a candle to make the bit stay in place. Light the candle, let it burn a bit then dip the end off the drillbit that goes in to the drill in wax. Just enough so that it will stay. Voila, it works.

11:29. Jonathan - right here you need to "mend" your line. You want to have the fly float at the same speed as the river flow. The slight tightening of the line is making the fly slower than the flow. The trout will see the fly as odd or off and reject it. As far as your choice to find a stream with no one fishing I totally support. These smaller streams hold fish just as well as the Deschutes. Fly fishing has its own type of "pop culture" with people that want to fish the Deschutes, the Madison or the Green. All are beautiful rivers with lots of fish, but also with lots of folks fishing. Choosing a smaller stream means no less fish, fun or beauty - you are just far from the crowds. Happy Birthday Cowboy.

One of the keys to fly fishing isn't so much using the flys you find fun, but figuring out what the fish are keyed in on. It's a good idea to be prepared to use nymphs, or dries, or even streamers, in a variety of sizes and patterns, to try to mimic what is happening on the river. Try picking up a rock in the river and see what living on the underside. Match the insects to what you have in your fly box the best you can. With water that clear and low, maybe try to throw some small streamers, like a wolly bugger, or a leach, if you aren't into nymphing. But believe me, there is a reason that nymphing is so successful :) Also-- there is a rhythm to casting. Try watching some of the Mad River Outfitters videos. Brian is an AMAZING teacher, and he really breaks down the proper why to cast. Good luck out there, and tight lines!
he looks like hes casting fine in my uneducated opinion. I mean from the perspective of a fish all that matters is that the fly lands somewhere it sees. Right?

I know just how good that birthday dinner is, because I've made variations on it many times. Yum!
Work on a connector from your power station to you rear cab of your truck to protect the power unit from the elements. The cord can be routed thru the rear cab vent between the cab and the bed. Then make it long enough to connect to your shore power socket. That when you have solar panels connected to theat power station for unit charging. You may also charge the unit every time you drive the rig. That 12 volt plug can connect to a switch power port from the truck connection. Good luck with the fly fishing. I have tried fly fishing all over and still need improvement never caught a fish large enough to eat. venture on

Jonathan, for mosquito bites try Aloe Gel which is usually sold at Target or Walmart in a large plastic bottle. I transfer a small amount into a small plastic container to bring with when camping. This was a great video and Happy Birthday !!

The scenery in the video today was amazing. You are so fortunate to live close to places like that. I am sure you received a lot of fly fishing tips, but here is one more. It is a good idea to walk upstream as far as you can and fish downstream. As you walk upstream you are scaring all the fish. If you spook any going downstream, you will run into them later on. I am happy that you got a good camper.

We've had three BMW Nat'l motorcycle rallies in and around there, Great places. No red meat, kills kidneys and colon. Bend, Redmond(2) Salem maybe a couple more. All good. Redmond is great. Good vid, nice to be out and on the water. Better watch those tree limbs, big rig now.

I'll tell ya, I was never much of a salad eater...and I used to only put iceberg lettuce in! lol I had no idea how to eat an enjoyable salad. Now? I eat them all the time! One of the main reasons is because once I started it did actually make a difference in how I felt AND...let's just say...I haven't had ONE COLD in over 10 years! I think part of the reason is I buy SEVERAL different greens...usually green/red lettuce, cilantro (yes, cilantro), scallions, chard, mustard greens, spinach and arugula and usually 3 different kales...I cut them all up, put them in bags w/paper towels and have them for the week (I won't be able to fully do this once I start traveling in my van tho) and then I put croutons, bacon bits, sometimes hard elderberries if I have them, chia seeds, a little bit of shredded cheese and my dressing. Often I also add a chopped up mix of carrots, radishes and garlic (chopped in a chopper) and man...I make some of the best tasting salads out there! haha! Been eating them for over 10yrs now...not tired of them yet, usually eat them once a day 5-7 days a week.
