  • The Crew: The Quest for Planet Nine is a game that seems to be finding a spot on everyone’s shelf, but is it popular because it’s really THAT great has it simply fallen into a positive feedback loop where its popularity is driven by its own popularity? I love finding and recommending lesser-known board (and card) games, so in this video, I’ll share the top 5 card games and board games that are similar to the Crew and perhaps even BETTER.

While I really like the other games you mentioned, they are in different categories than the crew. I can understand people not liking it if they don't care for the trick taking mechanic. But if you pull this out with card players, its always a hit. Its a short, variable, thinky puzzle that you can always improve upon. I haven't played a hand yet where we lost because of "bad luck". Even our really bad hands can be carefully navigated if people know what to communicate and how to interpret clues well.

I hope I didn’t make it sound like Crew isn’t a good game. Yes, having to work within limited communication to complete a mission when you are dealt an especially tough hand is much more satisfying than when you are dealt an easy hand.

Very nice list. You're a bold man for offering alternatives to The Crew. It's such a well loved game.

Thanks for the great list. I like The Crew for its co-op feature. Co-op games are fun to play with a group of veterans and newbies like myself. With that said, Hanabi is another co-op, limited communication game!

Ooh! Good recommendation! Didn’t think of that one!

Just finished this and my mum loved it. She is currently living with us and does NOT play games and now we need to find something to replace it, lol.

Did you know there is a sequel, Mission Deep Sea?
I don’t know another cooperative game that is comparable to The Crew and has a campaign of several challenges, but I think Paint the Roses is an excellent game that requires players to be clever to communicate what they are holding. Take a look at it.

I haven’t played this one yet, or even cryptid, but games with card tricks are really hard for me to get into or do well in

I know what you mean. I think if there's anything to complain about concerning The Crew, that would be if you don't like card games or especially trick-taking games. But Cryptid is all deduction, no cards!

The crew really does suffer from the high level of luck. It’s unfortunate. I really want to like it more but it’s continually frustrating and almost every hand feels like a Hail Mary in the harder missions. The Mind is a bit overrated but I at least feel like a group improves the more they play it. With the changing challenges in the crew it feels like the group never really improves. Just hoping things work out.

I love Cryptid so much but I have had an issue with clue mistakes and it just sucks the life out of the game. Not the game’s fault though.

Nope. I don’t know about Cryptid, but I’m sure that game is a lot longer than one round of the Crew. Fox and the Forest doesn’t have missions that change.

I think Fox in the Forest works as a 2 player game. The Crew's complexity drops while playing with the AI, JARVIS in a 2 player game. Whereas FitF is purely 2 player and does the job of trick taking for a 2 player game. It is just great. I actually prefer the FitF to the Duet version. The competition makes it worth it in my opinion. Really strategic at some level :-D

This is a hipster channel with hipster click baits for sure 😂 though the videos are super helpful to find something similar to something i like (or hate). It pointed me to Tang Garden, which I really like!

In my humble opinion, The Mind is extremely overrated :-)

Could be, but it’s a great value for the money.

@@theperfectboardgame oh yeah. You can also sort of play No Thanks with that, where's the remaining cards double as tokens. But yeah, in my opinion, I would not recommend to anyone. I'd rather they pick up something else.

Its weird how you rated luck an 8 and strategy an 8. Luck and strategy are normally opposing forces in a game. Cant be both. Some rounds may have more luck than others but you are missing the point of your own ratings.

    • @theperfectboardgame

Yeah. I’ve recently updated my criteria. It is now a gradient with Luck on one end and Skill on the other. I would put The Crew right in the middle. There’s a ton of luck, but skilled players can work around it. There are some situations that cannot be won, simply because of bad luck.

This just sounds like you suck at trick taking games. Very rarely and only in maybe 6 of the missions max (unless im forgetting any) is it possible to be dealt a hand you can't win. The standard rules of the game, win x cards, are all 100% watertight possible. You not knowing how to do something, doesn't make it impossible or luck based.
