I also have the 1720, but with only 1.5ghz cpu. Thinking of trying to improve the HW after wiping it and creating a linux/vista dual boot. Curious what you used for ram here, and how it ended up for you? Any regrets? Also, why did you choose to keep hdd? I heard that ssd can be the best improvement for speed on these machines. Thanks!

note - you can install 6 gig of memory in the 1720. the bios is a bit funky so it wont go to 8. but a 4 and a 2 will work. the system will down clock the cpu if you are not running the 90 watt PSU. [I'm using mine as a linux box and steam remote play..]

@@chz. make sure its the correct charger. model DA90PS1-00 P/N MM5445. Otherwise it will throttle the cpu down.

also so you know, with the bios 250g hdd limit the easiest way to jump to an ssd and when i say easiest i mean it might be the only way now that ms is no longer validating vista, i bought one of the hdd docking stations that has cloning capability but the catch with them is the destination drive has to be bigger then the source but with the bios limitation if you are running a 250g now and clone to a 320 it won't run in the 1720 so they ssd's in 256g which the 1720 bios can see so i cloned my 250 into the 256 and avoided the whole ms validation hassle. the FIDECO dual bay hdd docking station is only around $40 on amazon and 256g ssd's are around $50 and the cool thing about cloning that way is you use a computer, you put the drives in the correct docking station bays and hit the clone button and walk away for an hour or so. another thing you might consider is adding a 2nd hdd to use for caching, it'as always faster to cache on another drive then the one that has the OS...hope this helps

Could you tell me what model of charger you use for the laptop, I'm looking for one but I don't know if the models I see are compatible due to how old the laptop is

Hey man! I have a Dell Inspiron 1720 but the one with Intel Graphics (true sheet). So i found another Dell 1720 that comes with a Geforce 8400m but has a problem with the left hinge. Do you think that its posible to swap motherboards? Mine is stock with 1.8 Ghz processor.. i live in Argentina and i cant find the T9300, the only one i can buy is the T8300 good enough? Can you tell me what kind of game do you run in that machine? Im going to upgrade to play my GOG library. The intel graphics cant even start opengl. Thanks!

why is your graphics score so low, what video does your 1720 have? the graphics score for my 1720 is way higher, mine has geforce 8600M which was pretty much the default video for the 1720

Not every Inspiron comes with Geforce graphics. Mines is a Intel one... very crapy onboard card. That why im trying to swap motherboard with another Inspiron. Can you tell me what kind of games you can run with that 8400m? Thanks!

got same system.. but just 3 GB Ram. 512 GB SSD, 1 TB HDD, cre2extremeX9100@3,2 GHZ WinXP/W11 Dualboot. I search for a 4 GB Ram-Stick so i can upgrade to 6 GB Ram. (Maxed out than)

just so you have a reference my 1720 score: proc 5.1, ram 5.1, graph windows aero 4.7, gam graph 5.9 hard drive 6.5; processor core2duo t7300, 4g ram, geforce 8600m, opps 256g ssd not 512 (brain fart), windows 7 ultimate 32 bit and my aero is shut off which helps score and speed, your 3.5 graphics score something is not right especially with both scores being the same.....

did upgrading to windows 7 slow you down or improve your overall usability/performance

    • @pethelprc4721
      @pethelprc4721 3 ปีที่แล้ว

@@MoOutdoorsandReviews actually I do not know for sure, i bought it used with ultimate already loaded which i don't know how they did it since i can't find any w7 drivers for the 1720 but if you are still running vista then i would think it would be faster since vista was kind of a pig. i know that once in a while i run into some weird errors that i have concluded are because its running w7 like right now i just tried running the view performance and system info page and it says it cant do it and w7 cant detect the processor and installed ram which is really weird. the biggest boost you could make to the 1720 is to run a 64 bit operating system then you could utilize more the 4g memory, the 32bit 4 gig limit is what hurts performance the most but why is your graphics score so low, do you have all the desktop enhancements shut off? that should help some.....

@@MoOutdoorsandReviews check your power supply. You can have 60 watts or 90 watts power supply. I think that is a game changer. You can upgrade but if the power supply cant deliver its full 90 watts your performance can be locked. I have 60 watts supply and the performance is horrible. I dont know why mine uses a 60 watts... i bought it used back in the day.

How to repair your laptop with a hammer drill!
an SSD wont improve your score but it will speed up the 1720 some, but you might start having an intermittent problem occasionally where for seemingly no reason the hdd will disappear from the system and even bios, the only way to get it back is to R&R the hdd again and it will run fin again until next time. in typical dell style they really screwed the pooch with the bios by limiting the hdd size to 250g and never made a bios update to change it which i still find totally amazing, the 1720 wasn't an entry level laptop so why they would set a 250g hdd limit on one of the more expensive laptops where every other component is upgradable is beyond me, upgrade your cpu: yes, upgrade your memory: yes, upgrade system cashe:
yes upgrade graphics: yes, add multiple networking protocols: yes, add a larger then 250g hard drive: Umm...NO .......typical Micheal Dell BS...... Dell's ad slogan "DUDE...You're getting phucked by Dell"....can u tell i'm a dell fan...not.

Check your power supply man! i never had an issue with my hdd's. If you have Bios revision A09 you can put 1 or 2 terabytes harddisks. I tested it myself. One SSD 480 gb in one bay and a 1 TB disk in the other bay.
