  • This example problem is part of Module 8 in my Prestressed Concrete Design course on the flexural strength of prestressed concrete members. This example goes through how to calculate the nominal moment for a T-beam using the ACI 318-19 approach for calculating the stress in the prestressing strands at ultimate strength (fps). The rectangular stress block approximation is used for concrete stresses. The strain in the prestressing is found and compared to the tension-controlled limit to determine the appropriate phi factor. The example includes details on what to do if the compression block is in the top flange and when it extends into the web of the member.
