- Cygnets jump into the lake at the University of York. This is the largest plastic-bottomed lake in Europe.
Lakes are a body of water, naturally occuring, or man-made. Here at York this lake not only provides a great home for wildlife, but also acts as a drainage basin.

Fun fact:
The term “black swan” used to be used in the past in England the same way we would use the phrase “when pigs fly”. Before the colonization of Australia, where black swans are native, it was believed that all swans were white and the existence of a black swan was ridiculous and could never occur in nature. You can imagine the shock of British naturalists and biologists when they discovered black swans were very much a real thing.
That's actually interesting to learn, didn't know that.

There is always hesitant ones. No one left behind. I saw a video, the baby ran along the side of the river, as the rest floated down. Momma kept going over to check on him, though, and encouraging him. He got in...on his own time. 😁
Swans are the most wholesome creatures
They’re cute as babies and beautiful when fully grown, but…they can be aggressive towards humans, and really mean to other waterfowl. They’ve been known to attack and kill other cygnets, and goslings and ducklings, if the swan thinks they’re infringing on their turf. All waterfowl do this, it’s just that swans are the biggest are therefore best at it.
