The "Master of Puppets" album turns 38 years old in a couple of months. It was out for a year or two before I heard it for the first time, but it was absolutely amazing back then and it still is now.
I will say this: You're not completely wrong about metal, some of it is "the same kind of high-energy, fast paced music where there's not a lot of variation". Some metal has quite a bit of variation, and some metal isn't even fast-paced or high energy at all. Some metal is just loud soulless empty crap, some of it is highly technical artistic brilliance. Metal can be dark and serious, or it can be ridiculous and silly. There's metal out there with saxophones and metal with Middle Eastern instruments and time signatures. Exploring metal over the years has been an adventure, good luck with yours!

The song is about drug addiction but for the most part written from the viewpoint of the drugs themselves. When a person becomes addicted to something, that thing becomes their master. There are hints in the song to this where the drug is saying, "I am your source of self-destruction", "I will help you die, I will run through you, now I rule you too", "chop your breakfast on a mirror" (cocaine), and many more. And when you go back and listen to it the music and the change ups are designed to follow the pattern of drug addiction. At the beginning it is hard and fast while the person craves the drug, then the person takes the drug and the music gets soft and smooth to represent the high. (They did a pretty good job of this since you mentioned you felt like you were floating during that part.). Then you hear the music slowly begin to ramp up to represent the high wearing off. And finally you are back to the beginning where the person once again is craving the drug. This song is a masterpiece on so many levels!!!

This song is a warning for drugs, funny thing is in 1983 Metallica kicked out Dave Mustaine from the band due to problems with alcohol and drugs and in 1986 Metallica released this song
Both the lyrics and instruments tell a story, the "Master of puppets" is drugs, the instrumentals are in 3 different stages throughout the song and it has a meaning to the song
The first part is the beginning of addiction where u get addicted to the drug, u get crawling whenever the "master" is calling, the second part is the sweet instrumentals where u just get lost in the drug, the drugs becomes ur life and time just drifts past while u get more stuck in it, the third part is the desperation when u realize u are truly addicted and realize how u have thrown away ur life because of the love for the drugs and don't feel like there is a way back to ur life
All through the song the master tells u to call its name because it will hear u scream, it will answer with false promises
Btw, it took Dave Mustaine about 20 years to get free from the drugs after he left Metallica, Kudos to him

When it comes to thrash itself, nobody does it better than Slayer. They were thrash from beginning to end of their career. Metallica started off thrash but changed as time went on whereas Slayer were thrash 100% all the time.
