    Hi, I just got an offer from st Johns, thank you so much for this video it's so useful. I wanted to ask though is it normal for there to be a fridge in the room? Like for most unis it isn't but I have type 1 diabetes and so need a fridge to store my insulin. Thanks!

    • @RAmjad
      @RAmjad  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Hi, congratulations on your offer! So first-years usually live in 3 places: Cripps Court (which is modern), Chapel Court and North Court. The last 2 have a kitchen (with a fridge of course) and toilet shared between two people with a larger room and smaller room which is kinda like what you see here except there is a landing so you don't have to walk to the smaller room through the larger room. As for Cripps Court, the kitchen is shared between 8 people usually (2 hobs, 2 fridges, etc so plenty of space) but there is usually enough room for you to have a mini-fridge in your room (you may even be able to ask the maintenance team it and it up for you).
      But don't worry about it, in around late August / early September you will receive an email from the accommodation department asking you to select your preference for rooms and there will be an option for you to enter any special considerations based on any faith or health-related issues. You may even be placed in a different court entirely which has a room with a fridge. There are quite a few ensuites with a small kitchen around college too reserved for those cases.
      If you want more detailed information, you can email the accommodation office at St. John's now using accommodation@joh.cam.ac.uk and explain your situation and I'm sure they will be able to accommodate. I hope that helps!

      Thank you so much for your reply! That's such a relief, particularly the bit about not having to walk through one bedroom to get to the other because I won't lie that was really stressing me out- I have an extreme phobia of vomit and the thought of someone I don't know needing to get to the loo to puke and having to drunkenly stumble through my room is an absolute nightmare...thank you so much for your reply I really appreciate it :)

      Awesome, that's great to hear! I don't have a publicly available list but I mainly read books on philosophy, productivity, and theology. Nowadays, I'm reading a few short 15 - 20-minute summaries from Blinkist but on my Kindle so I can decide which books to read in full over the Christmas holidays as it's quite difficult to read a book cover-to-cover during term time.

    Hey RAmjad , is it possible for someone with average intelligence to pursue dentistry (academically intense course requiring AAA) , if I work hard and smart or not really (be brutally honest with your reply) ? I don't know if I have the ability , should I just try my hardest and if I fail pursue another path? Or is it a realistic possibility despite having average intelligence (if I work hard) ?

    • @RAmjad
      @RAmjad  4 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      Hi, I am being honest in saying that you should NOT define yourself by saying you have "average intelligence" because it's a sure fire way to hold yourself back from many things in life. I thought to myself countless times before, "maybe I'm just too stupid to understand X or solve Y problem" but that's rarely the case. You just need to research to find a better explanation of X because not every explanation makes sense to everyone or you need to have more experiences in solving Y types of problems - even if the first few times require some hints.
      So yes, you can easily achieve those grades if you work hard and smart. I cover a lot of techniques in many of my videos which should help you use your time most efficiently. But, remember that with many things in life, it is better to try and fail than to not try at all because, more often than not, you will surprise yourself with what you can achieve.
      If you want to read more about this way of thinking, search "fixed mindset vs growth mindset". I hope that helps!

      Hey, if you mean decision maths as part of Further Maths then it should also be on the GitHub link I have in my other video titled "Sharing my A-level Notes & Flashcards". It should be part of the Further Maths deck but bare in mind that it is for AQA Further Maths - I'm not sure how different other examboards are. And don't worry about me repeating myself, I'm always happy to help 😁

    the thing about renovations is that, in time, they can make a place worse than it was to begin with. I suspect the original room was far nicer?

    Is starting university at 21 too late ?

    • @RAmjad
      @RAmjad  4 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      Nope, I don't think so! I think that in many cases, as you grow older, no one is really concerned how many years it took you to reach the position you did. I hear that this is especially true in the case of medicine. Many medics, after becoming junior doctors, try to become a consultant in the least number of years possible becase, I've heard, being a consultant is really good. But, you won't think a consultant who got there are 33 is any better than one who got there at 36. Arguably, the latter could be better in some cases as they took years out to do other things and thus have a wider range of experiences. Ultimately, as you grow up, you realise very few people care about how long it took you to get the degree you did or whatever position you then hold and those who do care clearly don't have anything better to care about. I hope that offers you an interesting perspective

    • @RAmjad

      It really depends on which college you go to. Some have quite modern accommodation, others are quite old. Some have mostly off-site accommoodation and others have mostly on-site and others a mix of both. St. John's College (the college I go to) is 500 years old and the building I live in is ~200 years old. About ~1/4 of the rooms in the building I am in have undergone a major rennovation in the last 40 years but unfortunately mine hasn't. But the rennovation mainly means a new kitchen and new bathroom (removal of the bath and installation of a shower) which isn't an issue to me. The layout stays the same but you still have to share with one other person which isn't an issue because you usually know someone well-enough after first-year to be able to share with them. Or, as a second-year in my college, you can avoid picking a room in this building all-together and go to some of the rooms in the first-year accommodation block which is more "modern" (built ~60 years ago) but there are few spaces for second years in that block.
      TL;DR many Cambridge colleges are pretty old so the rooms are pretty strange but most people don't mind
