I own the backpack. Happy with it coming from much heavier Osprey backpacks, but it also has a few head-scratchers.
1.) Tossed the trash bag immediately. The irony of the trash bag being literal trash should not be lost on Big Agnes.
2.) Hip belt buckle design is prone to coming undone. As it slips down it will hit my pants belt buckle (low profile Arcade belt) and unclip. Typically it would pop off when taking big steps up rocks. I was able to remedy by moving my pants belt buckle off-center. Never had this issue with any of my other backpacks.
3.) Wish the mid-section had some fine-tuning adjustment, I think it would help with the slippage.
4.) Top and bottom gear straps would have been awesome. I had to make my own with shock cord and carabiners.
5.) Wish the elastic side pouches had shock cord tensioners around the rim to keep stuff secure when they aren't fully stuffed.
6.) I ordered spare buckle hardware from Big Agnes because I didn't trust the design of the buckles and I've had failures before on the trail. From emailing support to receiving the hardware took a month.
All the above being said, I got it for $50 less than the initial MSRP and it was a huge help in my journey moving to lighter and lighter carries so I can enjoy my backpacking trips more.

@@MyLifeOutdoors I have the 60 litre which comes in at 870g. There's a 45 litre that's 830g. Honestly the 60 is practically weightless in your hands.
You do "lose" out on features. It doesn't have dedicated walking pole mounts for example, but you can just stuff them down the side in a picket and under the webbing.
I say "lose", because I don't use them - it's a dump pouch, I don't need loads of straps and gadgets. I do miss a hip belt pocket though.

So what would you recommend for a good pack of this approximate capacity? Obviously more on the lightweight/ UL side. I've looked at Gossamer gear, big Agnes, and various others and it's quite overwhelming to find one.

If you can wait for delivery I recommend Waymark packs. But they have a 12 week lead time. Second to Waymark I like Hyperlight Mountain Gear. But they are not the cheapest. I really like the vest harness on the Six Moon Designs and they are very affordable. Does that help?

Ahhhhhh! Were to begin....i desperately want big agnes to win and they just keep swinging and missing. If you were backpacking 10 years ago the copper spur was the absolute bomb. In hindsight it may go down as the best freestanding nylon tent design ever. Everyone else played off of what they built. And exactly to your point they are somewhere between hyperlight mountain gear and Gregory...absurdity expensive and feature heavy with the weight to back it up. The front pocket is an exact copy of Gregory and osprey where they insist on putting a nylon patch for nothing but style on the pocket killing its stretchiness. All anyone wants is a big stretchy pocket. Im nauseated by the extra opening....if you have a stretchy pocket u don't need access to your bag at all until you find your spot. Im never in my pack. Days food and all rain / shade /bug/ water options are on the outside. Tent is on top of the closed trashbag (its waterproof). I say all this knowing im only half right...i just came down from kearsarge pass (sierras) monday...it was pretty cool in that the pass is the most accessible pass ...great for resupply and newbys alike. So there were two types only. Jmters and weekend warriors (not unlike myself). Only about 20% looked like me. The rest were more than willing to carry a 5 lb pack stuffed to the bone with all the crap in the world hanging off...absolutely miserable red faced sweating grinding...never a smile. Probably 80%...the marketers just win and those poor souls pay.
All that BS aside..."your killing me smalls"...i dare you to force me to watch another commercial!
I think you may be a genius or just insane. TH-cam is just like boxing....neither can go on forever..they cant keep punching and you'll never be able to produce endless content. That said, in your time you're like Tommy Hearns...just punch punch punch until you kill it. Great work!

    • @dcl97
      @dcl97 2 ปีที่แล้ว

When we did the JMT we did the Mountaineers route up Whitney, and finished with some rock climbing in Yosemite. The ability to flay the pack open and get quick access to crampons, ropes, harnesses is a big plus to me. I did the AT with a lightweight pack and it was a fine choice, but I was also slamming 30+ miles a day. We averaged only about 15 on the JMT, and at that kind of pace a couple pounds extra would hardly make a difference to anyone. The real benefit of a lightweight pack is that you simply can't load it with that much gear, and ultimately it's more about the load in the bag than the bag itself.

@@dcl97 of course...different types of hikes. It sounds like that big opening would be nice for climbing gear. I confess that I just love to obsess about getting the "perfect" kit (whatever that means) together. But it is for pretty much the same trip - sierras btwn 4 and 7 days. You have to be ready for everything weather wise, but for me it doesn't include climbing gear or fishing gear...I'm working my way up to that

    So my two cents here.
I work at an outdoor retailer, which will remain nameless and we have had the prospecter in stock for a bit. While i liked the bags i never found them that awesome.
After getting the ditchrider, impassable, and Parkview I'll day those 3 are AWESOME packs.
The impassable is perfect as a single day/hiking/biking/gp bag
The ditchrider is just right to be a minimalist travel bag/heavy do everything bag.
And the Parkview is probably going to be one of the top sellers in terms of quality to price alone!
The prospecter does have its advantages, and id love of they did a ditchrider with the zippered top of the impassable(with the back opening still) but big Agnes missed an opportunity by sending out the mid size bag first while i can see a niche for it (light family camping, large check travel bag, or ultralight into bag, for those new or not ready to commit).
In the end i think they'll be awesome long term but you can see this is the first public attempt... There will be changes.

I can't wrap my head around bags that weigh much more than a pound. Why? Why are people still carrying these heavy ass packs? I'm not an obsessive ultralight person, I have zero DCF in my kit. My Granite Gear Virga 2 weighs 19 oz, cost me $105 on Amazon, and is 54L so I just don't get it.

    • @Swansniff2
      @Swansniff2 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

Well, it comes down to durability and the weight you are able to comfortably carry. I have a 75L bag weighing 3,5kg. I once carried 35kg (LOTS of camera gear) for 8 days. My own weight was 57kg then. It has a wood framing and is the most stable and comfortable bag I have used. Also, not everyone is a ultralighter trying to hike 30+ miles a day. Some take out their family carrying big or mulitple tents and lots of extra comfort like lots of good food and extra clothing. The whole mindset of UL hasn't really caught up the in the rest of the world except US. Here in Sweden you can't really buy good light and compact gear in the stores. It is slowly coming but everything is very expensive. For a first timer I would most likely recommend a traditional heavier bag because UL-hiking can get very uncomfortable and even dangeruous if you don't know what you are doing. But I agree, once you make the transition to UL it is hard to look back :)

Big Angus is always innovative with camping gear. Someone put a lot of thought into making the Prospector 50. Moosejaw , One of my favorite places , great products and at a savings.
You asked ...." Ultralight or Traditional? Big Agnes Can't Decide"
If a person had 10 pounds or less as a base weight it would be an UL pack.
Between 10 and 20 pounds a Lightweight pack.
Anything over 20 pounds would be a Traditional pack. So the pack actually covers three different weight categories. That could be confusing as to which weight category.
That waterproof zipper and pocket on the front is identical to the one on my Waymark mile and the original , the Chicken Tramper pack.

So I just got the pack, loaded it up, and it doesn't fit right. I got the right size pack, but the adjustments and the way the straps sit on my chest make this a no go. But it's a lot of odd choices that make you scratch your head. It's like it was designed by committee. It's an awkward pack to use. I agree that there are a lot of head scratching choices made with this pack. So back it goes.

If you use a compactor bag or other large pack liner then obviously you can remove individual items you want. Makes me wonder if that contributed to the confusing end product. Approach, climbing, hiking, EDC, travel. Stir it all together.

I must the one of the few that likes the Trashcan. Hiking/backpacking with my kids it gives a good place to put messy diapers oddly enough. Of the few videos I’ve seen on this pack, it seems the big miss is the hip belt sizing.

Clean trash sure. But dirty trash is going in a ziplock anyway.
Yeah the hip belt needs more sizing options. Thanks as always

Wwhhoooo!!!! Damn!!! Another amazing thorough, insightful and damn thoughtful video from you!!! I love it!!!
Hahaha and I love how you are cussing BA out by saying "this stupid little trash bags..." lmao!! Had me laughing with enjoyment! 😂😂😅😅
Damn can you get any better??
Love the thorough, thought provoking and really impartial dissecting of this bag!!
It is so awesome that BA have finally made a bag!! The more I am hearing and watching stuff about BA, the more I am respecting them as a company!!! And this bad is not a bad looking bag,
Ermm.... a bit male exclusive bag, what about us ladies who also live to hike? Is there a colour design for us??
Over all not a bad bag!!!

There is a women’s version called the Garnet. The colors are different, although not sure if they match the demographic.

MooseJaw should give MyLifeOutdoors viewers a One-Time 25% off discount, and an all the time 10% off discount. Then I'd probably go there instead of their competition. But frankly right now, they seem to be just like the rest of their competition.
