Hey! Here it is! Happy 4th everybody! I just came home from a BBQ party with my parents and nephew and see this! Outstanding! I hope everybody has had a good time today. Anyway, that FSR you have there is *very* new. Impressive. They were selling cases of those recently on several places and I picked one up myself. The case I got is date coded 4011, so January 11, 2024. I have a bunch of older ones from 2019-2021 and the bag is different. Yours is sideways! Mine is tall and thin like a regular MRE bag, but bigger and clear plastic with the same label on it. That must be a new design. Also, I had no idea there were modular supplemental expansion bags for these! That is mad cool! Soldiers are often issued several of these during a major operation, before logistics is set up to resupply. They would take all the first few days of food with them. No telling how long before supply lines are set up. So, the reason there is only one coffee included is because *everything* in the meal is designed to be eaten on the go, right out of the package, and with no utensils and no heating required. You could even slurp down that chicken right out of the bag. Although many items are still better warm, and while sitting down on a tray! The coffee is NOT supposed to be a soldier's primary source of caffeine with these rations. That is what the caffeine gum is for! Easy to eat, pleasant to chew and made for on the go! Instead of having to stop and pour water in a container to make coffee, a soldier would just pop another piece of gum. Water would be in short supply, so drink mixes are not desirable except for electrolyte replenishment drinks. Besides, cold coffee is not ideal! I think the gum was my favorite component. It was really good gum actually! The pack I had was arctic mint. Normally I am not a fan of mint gum but the stuff in the FSR was fantastic. I find there is a TON of food included in these FSRs and it makes more than 3 whole meals, for me anyway. I must say that energy gel is the strangest component I think has ever been included in US MREs. I find that the food in these rations is basically as you described. Fine. Decent. Okay. But not great and a bit strange. I think the novelty of the components is what makes these fun and cool for me. Definitely good call saving the jalapeno cheese spread for the beef wraps. The strange sensation you got from those wraps I would describe as "waxy". It is some kind of shelf stable fat they use in those. I think a lot of these components suffer from being eaten room temperature and think that a few FRHs should be included with these. Maybe include some kind of thermal bag that you can use to carry an activated FRH in your pocket without getting burned. Buy yeah, these things aren't great. I just think they are really cool. They are also a lot cheaper than say, a Russian 24 hour MRE box, which has way better food and components in it, but is WAY more expensive! Anyway, thank you Jerms for another fantastic review! Very cool friend. Happy 4th! These meals are good for what they were designed for. I've only had one of these, and that was quite A few Yrs. ago. I never cared for the texture of energy gel, but it serves its purpose. I will have to try some of the newer Bills Brew. Like yourself, as A rule, I have not been impressed, LOL. Chicken looks awesome. Sorry it was chewy. I love Tabasco. Nice job on slicing the bread. I wouldn't have the patience, LOL. Sorry you didn't like the wrap too much. From 1981 (first MRE) to 1990 *ALL* MREs were cold, no FRH. And the FRH wasn't in all MREs until 1993. That's where the acronym MRE comes from, you could eat all the food items right out of the pack.
Great review! First Strike are always a mixed bag. Occasionally, you get a stand-out item, but most items are just full of sugar and not much else. They fill a hole when you're hungry.
If the "fruit" drink isn't that good, you can coat the cranberries with the powder, apparently it tastes great; a balance of sweet and tart flavour. Maybe use half the drink powder.
Thanks for the review. One thing I want to try is taking the cranberries and combining them with the drink mix powder (without water). They coat the cranberries and turn them into something like Sour Patch Kids.
I don't like super sweet BQ sauce either. First Strike is a cool ration. No need for a ROCK or something here either. :) Looking forward to seeing the ROCK again sometime. :) Still don't understand why you don't have more subs. The algorithm doesn't like you for some reason??

For the coffee your lucky you get one but they give the energy gum to makeup the caffeine add to that the applesauce with caffeine your probably fine
