Where's The Boost? This 1991 Dodge Daytona Shelby Turbo Needs Help (Diagnosis, Tuning Tech And More)

- I teased this Daytona in a previous video, and more than a few people in the comments were excited to see it. This front wheel drive whip from the early 90s just might be the ultimate K-car derivative. It's got a relatively fancy jet fighter interior, sporty lines and accouterment, and a turbo 2.5 under the hood. It bares Carroll Shelby's name on the doors, and carries other special equipment to match. Unfortunately, it also has 187k miles on the clock, and from the general look of the car, those miles weren't kind to it. It also happens to be completely gutless, occasionally cuts out for unknown reasons, and displays a really neat party trick every time you shift into reverse...
yes!!!!! Please keep the 80s and 90s Mopars coming! I am confident that many of your subscribers are in our age bracket and now remember these cars fondly from our childhood. Keep up the great work, Jamie!
Judging from the response they always get, you’re right!
@@DeadDodgeGarage Please keep the turbo dodges coming, as one of the guys who still has L and G bodies it's always good to ses them get some attention. And just to let you know those Shelby package wheels are called Pumpers, the Showflakes were what came on Spirit R/Ts.
I'm 36. I love cars made around when I was born. Ford, Dodge, Honda, Chevy, Toyota, etc. I don't care. They are all cool to me.
So my nephew wanted an early 2000s /late 90s Mitsubishi eclipse and I tried like gell to find him one that wasn't beat to shit or more expensive than when new, and spoiler alert I failed. Until I found a 1999 dodge avenger which unlike its 2010s descendant the 99 version is just a rebadged Mitsubishi eclipse. It's wild the eclipse body panels like bumper cover, headlights, and hood just bolt right on. And whatever deal was done with these two car manufacturers resulted in the Dodgubishi getting the Mitsubishi 2.5 liter V6 which makes plenty of power for a young driver and there was a turbo version sold for later on if he wants his own crippling automotive addiction 😊. So I told him all this and that I'd buy him the bits to re-mitsu the thing and it's been our winter project while he has his permit
Over the last month you won me over as a new primary source for YT auto content. Great job on the channel. Its got that authenticity to it that is hard to fake.
Thank you!
I agree great channel cool in fact 😂🎉🎉🎉
@DeadDodgeGarage Jamie,,, this thumbnail stopped me in my tracks.
It's two days after Christmas and you post the car that my beloved brother Paul left behind when the cancer took him.
I know from being a subscriber that we are brothers of different mothers.... but man,,, you're freaking me out how many cars we have in common.
I frikkin LOVE this channel.
In 1986 the company I worked for bought me a brand new Plymouth Caravelle with the 2.2L turbo engine. That car served for two years and 50,000 miles as my company car. I bought it from the company in 1988 and we drove it for another 150,000 miles. It only broke down once in the nine years it was with us. That Caravelle was well-loved and is still, 30 years after my son traded it in, the stuff of family legend. This Daytona is well worth saving. Have fun! Love your channel!
How many head gaskets? The guys who specialized doing them could literally disconnect everything, lift the head, slide in a new gasket, slam it all down, zip it up, fill up the coolant, burp it and roll it out in about 2 hours. They would laugh & say "Dead in about 50K miles, like clockwork." The real fix? Machine the head, Cometic (sold as "Mopar Performance MLS head gasket") gasket, new head hardware...then they lasted. Why Chrysler never put an MLS gasket in from the start? Beyond me- they were the best at steering average consumers to Toyota, Nissan, & Honda in the '80's & '90's. Really, all 3 handed their market shares over en masse
You must have really loved it as most of them didn’t last 7 years.
Company called direct connection had a performance head gasket.
@@f.chrisliuzzo7889 aka "Mopar Performance" when it went from "Direct Connection." All Mopar
@@olikat8 you're good! Head gasket at 55,000 miles. The only time the car stranded us was when the timing belt jumped a tooth or two about 2,000 miles later. The turbo was glowing cherry red when I opened the hood. It gave us another 140,000 after that.
My brother-in-law had a 1994 Daytona, and at one point, it started to do the same thing in reverse. That turned out to be a broken motor mount. I believe it was the rear mount. Later, when he had to change the clutch, he also had to change the severely heat-cracked flywheel. I hope this helps. 🤓
I was about to say this, a known issue in the K platform was the rear motor mount being broken especially on cars with a manual.
Yes. Mine was not shaking as bad but the back mount rubber was bad.
Rear motor mount being replaced?....no big deal but.....cheap/easy FIX..but ..going foward..it still has 0 power/a complete turd........even if if purfect.....god forbid...turn the a/c on...its a COMPLETE slug...120 hp at best?.....fact.......
I had 1988 model = I thought I was the coolest
I played with 2.2 K platforms way to much back then. The rear motormount was a problem to watch for, but the side mount was a problem too. The sidemount failing would take out CV shafts. Some of the aftermarket shafts used to come with a warning tag saying check the side mount before installing or warranty is void or some such.
Man, the fact that thing runs at all with that many miles on it is astounding. All the ones around here were absolutely beat to shit and died decades ago lol.
That’s incredible. Those are ultra rare now. They were pretty rare when they came out. That’s very cool. You found it and it’s still intact. I hope it gets restored real nice.
Daytonaaaaaa 👍 one of my favorite oldies!
Thankssssss!
As a former owner of an 87 Shelby charger glhs I can attest to the coolness of front drive turbo 2.2 engines.
I’m a retired master tech and bought one in late 90’s to play with and did all mods myself making most parts and got it to 25 psi and 563 hp. Got national spot on mother’s car show series with Don Garlitz. Went on power tour in 05. Lots of fun
Dayam!
I have the pics to prove it. Wanna talk
As a young tech I owned, drove, wrecked, got laid in and repaired more of these than I care to admit. I was screaming check the hall effect for falling apart in distributor as soon as you said it had a miss.
Gahhh! You beat me by 40 seconds!
if the hall effect / thing that works like a reluctor is falling off these cars act like they are possessed .
I never met chicks who would give it up in one of these cars.
Well, except my cousin’s wife. She would give it up in a slaughter house dumpster.
So go take the Mrs to the drive in movie and it will all become clear
I'm impressed you got laid in one of those, the aren't directly huge inside
Growing up in the 90s one of my friends moms had one of the IROC Daytonas also in white. This was the coolest car in the world to 7 year old me. This brought back so many memories.
That was my wife’s first brand new car, 1990 with 2.5 non turbo. Reliable for 8 years and traded at 155k, we even towed a pair of snowmobiles several times.
the reverse issue is either A- a broken motor mount, B- a bad clutch (damper springs broken?), or C-something else
I was going to suggest motor mounts too. The engine/trans is rotating forward freely when in reverse.
@ the GM “dog bone” motor mounts used to do this on manuals too
this was my HS era and I always wanted a Daytona or Conquest . this is bringing back some memories
There was a dude back in the day(86-87?) that had one of these. He thought he was Don Garlits.. He got outrun alot but he would race anyone. Good Times Jamie.. Love your channel
I know a guy who bought JOHN Voight's K-Lebaron convertible. Some people who've never seen a Seinfeld probably won't get that.
@@20CentMotors 😄
had the same guy with the same car i my tow, my dad said. thought his turbo daytona was faster than anyone else. tried to outrun my dads 66 belvedere with a warm 440. nope lol.
Cool car...Those were depressing days, but we never gave up hope for Horsepower to come back. 👍
It needs a " NO FEAR " window sticker
It had a pissing guy sticker but he scraped that off. Haha.
I was thinking of the old atomic fish emblem. 👍
Guaranteed it had one at some point lol
And an old-school monster sticker (from the top of the import can) somewhere on the dash
This video started it all for me. Glad I found this channel.
In the mid 80s, when I was just learning about cars, my first new car choice came down to one of these and a foxbody. Mustang won, but I’ve still always wanted one of these anyway. Great video.
As an owner of several Dakotas, can confirm that the tach is horrible and only works when it feels like it! The first thing I noticed before you mentioned it was that the door handles looked the same, and then the hood latch. Love it!
I never had an issue with any of my dakota tachs. Or my brother's 94 which had 260k when the original transmission gave out. Never even did a fluid change once and he got it at 20k miles. He sold it as it was pretty rusty being in nd/mn its whole life
Let me brag too..I have 69 swinger-69 coronet RT conv. Both 4spds 66 dodge a100 PU 273 3spd duals & 4brl with 26,000 original These 3 dodges are all show quality. a 98 Dakota-2011 jeep Cherokee 5.7 hemi - 66 dodge a100 van no door shorty van. And a 67 a100 van shortie with an 63 aluminum slant. I had a 67x in 1971 and a 69 Swinger in 74. First car I ever drove was dad’s 64 440 318 poly sedan. Yes, I am a MOPAR dude as well. That’s why I love your channel!! Anyway, I too got into the L bodies recently. A 1984 rampage and 1983 scamp pu’s. I then bought a rusty running and driving 88 daytona Shelby Z 175 hp to yank the turbo package to put into my 100hp scamp pu. BUT, I Then fell in love with the Shelby and so i then bought another ! A 1988 Shelby Z drag strip car (rust free)to transfer the guts from the rusty Z into the rust free body. Now I will still have left the 2.2 racing turbo 2 and 5spd out of the drag Z ( modifications unknown) to upgrade into the 83 scamp. I also have a pair slicks!! hehe. I knew nothing about the 2.2 turbo 2 but I am learning. Glad to see you getting one in your garage! I too play guitar so even though I am 72…I can relate to your obsessions and enjoy the videos. Keep it up!!
My dad has a ‘89 turbo 5-speed Daytona. I absolutely love the car and it’s a blast to drive
I love 68-70 b-body Mopars but I grew up with Turbo Mopars. Back in 88 I was 18 an had a 70 Roadrunner project and bought a used 4,000 mile 87 Shelby Charger GLHS as a daily. I know I was 18 with a 1 year old car but 11 grand wasn't hard to finance. Ran my Shelby at Englishtown NJ and did a 14.87 not bad in 88 for a motor that looks like a twinkie.
I'm starting to get nostalgic about these cars, I still remember when they were the future, hard to believe it was so long ago!👍
I did so many timing belts and head gaskets on K cars in the 90’s, could do them in my sleep. Fond and not so fond memories.
I'd get the timing belt done in 30 minutes after the 300th one
Yeah timing belt and head gasket did a lot of them headed down to 45 minutes😂
I was always a Mopar guy. I still remember all the articles about the GLH and GLHS while in high school. Little Omni, that surprised many
Man I love these old Daytonas. I had one of the excessively rare IROC R/Ts and it was nutty to drive. 290 whp with a boost controller and an exhaust for an early ‘90’s car is crazy.
I’ve been reading about that engine. Crazy indeed.
Mopar actually sold that engine for a number of years. It was in their catalog as well as some other race parts and some different computers with aggressive tuning in them. A local had that engine in a Caravan and it would run high 10's in a quarter mile.
Holy shit, i asked for turbo stuff yesterday, poof, today, i .hsve been rewarded, lol. Love all the content.
You're welcome! Haha. And thanks.
Don't give up on it! I had a nasty glh omni back in the day, it suprised a few folks. love all era's
That car reminds me of early 90's Plymouth "duster" I drove to high school. It was a fun little car to drive, the steering was so responsive, you could rail that thing on turns. Unfortunately, it blew a head gasket, and we got rid of it.
I had a 92 Duster(new) 3.0l Mitsu with a 5 speed, I junked it in 2006 with 360.000km ORIGINAL clutch/timing belt and water pump, it was fun!
Love to see the Daytona on here! I myself am a fan of them and have owned many of them in many variations . The only one i have now is a red 1990 vnt car that is patiently waiting for me to work on it!
ive been waiting for a video on this car when you showed it in your other video the other day. i had an 89 daytona shelby and i absolutely loved it, if your looking for parts check out FWD performance, they deal specifically with these cars. you could also get an unlocked (stage 5) ecu and you can run much higher boost.
Wait, what....born in 90? Dang, i thought you were older than me. 85 your Mopar knowledge rivals the older guys i know. Nice
I get that a lot. Haha.
I had a friend with on of these and he got it into the 13s with about 18lb boost. It had traction problems and was hard to get it to go any faster but It was Fun .
LMAO!!. I can't remember the last time I worked on one of those, I do remember doing a lot of head gaskets on them. If you have to change plug wires you have to sqeeze those points together with plyers and pull them out, new wires slide in and snap in place. I think the Map sensor is inside passenger side kick panel, now for the vibration check all the motor mounts, what's happening is the motor is sitting a lot lower then it should be witch is causing the inner joints on the axles to slide all the way in when you go forward the tilts in a way that the axles slide outward but when you put it in reverse the engine tilts the opposite way causing the axles to move inwards and the joints are getting jammed and trying to turn at the same time. You can put a floor jack under the oil pan and jack it up see how high it goes or power brake it back and forth see if the motor moves back and forth or put it on the drive on lift put it up in the air and use a screw jack and lift the motor and check the angles of the axles see if they change, if the inner joints are lower then the outer joints you have a problem.
There it is, been waiting for this "gem".
I had a friend in high school, his mom had an Omni with a blown head gasket and they just kept driving it. His dad had something called a Dodge Colt (also known as a Plymouth Champ) it was a turbo charged 4 cylinder with some kind of twin stick shifter. The first stick was I believe a 4 speed but the second stick said power and economy. We were still into muscle cars, it was the 80s but I remember it actually being kind of a fun car to drive. I can't believe you were born the year I got married. I learn something almost every time I watch thank you
Havent watched the video yet but the problem is you have a bad ground
Ok 🤣
You only saw the opening scene of the wet ground?
Now that's funny😅
My guess would be poor paint.
I built myself an 85 Daytona turbo Z when I was back in my early 20's, (30 years ago), and it ran pretty good for a couple summers. Till a rod started knocking and, I lost my license and just, well, gave up on life.
If the turbo is still good you should be able to take piece of wire and wrap it around the wast-gate linkage and just hold it in the closed position and you should get all kinds of boost. If it doesn't get any boost that way, then I'd say with about a 98% chance the turbo is most likely bad, and replacing a turbo on one of those cars without pulling the engine is very difficult...
Oh, replacing a starter is pretty bad too...
As far as the jumping in reverse, I believe there's a short "shock absorber" motor mount that's at the rear of the engine, kinda right below the turbo that's probably all worn-out, it's a special absorber mount that was only on the turbo cars, I just put a "rubber bushing solid link" type on mine from a non-turbo car and it was fine, other than that maybe the clutch disk has been put in backwards???
Those cars can be very fast, but everything throughout the drive train has got to be in quite decent shape to have any kind of reliability, I went through 2 engines and 3 transmissions in mine. But of course mine didn't have the Getrag trans.
Jamie been watching you over a year now, and your mopar knowledge is over my head and I'm 15 years older. You have a wonderful persona and your attitude "and I don't feel like it right now" sums up what me and every gearhead says most days.
These cars and the GLS Omni turbos would smoke our Chevelles and Novas with big blocks in 1995.
I know it should be quicker than it is. I’ll get to the bottom of it. Thank you!
This reminds me of my 88 Daytona pacifica,,,2.2 turbo white with blue inside loved it with t-tops 😊
I attended University Technical Institute in Houston in 1985, and they only bought parts at one special parts store in downtown Houston with top notch quality parts.
I bought parts at cheap auto stores near my house for convenience until I had too many new parts malfunctioning needing to replace at my expense, it paid to go further to buy better quality parts.
Parts in early 1980s became very poor quality, that made me look for another profession.
yeah. my cv shafts disintegrated, on my 86 shelby charger, replaced them with el-cheapo parts they lasted less than a day. back then the cv shafts for those cars were $1000 each. i miss that car.
@1heavyelement also that Brand New 1984-85 Charger was a lemon because the ignition switch had too much grease on contacts inside it that caused an intermittent malfunction in cold mornings when grease stiffened, it wouldn't make any contact below certain temperatures overnight in Houston Texas, and when towed to dealership it would make contact and dealership couldn't troubleshoot it.
Until I experimented with it, and figured it out, then dealership kept vehicle several days until it malfunctioned one cold morning for them, they said I was correct about ignition switch.
Interesting on how a previous owner went to town on the interior with white paint. I can relate. I’m rejuvenating a 1969 Fury III convertible and the previous owner not only spray bombed the firewall (along with various components and wiring) black, he also spray painted every bit of the interior black, including the seats. He also did some bizarre things with the dash, kickdown linkage and cooling system. But that’s another story.
People underestimate the FUN of these cars. They are/were very quick and fast, not just "period fast" but still today. My buddy had a 1990 back "in the day". I remember that thing would 0-60MPH barely going into 2nd gear, in about 5 seconds. Thats faster than advertised.
Nothing like a ddg vid to make my day
The dash is like that because they modified the dash to work with the airbag column. 87-89 Daytonas had that same external appearance but the interior was the same as the 84-86 models with the "four eye" front end. But 88-89 had those stupid passive seat belts.
Also the vacuum routing really isnt that bad, there are a few simplified vacuum diagrams out there, the thin lines to the solenoids were prone to cracking.
with that clutch shudder, i would check motor mounts and front suspension for wear
I've also read that motor mounts replaced with solid polyurethane types can possibly do it. Who knows?
OMG I love these, my best friend had one and it was the first car I ever put to 120 mph. It was totally on a closed track and not on a country highway when we were supposed to be at school.
I had an 85 Daytona “Turbo” model with a 5 speed. Lots of fun racing period Camaros, especially after installing a performance computer that hiked the boost. It could hang with 5.0 Mustangs up to about 50 mph. Drove it to nearly 200,000 miles in 12 years. Pretty stiff ride, but 4-wheel drifts were fun!
I've owned many. Personally I love the interior of the 91 and later, and the pop up headlights.
This video reminds me why I should keep my positive memories as just that, memories. These are the worst, and most fun vehicles I have owned.
Adjust the arm, disconnect the vacuum, and get ALL THE BOOST. The thing will kill tires up to 60mph... Until the turbo over spools and then it's junk.
Check the ignition distributor shutter wheel in the distributor because they come loose and throw the timing off
Oh, good to know! I did look at it, but did not know to check it for wobbling. Thanks!
I almost bought one of these in 92, they were peppy and sharp looking for the money. Bought an 85 Trans Am GTA instead and built a 383 with a fat cam for it. LOTS more fun was had in that, and i do not regret the decision. Still, its nice to see some of them are still around.
i should stop by and bring Zerbs with me, he knows those goofy things pretty well. He has a turbo Eagle he built that is pretty impressive.
It definitely needs a day or two with Zerbs. I sent it back from whence it came, but I'm sure I'll be seeing it again soon enough...
I'm amazed at how many times you have a vehicle that reminds me of something I have owned at one time or another. In this case, I had a 93 Dodge Shadow, 2.5 non-turbo 5 speed, so it was fairly similar to this Daytona. It wasn't a bad car, pretty peppy for a 4 banger, good mileage, and fun to drive. And it got around quite well in the snow and ice as long as I had grip tires on the front.
I got a 90 Daytona Shelby with a Variable Nozzle Turbo. Same color. Damn I gotta get working on it
Was reading about that. Your 2.2 Turbo III with VNT made like 174 HP to this 2.5’s 152 or whatever. These make more torque though. At least they’re supposed to. This one currently makes significantly less horsepower. Haha.
In 1990 my brother bought a new white Daytona Shelby with the rare 2.2 VNT turbo and 5 speed manual. Awesome car in its day and gave excellent gas mileage. He sold it to a collector but eventually got in the hands of someone who trashed it. Pretty sure they were non interference engines so won't be destroyed by bad cam timing.
If you have no success with the wastegate rod adjustment it could be the internal flapper valve not fully seating over the wastegate bypass hole, so the wastegate will never be fully closed, creating lag and diminished total boost. I saw this once with a brand new Precision aftermarket turbo. The owner remedied it by converting to an external wastegate.
My current project is a 1999 Dodge Avenger. With the 2.5l it's proven to be quite the experience restoring it.
It also has the peel away paint as did the Chevy and Ford.
The camera flying is our way of feeling the “UNLIMITED POWER”. Without that it just wouldn’t be believable.
My parents had a few turbo K cars in the 80s, and new from the factory I don’t remember any of them being impressive.
I had an 84 Lazer 2.2 Turbo 5spd that was a phenomenal car and then an 89 Daytona 2.5 that was a complete piece of Dumpster fire . It spit and sputtered and all kinds of electrical issues. Automatic transmission was the only thing that worked correctly.
I had an 84 laser xe 2.2 turbo 5 speed as well. Loved that car. Looked exactly like the car in the commercial except had a cloth red/burgundy interior that matched the outside stripe. th-cam.com/video/pdb5-aZHgKE/w-d-xo.html
I had an '84 base Daytona in HS that i paid 75 bucks for. Hood had popped open at speed and smashed the windshield, paint falling off, and no brakes. Changed hood, scabbed together front brakes only, and rattle-canned my first flame job using cardboard stencils. Also tried the old "loosen the head, slide out bad head gasket, and slide in a new one". Then had an oil leak in no.4 cylinder. Every 35 miles i had to pull the and clean off spark plug. Got 3 fun years out of it. I have a Turbo Z Daytona to remind me of them days.
I’m here because you asked me to, oh, yeah! I have one of those, but yours are real fancy
This one is ultra fancy. But also slow
My family had a couple of these cars, hmm, mid late 80’s I believe. My first introduction to front wheel drive in the snow- very impressive!! Peppy little cars that looked pretty good. I would drive them in the winter while my 66 Charger rested inside a garage :)
My aunt had a 1982-83 Camaro in 1983 that I drove a couple times, and it felt like the transmission torque converter wasn't operating properly, very slow and very poor mileage, felt llke brakes were dragging.
A friend had a 1984-85 Dodge Charger in 1985, and the Constant Volocity Universal Joint broke when turning wheels sharply and accelerating rapidly.
Oh man! I had exactly that car, 91 Shelby in red with cloth interior. It also ran like garbage - I replaced all the vacuum lines and it turned out the timing belt had jumped 2 teeth. Fixed that and the front motor mount, installed a manual boost controller set to 13 and it put a smile on my face every day. I miss that car.
I remember doing the key thing on many of my cars in the time frame
Jamie this is an interesting car and has a lot of Mitsubishi Starion styling in the door design and interior switches and other components
We never got them in Australia and I love this styling, can’t wait to see what you do with this car
Merry Christmas and happy new year from Australia
Guys used to mix and match these turbo engines. They seemed to come up with some quick little cars 😊
Reliant K car! He was doing sub 10 second passes on the stock block 2.2.
Major change was the addition of another oil circuit because cylinder 4 (or one can’t remember) was always starved.
Another interesting car you don't see that much of on YT. I knew when I saw this in the background it was gonna be one of the next vids. Nice!
My fondest memories of the new K Turbo’s was that whoever designed the engine call out badges evoked the Dodge performance engine badges of the ‘60’s (273 4BBL thru 426 Hemi). Thanks for all the great YT content in 2024, Jamie - all the best to you and your family in 2025!
Reverse shudder, Check motor mounts. Primarily front.
Hey Jamie, I would check the extension tube/drive shaft that bolts to the lower engine block. it extends to the passenger side to allow equal length axle shafts to combat torque steer. it is not uncommon to find the ugly cast iron mount to be loose or stripped. it can cause nasty clunks and nasty vibrations.
Great idea, I will take a look. Thanks!
I have a red 91 with the v6, long story but its supercharged. I also have a white 93 IROC R/T (yes a real one) At first glance i thought i was looking at my car! same pealing paint. The R/T has the dohc and getrag transmission. Basic rule of thumb... turbo 1 no intercooler, turbo 2 has intercooler, turbo 3 is the dohc r/t and the 2.5 with the vnt was a turbo 4
I believe the VNT were all intercooled 2.2 engines, and the 2.5 had a conventional turbo, and no intercooler(?)
@@johnmcmullen456 The short lived Garrett VNT25 turbo engine was only a 2.2L, yes. And intercooled. It is also correct to say all the 2.5L turbo engines were non-intercooled and had the Turbo I monkier.
DUDE!! Sixpackdan!! There's a name I haven't heard since the 3.0 forum days! Reaper here!
@@pgmurray76 In the US this is true, but Mexico did get intercooled 2.5 turbo cars. But, that is because of their bad gas and high altitude.
@@rocketsurgeon11 Sweetness! I noted this in Wikipedia. I remember trying to get a Mexican 2.4L turbo engine for a 1995 Dodge Stratus in 2001. Didn't happen! Honda engine from anywhere - yes. Mexico engine - not possible. Nobody cared.1995 car because it is emission exempt here.
Had a 1984 dodge daytona turbo gtz loved that car regretted selling it 3 yrs later. Bought it new of the lot had loads of fun in it. Black on black stick.
Good looking body style 😎
Its only a day after christmas. So sooner than I thought. Thank you.
I aaaaallmost did a Christmas video but was afraid everybody would be too busy to watch. And to be honest I was a bit too busy to make it. Haha.
@DeadDodgeGarage both make complete sense.
Reverse might be a motor mount
I had the thought, but it’s so violent. Just have a hard time believing it could do all that. Need to have someone help me check.
@@DeadDodgeGarage Probably a combination of bad rear mount (also known as a Bobble strut) and shifter not engaging the gears all the way due to wasted bushings. Also check to see if the wastegate control solenoid has a plugged up top, they came from the factory with a piece of foam on the open port and it will disintegrate and clog it up solid. Also if the hall effect goes bad it will prevent the computer from turning on the fuel pump (Found that out the hard way). And the unknown small vacuum line might be the vacuum supply for the hvac case. And as always, make sure it has the ground strap that goes from the back of the intake to the firewall.
Combo bad mount and oil on the flywheel/ disk
Cool looking car. I think that some TH-camr could make a living just doing headliners.
Aloha! I remember the old days working on my Shadow ES, Shelby CSX, Shelby Lancer and 1991 Spirit R/T (The best of the lot) on cloudy days with a wet ground with mold everywhere in Washington State.
Good times that are happily behind me.
A 1984Toyota Land Cruiser that was indestructible cured me of shabby Mopars.
I drove one of these in the mid to late 90’s a used car event at the old Tacoma Cheany baseball stadium next to what was then the soapbox derby track. It was red. Very red. And it had that gertag transmission and the hottest version of one of those Chrysler turbos they ever put in one of those cars. That car was a serious hoot! It was the first car I ever drove that went through the gears faster than I could keep up with it. That puppy was FAST! No then current Mustang or Camaro was going to show tail lights to that little hot puppy. They were going to be trying to catch it! I almost came home with that car I was so thrilled with it. But I was too broke at the time to swing it.
I built my first car in 1990.
I had a 93 2.5 naturally aspirated. It was white with the same spoiler. I loved the turn signal stalk and headlight controls. It was very intuitive. We just need to Velcro a discman above the center vents and run a tape adapter for some mid 90s tunes. Thanks for tripping down memory lane.
When Carroll Shelby died it was a significant day for me , but when I said to a friend " did you hear that Carroll Shelby died ? " , his reply was , "who's she ? " .
Oh man this is fantastic! I owned a 1987 Daytona Shelby Z. Def want to find one again. The T Tops on mine were an awesome feature…even though the car itself was a $650 heap
Hi Jamie, Those cars were pure gravy to work on. They always had head gasket issues. Warranty would pay 4hrs. You could do in an hour. Also the 2.2 and 2.5 were horrible for piston slap, but they would still last for years. Never could figure it out.
All the best in the new year!
I had a 10 year old 89 Daytona ES Turbo in high school. It was a pretty darn good car and I often miss it.
Yay another weird Chrysler product!
i had one of these. An ‘85 5spd. It always felt like i was driving in a bathtub😂
Can you even get AC parts for it??? I can't believe these things even exist???
I... don't know, and thankfully don't have to find out. Haha.
I had a 1985 Chrysler Daytona turbo Z which was pretty much the exact same motor. I think I worked on every component that exists on that car... Replaced starter countless times etc. My boost was going down as my millage was going up. I removed my turbo I think 3 times on that car. Last time was due to boost not building up much past 5-6 psi. It was due to cracked turbine housing so the waste gate would not seal. To fix it is would have to replace the manifold and the turbo, flange etc. If you need information I know a lot on these car. Good luck with you project !
Very interesting. This turbo appears to be “new” so I’m curious what could be up. We’ll get there.
75 Dodge colt
Cool little car. I don't recall seeing may of those around in the 90's. A friend inTexas bought a new 91 Dodge Spirit, silver 4 door sedan with a manual transmission. I liked it- was peppy & fun to drive. Around the time I was moving back to Minnesota (fall of 93) I went with him to test drive a new 1993 Dodge Intrepid. I really liked those cars when they were brand new! We test drove a few, but a couple weeks later I was back in Minnesota and he had decided on buying a then brand spanking new 1994 Thunderbird. But those Intrepids - the dash had enough room to comfortably sleep 2 adults on it .
That "Cold air intake" sure looks like a great "Puddle water straw..."- BTW, the only Halls effect pick -up that works in the K-pars is the Mopar ones. All others? All trash
That's what I'm hearing...
blast from the past ...my first car was an 83 reliant K....i used to know those 2.2and 2.5s inside out....did tons of head swaps...weirdest thing i remember is taking a vw 1.6 or 1.7 distributor that had points and making it fit a 2,2 to bypass the broken electronic ignition system
Have you ever bought spark plugs and you open up the box and there's no threads on the spark plug?
Uh…
Alright, that's a good one. Haha.
I worked as a mechanic in a dodge dealer in the late 80s. I remember these things always needed MAP sensors.
YES!
Ahhhh! Crack yer Crown on the blame sharp corner of the door? Feature of the Crown Vic...which has the added Pierce yer Skull on the trunk latch! Features! Both of which must be "selling points"? (dang near knocked myself out yesterday, getting groceries out of trunk of 03 Crown Vic) Almost as good as LEGOS for learning werds that will get you "blacklisted" on TH-cam....
Baaahaha. I’m not familiar with the Crown Vic unit, but I am certainly a veteran of the classic Mopar secondary hood latch, known around here as the skull…fricker…
I had some kind of similar car. Dodge. It was a beast. No turbo..it would 60mph in first gear. So I know that must be a fun ride when running rite. Stick with it. Its all a learning process. It could be a good beater. Quick sand some tractor white..good luck. 👍👍✌️🇬🇧
Its nice to see this; I always had a soft spot for these and the Shadow/Sundance cars, though I only ever drove one or two as rentals.
Amazing how much 2.2 stuff Direct Connection/Mopar Performance used to provide for these engines.
Good video it's great to see one of these again , I have worked on several back in the day, the blue and white ones are my favorite color combo. Thanks for the video!
Really enjoyed watching you put some time and love (?) into getting this happy lil shitbox running properly again. I remember the fond (sarcasm implied) memories I have of my 89' Daytona Turbo 2.2, which never seemed to run quite right, no matter what I did. oh and btw I love the lil Sesame Street Drcula, "ha, ha, ha" laugh. 👍👍👍 Looking forward to seeing more with this and the 81' Challenger.
Loving your more tutorial approach on the K cars. I own some Mopars and also prefer the older muscle like my 68 Barracuda 340 so, can't really put my finger on how I'm enjoying these other than, you speak very well, especially in tutorial mode and lots of information flows out in seemingly effortless way that is easy on the ears. Congrats.
Thank you!
I owned an 85 as my first car, these don't get enough love on TH-cam.
