  • Particle nature of light and how Albert Einstein used his theory & concept of Work Function to explain photoelectric effect.
    We see how did Einstein find similarity between the mathematics of kinetic theory of gases and Planck’s derivation of Blackbody radiation. That inspired him to believe that light is made up of small particles like gas molecules.
    Based on this, he gave his particle theory of light:
    • Light is train of particles or discrete quanta called photons. Each photon has energy, E = hf. Here “h” is Planck’s constant and “f” is frequency of wave.
    • Light quanta are emitted or absorbed on an all or nothing basis
    • A light quantum when absorbed by a metal delivers its entire energy to one electron.
    • There is a minimum energy required to free an electron from any metal. This is called as Work Function. If energy is less than work function, electrons are not emitted. Work Function depends on the material.
    Based on these postulates, he was able to explain all the below experiments results of Photoelectric effect:
    • Minimum or a threshold frequency below which the photoelectric emission doesn’t happen.
    • Individual energy of the emitted electrons doesn’t depend on the intensity of the light. It depends on the frequency
    • Instantaneous emission of electrons when threshold frequency is shone on a metal

    I have question....what do u mean when u say something is a wave or something is a particle how r both different from each other.....and when we talk about light is the effect of it is a wave or it's a wave just like that which we can see oscillating in reality about it's mean position...would be glad if u can help in this.....and one more thing what do u mean by 'frequency' of a photon...i mean it's a particle isn't it??????

    If an electron is moving in space if a photon hit the electron then hv energy is given to electron .then velocity of electron become 10^9 by making kinetic energy equal to hv here v is frequency of gamma ray. Pls explain sir
