That USMM is a surveyor marker (Mineral Marker) that would have also been used to record deposits found in that area.

The General Land Office devised a process where the mineral surveys would be tied into a local point known as a “Location Monument” or sometimes referred to as a “Mineral Monument”. These monuments were usually designated USLM or USMM. This square nail (above) is likely the tie-in point on USLM No. 54 near Silver City,

I was going to comment that it was likely a federal survey marker of some type since I had seen similar before, but thanks for the extra details, The founders of this nation were serious about surveying land and mapping it.

15:00. My Great Great Maternal Grandfather, Everett Davidson, worked on that railroad in the very early 1900's. He lived in a crude tent on site and went back to Reno, Nevada once a month to be with his wife.Shirley. We have a small photo album of his escapades.

11.24 Note the ad's address, 437-423(?) South Spring St. According to one online history of the Frank & Harris clothing store in LA, the start of THIS address (for South Spring St. location) was 1905/1907. The 300 block was in 1905. The 400 block of S. Spring St. was in use starting in 1907. The online people use 447-443 S. Spring St. The store apparently was here from 1907-1925. In 1925 it relocated to S Hill St. then years later to Broadway.

Always nice to find an old right-of-way intact to some degree. There's bits and piece of the "St Louis, Rocky Mountain and Pacific" that's visible along the US 87 between Raton and Des Moines NM. Temporary railroads that serve their purpose until coal or gold are completely mined out and then the abandonment usually comes some years later.

Colemanite is a mineral which must be what they were mining. It can be used in the manufacture of heat resistant glass...maybe like Pyrex? Maybe for observation glass in wood stoves, etc. There certainly wasn't much effort in long term residency but by the appearance of all the road cutting and tailing piles on the hill sides they were there for a while. The news papers help to block the drafts...i noticed some car illustrations and they appeared to be early 20s but im with you on time frame. Graves were interesting. Since the mine didn't appear to have been there long enough to have accumulated so many burial site I wonder if there had been an event like an explosion, collapse or possibly a result from the 1918 to 20 flu epidemic. Fantastic exploration. Keep up the good work...you're my favorite Hussey

Well worth the watch time, start to finish. Those lonely graves marked with weathered old wooden crosses certainly speak of a hardscrabble life and an inglorious ending to it. I wonder if they all died around the same time - maybe the Spanish Flu epidemic swept through the camp, or perhaps there was a cave-in at the mine. If only those old stone shelters could talk. Excellent adventure! Be well, and stay safe out there.

The General Land Office devised a process where the mineral surveys would be tied into a local point known as a “Location Monument” or sometimes referred to as a “Mineral Monument”. These monuments were usually designated USLM or USMM. Keep up the good work WH.🙂
