An animation showing the screw pump designed by Archimedes of Syracuse.
The Archimedes screw was designed to lift water from low lying areas to higher areas for irrigation purposes.
Archimedes screw can also be found in today's machines, from industrial manufacturing plants right down to miniature pumps in modern engines. - วิทยาศาสตร์และเทคโนโลยี
You need more power to turn a big screw, so four small ones distribute the power more efficiently and directly. Also there is less energy wasted in sound and friction.
Fantastic, comprehensive Thank You.
"auger", or Archimedes Screw. Very clear explanation.
Nice and I like it. It really works on my water project about Archimedes Screw
Ah, thanks a ton man, I'm doing a report on Archimedes, and I didn't quite get how his screw worked, but I get it now. Once again, thanks a lot. :)
u still alive
Aye u still alive dawg?
The hanging garden of the babylonian was using the the water screw way before Archimedes allegedly invented the Archimedes screw in 200 bc. the Hanging Garden was around 600 bc
Wow! Great stuff!
★Awesome Report Thank-you
Brilliant! Thank you. I understand it now..the ancients were brilliant
This is also the principle behind the mechanism to discharge concrete from a concrete truck.
i love archamides
Very great video. Thnx
Very interesting! Can you tell me the mathematical formula is to calculate the surface area of the spiral and the water flow rate of the Archimedean screw? Thank you very much.
According to Wikipedia, "a pump is a device that moves fluids (liquids or gases), or sometimes slurries, by mechanical action. Pumps can be classified into three major groups according to the method they use to move the fluid: direct lift, displacement, and gravity pumps." So no, a pump is just required to use mechanical action; but in most cases, you are correct, a pump uses pressure difference to displace a fluid.
Archimedes was a freakin genius. anybody reading this could suggest some 9th grade science fair ideas that have something to do with his works
dont worry bro I got you covered: do a project where you have two screws with water at the bottom and you make them fight each other for more water it will be great
@@neil8688 think its a lil too late
who is your audience? How is this video different than a picture? This didn't give me an extra gram of information about how this works.
Information is not measured in grams you idiot!
TH-cam Comments Suck Who is the idiot, the guy who speaks in a metaphor or the guy who can't understand it?
+semihsezerify, that's exactly my thought :/
If you knew what was the meaning of this your brain would explode instantly. Seek out the truth my friend it may be worthwhile.
it is a really nice video and not really hard to make but still you made it and I will give it a like.
Nice!
Ok, very beauty, but what mechanism rotate this screw's archimedes ???
Thank you
What do you mean that would never work? This pump has been used for thousands of years!!!!
Sorry, but you really should point out that an Archemedian screw isn't a pump, but a water lifter. This is why you need multiples of them with intermediate holding pools to raise water more than atmospheric pressure will allow ( 10 meters approx )
Ive got a chocolate fountain that uses the screw method. If I opened the mechanism. could I use that same pump to make an indoor water fountain ? Decorate it with stones and plants etc...will it work ?
thank you
Query: what if it was placed horizontally in a container of water and air from a compressor was introduced at the bottom, would it turn it?
@makro80 Haha, thats weird, maybe its not showing me the url you see because its my video? I still see the same url as earlier
Thanks for Helping
More videos please
@SmexyBeastChannel Because the animation wouldn't look as cool then :). Only joking, i thought 4 small screws would exaggerate and show how the screws are used to raise the water to high places, sometimes it was done in steps as shown above
Excelent thought
nice
There are two massive Archimedes screws at Schlitterbahn
cool video
+Mim Ren thanks
+Mim Ren np
+Mim Ren haha u r so funny
It can be likened to a "mechanical drinking straw"
Thanks
Does anyone know when he invented the screw? This could be very help-full thanks! :)
Victoria Friend between 800-700 bc
It was around before Archimedes was even born.
Archimedes learned about it when he visited Egypt and it was in use in Mesopotamia, for 350 years before Archimedes. Maykop Culture in North Caucasus (around 4 millennium b.c.) has also been known for inventing some of the most advanced agriculture tools of prehistoric times. The technique of water screw itself lies in the crankshaft method that Celts of Iberia invented in 5 century b.c.
Archimedes never even visited Egypt, kang, stop lying.
@@alqamenesh7433 it's a valid theory, and you know no more than the rest of us. Archimedes himself never claimed it as his own invention, it was credited to him after his death
@@preternatural3231 I think that Archimedes deviced a basic nuclear reactor but never bothered to write it down , the source of this being chiefly myself. It's about as valid as OP's claim in terms of sheer evidence, considered he makes outlandish claims about things that never happened/existed such as Archimedes visiting Egypt or Celtic crankshafts.
@@preternatural3231 What you thick-headed nutjobs do not understand is that your personal claims do not really constitute proof of anything and once you make these and expect people to believe them based on your sole word, then by the same logic if you were coherent you'd be obliged to admit that any other similar guesswork was equally valid.
Do we still use Archimedes Screw today?
No
Were are they
That's saying something! Pity that comment has been removed, though by the name of the contributor, I can easily imagine what they said.
However, I suspect that the name of the contributor tells us something about their purpose - to just say that everything is wrong.
what if you put a mill at the end so the falling water spins the mill, and the spinning of the mill possibly could spin the screws which will pull the water in the pool below the mill to reach the top to fall onto the wheel continuously? im just spitballing here, any1 with a better knowledge of this field have any insight as to the possibility of this?
Perpetual machines are impossible, mainly due to friction (the mill and screw needs a hinge to turn) and the 2nd law of thermodynamics. It will stop in place sooner or later.
Thanks :)
Good
Where ?
Nice 🎉🎉🎉🙏🙏
Dude, these things are very common in the industry. They're called "screw conveyors".
still need energy to rotate the archimedes screw to lift water
Hanging Gardens of Babylon used prior to the birth or Arcemedy
Sometimes it's even better to use a couple of small screws instead of a big one due to frictional resistance and bending being more prominent in longer variants.
Look at me! I'm responding to a 1 year old comment!
Straw?
"Give me a lever..." very long expression (20 words)
ΔΟΣ ΜΟΙ ΠΑ ΣΤΩ ΚΑΙ ΤΑΝ ΓΑΝ ΚΙΝΗΣΩ (8 words)
En español: Dame un punto de apoyo y moveré el mundo (9 palabras)
why not have just one big screw instead of the 4 little ones
What dose that mean
is it me or this thing rotates the wrong way?
its not my video but i see it as what u do too
Wow
Try 4 it looks far to loose
Only when she is in the mood for it.
@EpicPhysics mine says something like that and then: FFUUUUUUUUAAAAWA. hehe..
In the tin?
@metallo7 this is the google translation, google never lies.
δώσε μου ένα μοχλό αρκετά μεγάλο χρονικό διάστημα και μια υπομόχλιο για τις οποίες ο τόπος και θα κινεί τον κόσμο
21 words not 8...
It's you.
👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏
If i thought about this without knowing about it when i pondered about how to lift water. Am i smart?
Difference in a pregnant woman and a lightbulb. You can unscrew a lightbulb.
Get that loose screw
This was ridiculous lol
is this for chids ?
If you guys don't have something nice to say, keep it to yourself. The video actually explained a lot.
Use what you've got

Too bad all these brilliant men are asleep in their graves. If they only could have left books. Like how they built the pyramids-still a mystery. Leave the knowledge and wisdom by writing books etc. So generations from now they'll know how you did some clever thing
IKR!?!?!
archimedes' friend made a biography of him, but it was lost when the romans took over syracuse
Obviously, as Archimedes invented it, the opening statement that it has been used throughout history is incorrect. History started before Archimedes.
+Vaughan Johnson lol wut
No I don't talk to the dead
HANGING GARDENS
You can't even make this crap up oh my god
Whoooo

I'm running late, but trying to make it still.
And I thought this would be a porn movie. Okay, bad joke. But seriously, this was a very clever idea of Archimedes. If only his ideas had survived to the present day intact. Where would we be now I wonder. On Mars, perhaps? This guy was doing calculus nearly 2000 years before Newton and Liebnitz.
Bob Sutton Concrete trucks?
Bob Sutton ,it still exist, we used this system for clearing the rain water accumulation and transfer out to the sea...
Step up
For if
lol look at the url
hahaha that would never work, cool idea though
do you have rocks for brains?

This does not help with my homework
NO
Doesn't explain anything
