“you‘re a bandit like me“ sounds really similar like “you‘re abandoned like me“ shes a mastermind

i love the lyric “perched in the dark”. since perched means to be situated high up but she’s in the dark it could mean that she doesn’t exactly know what she’s standing on and she could fall at any minute (whether fall in love or lose stability).
another possible meaning is that she’s situated at a strategical point to observe what’s going on underneath her, but everything is actually dark - she thinks she’s in a position where she sees and knows everything and everything is under control, but she is actually in the dark, she never saw this cowboy coming into her life and herself falling in love, she never had it planned.

Great analysis as always. To me it is interesting that the song starts at a tennis court: a place where 2 opponents play a game (a dangerous one) and like in all tennis matches, there can be only one winner. To me, the protagonist won the game as the other one hangs to the protagonist’s lips (the protagonist tells things as beautiful as the mythical Babylon gardens) but at price. The protagonist knows she will never love again because the other one is the one.
They are both con artists who can make others believe things that don’t exist but don’t we all want love to last forever when we fall in love? Isn’t that the sweetest con we all want to believe in?

ooh i never put the tennis court setting into interpretation before. but that actually makes sense

i love how you're interpreting the tennis court, you're right..tennis is a high stakes game with only one winner...and they're dancing on it too 🤔
i really enjoy how you're viewing the "hanging" of the lips, like it's in the context of winning/losing the game. i didn't consider that but it's a beautiful way to think about it...i can visualize the protagonist smirking, realizing they have a bit of an upper hand in that lyric...kind of makes me think about the power dynamics a bit too!
i love your interpretation! thank you for sharing it with us! 😊

I always thought that it ended with him stealing her money. The relationship starts at a tennis court and switches back and forth between “you’re a cowboy like me” and “you’re a bandit like me” almost like a tennis game itself. The power in the relationship switch back and forth as well which we can see in who will pay for it in the end, as in “only if they pay for it” versus “and I know I’ll pay for it”. Notice also how it’s never the other person who will pay for it.
After she “locked it down” the other person is hanging from protagonists lips, insinuating that they are the person in power at that time. It can indicate that she locked the relationship down with this person but also that she succeeded in swindling someone, securing money. Going off of that, the protagonist now embodies the very people they both swindle, a person with assets, which is why I believe that the last line in the bridge is important to discern the ending. “Forever is the sweetest con” is not a hopeful ending. It insinuates that the protagonist believes that it won’t last forever which leads to “I’ve had some tricks up my sleeve” which indicates that she no longer has them. I believe the protagonist got swindled herself but she was prepared to spend the money she locked down in order to pursue the love she felt for the other person. She no longer has the tricks because she’s no longer engaging in the game, she quit swindling and became a victim of it instead. The “I’m never gonna love again” could mean that she quit swindling for good and that she is quitting love because it ruined her.

I love that verse 6 feels like they are truly stripped down to each other and now they’re getting true to each other. To me, they end up together and never gonna love again means they’ve found their match!
    Love your videos 🥰

I absolutely love how this song works as a love song or a heartbreak song (I've always leaned toward it being a heartbreak song, but I know a lot of people like to lean toward a love song). Probably my favorite song from Taylor.

I think it's a beautiful and clever song and one of Taylor's best. The only thing that would make it even better is if she took the lyrics," it takes one to know one" and later in the song switched these lyrics to "it takes one to no one." Taylor loves these types of play on words and I was surprised she didn't take the opportunity to play with the words in these lyrics. And I totally agree with you, Summersentiment; I love when songs start with the word, And. This has always been one of my favorite things about songs and one of the reasons I love the songs I love.

I prefer to think that the phrase “I never wanted love, just a fancy car” means that she didn’t want anything serious like love. She wanted something to show, nothing more. Her describing herself as a cowboy (a treacherous person, who doesn't care much about the meaning of things and people) and saying that she “never wanted love” proves my point of view, according to my interpretation. But I like your interpretation that the "fancy car" is a form of escape, where she would switch from one “fancy car” to another, but deep down she just doesn't want to be hurt. There are many interpretations and it highlights what an incredible lyricist Taylor Swift is!

The Gardens of Babylon is such a brilliant allusion. As they fall in love it is like one of the seven wonders of the world, but now she's locked it down, she's not sure it ever existed.

I love the progression of the song.. she had tricks up her sleeve all along just in case she needed to use them. I don't believe they are still together, I think she was hurt and will never dare love again. Love you analysis as always!! Requesting anything Lana Del Rey 💓

Forever is the sweetest con. With the boots beneath my bed (they put their guards down). So meaning Forever tricksters as they are and wanting fancy things is not forever because they finally locked it it. Now they don't want what they want anymore, they want to be forever together. JWith repetition in the end, I'm never gonna love again, it's coz he is her last love, she is currently in love and will never love anybody else again. ust my thoughts.

thank you for doing one of my absolute favorites from evermore. i like to imagine my ship in this scenario but please don't tell anyone 👀
i interpret the line "now you hang from my lips like the gardens of Babylon" as like, this other person also got themselves tricked by our protagonist. they're hanging on every beautiful things woven out of our protagonist's lips even if it's not necessarily the truth. which i think implies that these two people are equally good in what they do, because judging from the intensity of this dangerous game, of course they are.

    • @summersentiment

omg!! there's something about this song that makes it so easy to imagine couples, so many came to mind for me ngl...so i get it lol
i agree, i think the love interest also got tricked by the protagonist...it's like a web of trickery...literally like a movie! i love what you said about them "hanging" on what comes out of the protagonists mouth, on every word, that's a cool way to think about it!
as always, thank you so much for sharing your thoughts! 😊 💖
