    Relating mural to the line “Use my best colors for your portrait,” because painting a portrait of someone may equate to how one talks about that person to other people, glorifying them, making them out to be someone significantly more than they really are. In the same way, doesn’t this mean that they romanticize the other and the other’s qualities?
    In the piece, the speaker has been in love with this person they are in a relationship with.
    And if we connect this song to Gold Rush, where they don’t wanna be in love with someone that is desired by many other people because it makes them question their own worth out of competition, it makes sense that they feels unwanted given the other’s ambivalence. There’s a line in Gold Rush that goes “My mind turns your life into folklore,” which means they imagine what it is like to be in a relationship with the other- just another way to say that their love may have been built on fantasy, and the illusion shattered when they got to spend more time in proximity with the other.

      @summersentiment  3 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      yes, i love what you're saying here! it's another way they're glorifying the other person and putting them on a pedestal.
      i also really enjoy how you're thematically tying in 'gold rush' here as well!
      thanks for your comments! 😊

    She just wants to be a part of his page, but she even has to plead that he at least add her at the bottom of the page, as a footnote. Footnotes are usually also typed in a size smaller than the text in the body.

    I interpreted the footnote line differently. The information you put in your footnotes not directly relevant to the overall paper, but do provide further information. I saw the line as if she viewed him so highly whilst she could not even be part of the footnotes because of the extent she is irrelevant to his life story.

    • @summersentiment
      @summersentiment  3 ปีที่แล้ว +9

      i really love your interpretation! it shows that her spouse can't be bothered to include her in his life... in even the smallest way :/

    When you said barbed wire keeps trespassers out, I didn’t realize that there was an unspoken idea on how they’ve always just found each other to be on the other side of the fence, and that leading up to this point of having written the song, he used to be able to find ways to bridge those gaps and cushion the barbs enough for things and themselves to get across in the relationship. DAMN

    In the lyrics "you're so much older and wiser and I" I don't think she truly views herself as a kid, but rather that's how he makes her feel. I always got a sense that it was kind of a (slightly sarcastic) jab at him because he gives her the impression that he thinks he's smarter and more important than her. It also gives the connotation that she may not be independent (financially, societally) especially considering that she stays at home and doesn't seem to do much else. That then ties back to the notion of marriage at the time the book Rebecca was written, where it was common for a marriage to be about gender roles and fulfilling societal norms, and less about passion and devotion (which she longs for).

    • @summersentiment
      @summersentiment  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      i love your take on that lyric! (i always love a good sarcastic lyric tbh 💅 )
      i actually would prefer to interpret it like you are, as a subtle jab at her spouse. b/c that would allow the protagonist to have more power. i'd imagine her life circumstances (i also agree w/ what you said about the protagonist's lack of independence) dictate how much she can explicitly speak up for herself. perhaps more nuanced statements like "you're so much older and wiser" are her way of speaking out...she's expressing herself in ways that are not really "detectable" for her own safety
      thank you so much for your comment!! really enjoyed your perspective! 😊

    i'm so glad you posted another taylor swift analysis 💟 tolerate it for me is one of those songs that are like, the first time i heard it i was like, ok she's cute but i need more. then the second i heard it it was like getting hit by a ton of bricks, this song is amazing. and i love it even more ever since
    that part about the footnote and the byline, for me it's more like, footnote is a very small part of a book. it's written on the bottom of a page with smaller font size. some books don't even have a footnote. byline is also a very small part of an article. so i interpret it as the man is writing the story of his life (he's building a world like the lyric said) and the protagonist is begging to be a part of that world -like little mermaid-, to be included in it, or at the very least to be mentioned even if it's just in a footnote or a byline. but it always feels like even that small section is taking too much space or time for the man
    when you said that the protagonist is trying to read him like he's reading his book though 🤯😵⚰ and yes the tragedy of that situation. but also the eeriness that comes from that tragedy, realizing that all of this is just someone's internal monologue
    also when you finish folklore and evermore, would you maybe do a song ranking based on the best lyrics or stories in each album? only if you want to of course 🥰

      i really love what you're saying about the footnote/byline! your interpretation really shows how much her spouse doesn't care to include her in his life. not even in the smallest possible way :/

    “Where's that man who'd throw blankets over my barbed wire?” - This line parallels July 2020’s “invisible string”:
    “Something wrapped all of my past mistakes in barbed wire.”
    On “invisible string,” the barbed wire represents protection from her worst impulses and trauma. Here, she feels separated from the person who not only looked past all of her flaws and got through the walls she had built up, but also helped her look past those things herself.

    What I observed about taylor lyrics is that something they're just too literally and almost like a hint when see said Worlds she's literally mean it in the context of that story and if you have the right frame of reference it becomes really clear this song and evermore album I believe is about the relationship of William & Dolores from Westworld :) and yes she's actually a robot...

    for the footnotes part, the word "footnotes" is giving me an image of a book. SO I am kinda over-thinking her but it could mean her husband has written an autobiography (given / assumed that he is powerful in society - building other worlds, battle hero, etc). And the footnotes could literally mean footnotes in the autobiography. She is begging for more PERSONAL context and in-depth explanation.
    And the reason why the autobiography doesn't have footnotes in it could be because of the fact that her husband is careless or doesn't care about details, therefore didn't include?
    Also, byline - the writer of this autobiography - HIM.
    I am definitely over-thinking here but I think it's kinda interesting.

    I've never read the book but in the 2020 adaptation he is less ambivalent about her as he is focused completely on himself and the idea that he might go to prison for murder and so it is not because he doesn't love her it is because he cares more about himself and what's going on with him in his life then what is going on with her in her life and they're basically leading Separate Lives because he is letting someone who was close to his first wife separate them so she can isolate Rebecca and Gaslight and torture her with the ghost of his first wife

    This is about Calvin Harris. There are lyrical call backs to the ex in Gorgeous and her current boyfriend in Invisible String. Semantically and emotionally it's similar to Better Man, which was also speculated to be about Calvin Harris. Cardigan was inspired by her current boyfriend when they started in the summer of 2016, but with fictional element in it: in real life, he didn't cheat her, it's just very bad luck that he didn't wait for her and went out with other people when he saw she danced with Tom at the Met Gala.
