When you think about it, each robot Charlie has represents his situation,
Ambush being rusty, in need of a polish, shows him being a bit of an old fighter who is getting beaten down by chance.
Noisy Boy is him trying to reclaim the glory of the old days, but unfamiliar to the new ways of the ring
And Atom shows him passing off the reins to a new start, starting from the bottom and making their way to the top as the underdog.

The thing I noticed about Zeus is that he is designed so that all his power goes into his strength so he can end fights quickly, but it drains his power cells quickly. So, if something can last longer than one round, it's already a threat.
Atom is the perfect antithesis to Zeus, because he is designed TO TAKE HITS, meaning he is designed to last longer than other bots.

    • @Shiftry87
      @Shiftry87 11 หลายเดือนก่อน +41

Thats true but they also made it very obvious how downright terrible the bots that Zeus faced were from him just standing there and 1 punch man everything in hes way. I get that the whole thing was to show that human boxing can still beat the machine in the end but Atom is a Gen 2 robot. Your telling me Zeus dosent have any current gen sparring bots he fights that would be able to take hits just like Atom or even more. Designing a bot that dosent have enough power to last for the entire fight is like entering a race event when u know the fuel tank cant hold enough fuel. It was just a really dumb plot hole that honestly dident even need to be there and the movie itself even ignored it. Your running low on power and u switch to Turbo, i dont think so. Right away after Tak toke personal control of Zeus that power issue suddenly wasent there anymore and he was faster then ever. I like the movie but there are some major plot holes in this and the biggest is definatly Zeus size. Zeus is easily 2-3 times bigger and stronger then anything we se him fight, there are power and weight classes for a reson in sports and robot fighting appears to be the main sport in the world this is set in.

Actually one of the best movies ever I think, its so much better than it is on paper, there isnt even some super cool underlying theme they were going for unless you look for one (of which there is so much to analyse) but its just a father son movie about robot boxing and yet it hits so hard emotionally and has so much hype in the action, amazing music choices.

Real Steal is one of my all time favourite movies, ever. It was passed over as just another mushy family movie at the time. The Harry Potter films were wrapping up, the Marvel franchise movies were gaining steam. Unless you were a Hugh Jackman fan, it barely came up on so many peoples radar but it actually is so heartwarming and broke so many tiny little stereotypes. Max calls Charlie 'Dad' in the end with no fanfare no close up on the moment to emphasize it, it just happens and as the audience you just accept it because it was earned but we didn't feel like the film beat us over the head to show us 'see, see, he earned it'. The visuals are beautiful, the actors brought their A-Game, and the directing and set design was futuristic but not unbelievably so. It still felt warm and natural like it could exist in our world, like we regular people would be screaming at our TVs watching that fight too. It's so good and I'm not even a fan of boxing movies and it's up there in my top ten.

3:06 these girls are the directors kids. 42:03 thing about this scene is they left him in shadow mode so he was basically shadowing himself. It would be interesting to see what his processing was doing while he was looking at the mirror. The one thing I really like about this movie is how Hugh Jackman’s character grows during the movie. How at the end he finds his love of life again. One other thing by the end of the movie it looks like Adam is a real person. The way he listens to Max & Charlie. Especially when Max tells him to get up and Adam responds even though he doesn’t have the microphone. 1:04:43 this is like the ending of Rocky Balboa.

I really enjoy that the movie left the "sentience" of Atom up to interpretation. Did Max as a kid see something just through his imagination? In his need for a role model or friend? How much Atom shadows a person to repeat moves versus actually interpreting what he's seeing. It's all up to what you think. It doesn't go to the path of "kid discovers magical secret" but still had enough scenes, like the mirror scene, to have that question sitting in the back of your mind.

Damn I never realized all the parallels between Charlie and Atom. And how Max was projecting his want to have a dad onto Atom, and at the end he finally gets that shown by being picked up, similar to how he made Atom hold him earlier. Following up with the "your secrets safe" line. Also when they pointed out Max saying "I want you to fight for me" and in the end fight it was literal, he fought in place of Max, for him. I liked the movie already but it was way deeper than I first realized with all the little details. I thought the father/son story was sorta mediocre and wedged in to try to be heartfelt but it actually is done well. I was a kid when I first saw this movie too granted.

What I love about this film is that it is about a man who used to live in the glorious days as a boxer and is now struggling in a world of robot boxing. While trying to find his way he now has a son who he walked out on because he was afraid. His journey is about evolving from a man who was stuck in the glory days to becoming a father who would do anything for his son who he has always loved, but has struggled to show it and is trying to fix his mistakes. With Max stumbling across Atom, it gave Charlie a reason to bond with Max and that is the turning point in this father-son relationship as he starts to learn about trust. As they start winning fights that causes Charlie's bet using Ambush to catch up and when Max tells Ricky that Charlie is his father; it clicks in Charlies mind that he needs to keep Max safe. Since all Max wants is to be loved and wanted by his absent dad; Charlie finally gets it and the Zeus fight is the closure of this struggling father who realized that the missing piece in his life was his son Max.

This is definitely an underrated movie that, while a modest enough hit, was not big enough of a success to greenlight a sequel back then, which was a bummer. However, this movie has grown in popularity over the years. There was talk of a possible sequel and even the director talked about it last year about the possibility. Imagine Reel Steel 2 where robots fight MMA-style, LOL! I think there was an announcement recently about a Real Steel Disney+ series coming. I think the director commented on many writers who have pitched a lot of very good ideas, but nothing solid yet. I definitely see many Rocky parallels in this movie, especially Rocky 4. Speaking of MMA, Warrior would be a great sports movie to react to, if you have not already seen it. Hayley needs to be introduced a bunch of sports movies that also have lots of heart in it. I think she'd enjoy the Rocky movies. I never thought about it before, but now that you mentioned it, there really are not many fun Robot movies. Most "robot movies" are more about killer robots or, as you said, more existential type movies about the dangers of A.I. If you are still looking for more action movie ideas, here are some more I bet many others have probably already suggested since they are the usual big blockbuster-type action movies: Con-Air, The Rock, The Last Boy Scout, TimeCop, Face/Off, Johnny Mnemonic, Point Break (original, not the modern remake), Rambo franchise, Cobra, Eraser, Mile 22, Enemy of the State, Wanted, Extraction, Kate, Atomic Blonde, The Raid 1 & 2, Commando, Tango & Cash, Cliffhanger, Double Impact, Bad Boys franchise, Armageddon, Transformers franchise, The Fast & Furious franchise, Sabotage (Schwarzenegger), Lionheart, True Lies, The Running Man, Lock Up, The Specialist. LOL, I could go on and on and on and I already have for too long...

Is Gamma the robot Statue they have in front of the arena, or is Gammas design never shown? Its kinda sad that Atom was left to waste away in the junkyard, since he looked like he was in good condition, when Gamma is probably in a WRB hall of fame room along with other WRB champions. Or maybe, Gamma is also in the junkyard as well since it probably fought until it was destroyed, and they didnt bother to repair it.

This movie's appeal is all about it being a character piece. Charlie's character, down on his luck, desperate for the money and trying to get back to the big leagues, thanking that's what is most important in his life. Max's character, searching for a connection with someone, because his aunt who claims she wants custody, is ok with going away for a month and leaving this kid who just lost his mom with the dad he has never known. The robot fights are just the spectacle, the vehicle to getting these two characters to open up to one another, find a way to bond, to connect, to be a family. What makes you so emotional about the fight is that you know how much that last fight means to both of them. It's Max proving to Charlie that he believes in him, something no one has done in a long time. And it's Charlie proving to Max what lengths he will go to fight for his kid, to do the thing that will make him happy, prove to him that his dad DOES care about him. Charlie didn't think he was worthy to be a dad to his kid because he split when Max was still little, but now he knows it isn't too late.
I loved this movie and it's criminal it wasn't a blockbuster hit.

When Charlie 'sells' his kid then the lil guy wants to go on the road with his Dad, I clearly recall thinking 'here we go, JUST when they start to like one another the money is revealed at the end of the 2nd act to bust them up again'. Then seconds later, Max asks how much money Charlie got and Charlie owns up to it straight away. That was the point I went "okay movie, you're not just painting by numbers here'. I like this one. Fun Fact: The film is a loose adaptation of the short story "Steel" by Richard Matheson. The only thing the film and the story have is the concept of robot boxing and a human "fighting" a robot. The story was one of the many short stories of Richard Matheson that got adapted into episodes of the classic TV series The Twilight Zone. Matheson is well known for several of his novels, being most recognized for Somewhere in Time and I Am Legend. Matheson's final writing work was the TV movie Duel (1971), which was based on a short story he written, and the TV movie was directed by a newcomer director named Steven Spielberg. Spielberg served as a producer of this film.

I nearly always have seen already what you guys react to, but it's interesting watching something new because it's like a speed edit. With great editing it's not only a feeling of watching it with friends, but also a time saving way of getting most of the movie and impact of feels cut down. Thank you for this reaction. I was an extra on this film. We did most of our scenes in downtown Detroit in 2010. Crash Palace was filmed in a very dirty old auto factory. It was very hot, and the makeup department would come around periodically to reapply grease to our skin to make us even more sweaty and filthy. Cheering for long hot days on end was challenging, but Director Shawn Levy made us enjoy coming to work each day and giving 150%. I also worked on the final battle with Zeus. I remember how touching that bond between Hugh and Dakota felt even knowing they were acting. I actually teared up a bit during that scene. When you work on a project for days or weeks on end, you start to feel like the fantasy of film is your temporary reality. I’m so glad it is being well received all of these year later!
