"I keep feeling smaller and smaller". Those words, those lyrics right there! There are times that everyone is feeling a little bit "smaller". I think a lot of people can relate to that. And to hear about it in the lyrics of such a beautiful song is what makes you realise how in many situtations you may feel afraid, frigile, lonely. It's heartbreaking... but beautiful too!
I always interpreted it as how humbled he feels to have this girl in his life. Like she overwhelms him at times and he feels “smaller” because he realizes how much he needs her, how much he relies on her. The other people around him though say that he looks taller - I think this represents how a healthy relationship helps you to grow as a person.
I lost my partner almost 3 years ago, and in the deepest depth of my grief I'd repeat the line, "I am good, I am grounded" to myself over and over, this song reminds me so much of her.

I am dating a black woman who is ten years my senior right now (she is 43 and I am 33) and while we share a common love of R&B as well as Soul, we have been introducing each other to our respective cultures traditional music. I recently burned her an album and I put this song as the first track, because it is beyond beautiful and it is honestly how I feel on the days we are not together. I explained to her that Country & Bluegrass are the white equivalent of Soul & R&B and she loved it.
A question: What do you get out of this song? This may be one of the most poignant songs for me in regards to relationships and every time I watch this, I am filled with both love for my wife and an immense amount of shame that I do not give, nor show, her enough love. I love this song so much! The first time I've heard just the first few seconds of it I already thought it was beautiful and then Matt starts singing with the voice of an angel and I knew this was my new favourite song. I have since then listened to it like a million times and I still love it. Adding this absolutely stunning video, it is the most beautiful thing I've ever seen/heard!

I've been listeting to this song all day long. I don't know why but I love it so much. It gives me goosebumps and kind of make my mind travel in time. I'm in love with this song. It's perfect. So is the video.
Am I the only one who believes that The National has not a single BAD song? Or is it that they're the best band ever. Either way, this song made my heart go in all directions, nearly cried halfway through. #emotions #ineedmygirl
This song reminds me of my parents. They married when they were 16 and are still married 19 years later. They breathe for each other and are still so much like like love struck teenagers who bicker and chase each other around the house. Love lasts forever.
To everyone that's criticizing the video as 'boring' and 'uninspiring': be creative. I don't know how can you not be creative if you're a The National fan, and listen to the lyrics and having them in your head. (I feel like I'm driving when I'm listening to Conversation 16 i.e.). They way the figures blend into each other and the lighting and their expressions (not one of them smiled. Maybe the girls near the end did.) they mostly voice affection (or just closeness?) through touch and movement. Be creative and be open to it. I don't know what you look for in videos, but I look for the little details. The way when they hang, one woman slides her hand down her partners back, then up again. How the elderly couple seems happy, peaceful, content. Just open up and don't expect a plot. Lemme rephrase: don't expect. This is the only video I've really liked from the National and to me the best one. (I just miss it wasn't more diverse - races, perhaps a gay couple in a big shot? But if it wants to convey the ballroom dance tone, it got that alright.)
***** Dude, it's ok to be vulnerable, you don't have to shove your overwhelming masculinity down our throats, if you can't restrain yourself go back to shooting stuff, but please, I beg of you, leave others alone. Do you ever look in the mirror and realize you're a bully?
Perhaps it's not about missing someone in particular in this life or the next. Is it not rather about the eternal void that transcends time and the universe?
@@Malumbrus can’t believe you responded, we got back together for awhile and life happens you know. I told myself that I’ll only live once and that I should go for her even if she’ll be gone, who knows we could do long distance. She’s a year older too but I figure I got a shot. And about that girl of yours, try to be a friend, supporting and maybe (hopefully) she’ll realize just how good you were/ will be in the future. Good luck brother, being in the dark can only last for so long eh? Love from Calgary- Canada.
@@eddie0415 Wow you're young haha. I wouldn't worry too much about girls at your age, they'll come and they'll go. Just have fun. Eventually you'll find the one. If you like that girl then go for it. It may not work out in the end especially considering the situation but at least you can have her for a little while. The woman I'm talking about is my wife. To me she is the one and somehow I lost sight of that. Right now I'm just trying to live my life and be as good to her as I can. You're right, maybe she will see the good in me and come back. The National is one one my favorite bands of all time.. they have a lot of amazing songs dear to my heart but this in my favorite songs of all time out of any interpreters.
These are some of the thoughts and feelings that rush to the forefront once you have the courage and intellectual honesty to admit that you're fortunate enough NOT to be the hero or central actor in your own life story. When all of your recollections in looking back on your life start with "Remember when...?" addressed to this special person, you're truly fortunate, indeed. Love creates a space where all three components of time (past, present, and future) are all simultaneously in play. This special person is the repository of all of your hopes and fears, the springboard at your feet and wind at your back when you don't feel like you have either the courage or the strength to press forward, the one who cannot run to you fast enough in your time of need. True comfort comes when you realize that you also hold the same standing in the other person's life, as well. The visual imagery of the video captures this last sentiment, at least in my view, rather nicely. Very nicely done.
My Granny just passed of lung cancer a few months ago. Sitting next to her in hospice on what would be her death bed, I don't need to explain that torment. If you've lived it you know. The last time I saw her I put my head in the nook of her shoulder and sobbed while she stroked my hair and said I would always be her girl. Broke me. Miss her so so much. She was my rock. She was love. She was home.
First time i listened it in NETFLIX series YOU and only one line i listened i need my girl, it touched my blood veins. And after one year I'm still in love with this.
I need my guy. It never goes away. I am good and I am grounded.. we all have someone who is our everything. They unlock everything inside us, in a way no one else can even see.
This song is unlike every other in it's category. It's not an individual story of one person trying to impress another for love, it's a celebration of love itself. A love story for all people, and it's utterly heartwarming. No complex story of relationships or 'love at first sight' lyrics, just pure emotion. I don't want to make stupid puns, but this song may very well be a love letter to love itself.
I heard this song on a bus from Scotland to London, on a BBC Radio show. the presenter explained that they had a segment involving a "changing track", where you can ask them to tell a story from your life and play your chosen song that relates to your story. someone told a very sweet story and then they played this song. i was sitting beside my boyfriend and waiting for the bus to start, and i recognized the band as the national, but i couldn't place the song. I'm glad I found it. It's too sweet.
This song just tears something up inside of me when I listen to it. It makes me think about how, one day, my wife may just leave me or die. I can only imagine being ... broken.
I am good, I am grounded
Davy says that I look taller
I can’t get my head around it
I keep feeling smaller and smaller
I need my girl
I need my girl
Remember when you lost your shit and
Drove the car into the garden
You got out and said I’m sorry
To the vines and no one saw it
I need my girl
I need my girl
I’m under the gun again
I know I was the 45% of then
I know I was a lot of things
But I am good, I am grounded
Davy says that I look taller
I can’t get my head around it
I keep feeling smaller and smaller
I need my girl
I need my girl
There’s some things that I should never
Laugh about in front of family
I’ll try to call you from the party
It’s full of punks and cannonballers
I need my girl
I need my girl
I’m under the gun again
I know I was the 45% of then
I know I was a lot of things
But I am good and I am grounded

It makes me think of my brother who is looking for his girl. Hope he finds her
1 month ago i was working for the Kensho hotel in mykonos, GR. One day i was informed room 203 departed the hotel so i went to check the room. i got in and the tv was open in a music channel was playing this song so loud!!! i recorded the song and memorized the moment. i dont know why, beautiful moment.
pretty much everything the national does is pure beauty , so real , so great .great writing , great voice, great band ........always gets to my emotions , always , which is good for us ..... love them a lot, should have many many awards !!!??
Heard this hidden gem this morning on my way to work.
Didn't know, this masterpiece was existing. ❤
My grandmother just passed away and my granddad misses her so much...the guys in classical suits remind me of him...and sort of make me feel his pain
This is one of those songs that comes along once in a while, and just makes you...stop....and listen. A timeless modern classic that future generations when looking back will consider it among other great tracks.
Hi❤
Whoo needs love when you can listen to such great music and cry your eyes out.
dumbs?
boo fucking hoo
just kiddin'...
Odd comments.

I love this song so much! The first time I've heard just the first few seconds of it I already thought it was beautiful and then
Matt starts singing with the voice of an angel and I knew this was my new favourite song. I have since then listened to it
like a million times and I still love it. Adding this absolutely stunning video, it is the most beautiful thing I've ever seen/heard!
This song reminds me so much of my Dad since my Mom passed away 3 years ago. they were happily married for 45 years
How's your dad? 💔 I'm sorry for your loss.
i am so happy the mindy project brought me to this song. it is hauntingly beautiful. I will be downloading this album immediately!
I Thouqht I Was The Only One Brouqht Here By The Mindy Project.!
RockinBlackBarbie i heard it when she broke up with the boyfriend she went to Haiti with and I rushed to my laptop to find which song it was and boy did i not regret it . i own alll of their albums now! They are absolutely amazing!
Me too, heard it on mindy project but i tried to look up after watching entourage movie, the movie sucks but at least it lead me here.. One of the most beautiful song ive ever heard!
+Daphnee Nazon Make sure to grab all their other albums too!
Spencer Vik i got all of their albums after i listened to this song last year!
I have just discovered them. Isn't that crazy?? How could I not know them earlier????
This song reminds me of my parents. They married when they were 16 and are still married 19 years later. They breathe for each other and are still so much like like love struck teenagers who bicker and chase each other around the house.
Love lasts forever.
The most beautiful comment! I wish your parents stay together forever!
what?? marry at 16?
+Pepinus In Scotland its legal...
Cavort And Co. Still, that's way too young
+Pepinus - Not too young if they're soulmates.
"I can't wrap my head around it...I keep feeling smaller and smaller"
Gorgeous, and very sad
Hello❤
What a beautiful song, The cleaning lady got me so emotional with this song. Now I have to listen to the whole "Trouble will find me" album 😋
I agree that's how I heard about this song!
I am here because the cleaning lady 😆
😅😅 same here
Tuko wengi 🤣😂
Here from cleaning 🧹 lady.....amazing song!!!!👌👌🙌🙌🙌🙌
But if it wants to convey the ballroom dance tone, it got that alright.)
dont have a girl... but makes me remember those days i did and a hug would melt me and make everything better
***** do u ever look at ur comments and feel better about urself?
***** what did I just witness? focus on the music fellas! :-P
***** your an idiot
***** Dude, it's ok to be vulnerable, you don't have to shove your overwhelming masculinity down our throats, if you can't restrain yourself go back to shooting stuff, but please, I beg of you, leave others alone. Do you ever look in the mirror and realize you're a bully?
*****
the empty can rattles the most
you are living a sad existence
worst way to miss someone is to have them sitting
right next to you and knowing
you can never have them.
damn true, know that feel
+Victor Holmberg understand, yeah.
I managed to overcome such situation...I said to that girl , who is my wife now , that i love her!!!
I wish you to do the same!!!
Shit, yeah I know the feeling, dealing with it right now.
+Bflow :'(
It hits differently.... It makes u sad and also happy at the same time
It hits differently... It makes someone happy and sad at the same time
This song is a heart tugger. Plus the video is simple & beautiful.
hi
Father Daughter dance at my wedding---- can't wait
@@katierae22222 I hope it’s magical and everything you dreamt it’ll can be
Here thanks to The Cleaning Lady....what a hauntingly beautiful song omg! Forever connected now to Arman & Thony!
Same...
This song is too beautiful! I want to cry and I don't know why!!!
Perhaps it's not about missing someone in particular in this life or the next. Is it not rather about the eternal void that transcends time and the universe?
What I couldn't put in words... Thank you
Nickolay Nickolov so deep I nearly drowned
lol no, not everything is existential.
first thing to make me cry in such a long time that I begged myself not to stop. it was good to finally feel something
God I miss her, hopefully I’ll get her back. God please, please give me one more chance. She’s everything to me.
Comment is two years old.. Did things work out?
@@Malumbrus can’t believe you responded, we got back together for awhile and life happens you know. I still see her around sometimes, maybe we’ll try it one more time but there’s this other girl that I’m now into. I have some choices to make, I will say that I was going through a dark time at that point in my life.
@@eddie0415 I hear ya. I'm there right now. Spent the day with her yesterday. She has a new boyfriend but she says she is confused and isn't sure if she wants to be with him or go back to me. But right now she hasn't come back to me.
@@Malumbrus hey man I know the feeling sucks. Two years ago I was what 15, unsure of everything. I’m in a bit of a dilema myself as I like this one exchange student who’s going back to Europe at the end of the semester. I want her so bad, but I’m not sure if it’ll work.
Thanks for the kind words of support. From Ontario, Canada!
this song, magic
Hi❤
Gorgeous song, and I love that the video ends just as it begins. Every time I hit replay I feel like I’m starting up a music box with a ballerina dancer inside.
I legit cannot stop listening to this
One of the best music videos ever. Genius in its simplicity. Wonderful execution. Thanks to all of the Players for their contributions. Big love from Canada. ❤
I don't have an ex girlfriend but listening to this song makes me miss her
+Isabella Peruzzolo you dont need one to miss her...
+ArtistState Damn, that's deep.. How does one become so wise?
+Davit Bun By not having one... It's a little depressing, but I feel I was at my wisest pre-chick.
+neemguy81 It's not depressing. Instead, it's only from a different perspective. Thanks for the insight and sharing. I sympathize for you sir.
+neemguy81 Women.. am I right?
This was our wedding song. We still dance to it to this day. Thank you!
this makes me cry...
Entourage Movie anyone? what an ending to a show that was most of my teenage
I agree great song used in great film
Jcurvs99 Holy shit THATS where I know this from
That was some powerful shit...Despite Ari being fired and Hyde almost going up in flames the boys still remained grounded by their blind loyalty and friendship.
+Jcurvs99 in the middle of making a sequel to it brotha!
The National is one one my favorite bands of all time.. they have a lot of amazing songs dear to my heart but this in my favorite songs of all time out of any interpreters.
God, I just want to hear the beat by it’s self as well. It’s so beautiful
Heard this song on the show the cleaning lady. Love this song now
God I love this song, it’s soul crushingly
Beautiful
Probably one of the most beautiful songs I've heard all year. Bravo
had this on repeat all day, absolutely beautiful.
both the video and the song
I keep feeling smaller and smaller.
I'm already a short girl, I'll probably disappear.
dont disappear😂😊😊
No worries, you won't. National music lovers never disappear :>0
He said "Delores, I live in fear
My love for you is so overpowering
I'm afraid that I will disappear"
Slip slidin' away
I was here to cry but u made me laugh. Thanks 😁
you just made my day hahahh thanks
The serie YOU brought me here
Love love this song... beautifully sad.
This is the song that made me fall in love with The National ❤️ I got goosebumps every single time
I love this song. When I'm sad and I ride my Harley, I listen to this song over and over and over.
That’s so sweet! It brings the sweetest of melody to my soul🥰
When did you fell in love?
Wow, just discovered this band! Can't believe I've never heard of them! So lucky to now be listening to their music
2022 I just discovered The National, and I have to say What a sound!
Just beautiful music ♥️
I am better, I just discovered 11.2023 🤫
Awe so beautiful
Great, natural, soothing voice and beautiful lyrics. Kudos. Favorited.
Found out about this song because I was heartbroken
It’s a shame how lonely someone can get
This might be the most beautiful music video I've ever seen. So simple but incredibly brilliant.
“I keep feeling smaller...” this makes me ache for a love I’ll never have. Right person, never the right time.
This song is perfect. And one if my favorites ever.
First time i listened it in NETFLIX series YOU and only one line i listened i need my girl, it touched my blood veins. And after one year I'm still in love with this.
I was looking for a comment about the series
The Cleaning Lady, thank you for making me realize there's such a beautiful song out there! 🙌🏾🙌🏾KE 🇰🇪🇰🇪
The series brought me here too😊😊
Powerful! Reminds me of a dear friend I lost to suicide go bless her heart RIP Kate ❤️
Just got told by a girl I really like that she doesn't feel the same way. Music is one thing that will always be there to put a smile on your face
I need my guy. It never goes away. I am good and I am grounded.. we all have someone who is our everything. They unlock everything inside us, in a way no one else can even see.
YOU brought me here. No regret! Great ending of Season 1
The Mindy Project brought me here. So in love with this song.
I love this song, this is so comforting and soothing for me
I love this song!
This song just tears something up inside of me when I listen to it. It makes me think about how, one day, my wife may just leave me or die. I can only imagine being ... broken.
Never heard it before until I watched The cleaning lady.
This band is out of this world!!!
What an amazing song and video! It makes me cry a lot. This song was my today's soundtrack. A day full of pain and uncertainty.
