Exactly it’s a big difference doing trial and error changing multiple variables and learning what does and doesn’t work. Then honing it down to the perfect hold and action. Versus hey hold it like this and do that at this specific moment. Honestly for a magician like Brian taking 10 minutes to key in on that after being told everything is kinda long. I mean he already has much more skill and dexterity in slight of hand movements with plenty of practice manipulating cards and coins you would really think he should be able to do it by after third try.

Rick is the best! He came to my school over ten years ago when I was in middle school as a reward for one of those fundraisers. I participated in the fundraiser just to see him. I then annoyed my family by throwing cards all over the house like for a year after that 😂

I have watched this show forever it’s so good
This is by far the easiest trick I've learned and also one of the most impressive. I picked up a coin while watching this and did it several times in a row. There are some minor things to improve on such as getting the wobble to look more like a flip and preventing an actual flip from occurring but it's still good enough to impress the laymen 9/10 times. I've loved this show since I was a kid and will occassionally go some time without watching but whenever I come back you never disappoint. Keep it up Brushwood, you're a legend and a funny magician which is rare.

Only time I’ve ever seen you lose your cool was that time Jason shot that blow dart right by your head and you didn’t even have on any glasses. For one slit second I thought you was really gonna beat his ass hahaha. We joke and kid but that was very serious you could have lost an eye. People kept insisting to slap it on my wrist all the time and call it in the air. this provided an issue. So here is how i dealt with the "call it in the air & must-slap issue":
Start with heads up, flip it, catch it the normal way (coin from above, hand below), then slap it on your wrist. ta-dah; tails up.
Start with heads up, flip it, catch it in the air from top to bottom (hand above your coin), slap it on your wrist, ta-dah; heads up.
This is my favourite thing to do now. I'm getting a job as a professional coin flipper.

That requires some quick reflexes and quite some practice I guess. Other than that, who is gonna call you out for "not catching the coin the same way every time". :D
A trick I figured out in highschool to slap a heads up coin onto my wrist and keep it heads up works here really well. It's hard to describe, but during the slap onto the wrist if you pull your hand away and above the coin and slap down it doesn't flip at all because you're stealing the momentum to actually turn it. So you fake a heads up flip and have them call it in the air, if they ask for a tails you actually flip the coin onto your wrist. If they want a heads, do the twist trick to keep it heads up as you slap it onto your wrist.
If you have been practicing this truck for hours, all told, spread out over a couple of months. One say it just clicked and the floodgates flew open. I can flip it fast, slow (for demonstrations of the principle), high, low. And today I hit upon the overhand catch. I LOVE THIS TRICK! It’s so science-y.
My biggest problem is that every time I flip a coin I can't catch it.

Okay, I don't normally comment on videos, but my god this video is amazing! not only is the trick great (I'm doing it with a 50p coin), the presenters are great together, but also the ending with the close-ups is really well done. In lots of magic DVDs, they explain a trick and don't bother showing close-ups of the moves and so it ends up with a ton of guesswork or me giving up. I got 7 heads in a row within about 5 mins of practicing, so thanks, Brian and Rick.

That's awesome! Funny thing is, the first 12-15 times I tried it, it kept landing on the opposite side. I was holding heads up and no matter how I caught it, it was always tails. In just a few minutes I've gotten to where I can do it a good 9/10 times so I need some more practice.

Learned this trick years ago, but Rick pulls it off waaay smoother than I ever could. I could fool people occasionally in the right light, but watching him do that, I'd never think he was doing anything but flipping that coin.

Brian your comment was spot on. I'm fool myself doing this too. Once I got the technique I honestly couldn't tell if it was flipping, but it always came up the way I planned.
Awesome video, I tried it and it started working for me after only a few minutes of practice. I Went for all heads up while practicing, and for forcing a tails I would do the same thing forcing a heads up but I would snatch it out of the air with my hand palm down so that when I turned my hand over for the reveal it would be tails. It works nicely as long as the call for heads/tails is done early enough for you to react with the correct catch.

I love this. Dead simple, super easy, but it still has that amazing awe effect. I couldn't believe it was gonna be as easy as it was. Personally I like to use a half dollar coin because it's weirder and makes the coin feel more special, however I think smaller coins look more fair. But this is dead simple and looks great.

A really cool addition to this trick I've found is to catch the coin just in your open palm - don't close your fist around it. Really visually shocking when it just lands dead in your hand exactly as you predict - and there's no room to doubt that you potentially turned it over in your hand in the brief moment before you reveal!
This is so simple, I literally figured it out as they were gearing up to actually explain it.

That was ridiculously simple to learn, I've only tried it for five minutes and I'm at a 80 percent success rate!
EDIT: after a few more tries it looks like holding the coin vertically helps a lot. Also choosing a large yet light coin (eg. 50p) makes it much more believable

This effect is INSANE. I was able to replicate it on my 2nd try (I think - as Brian says, you fool yourself with this effect)
The craziest part of the video though is that it still almost looks like a flip in slow motion! I wonder if you could incorporate that into the routine, inviting a bystander to shoot slow-mo on their phone to "prove" that it's not sleight of hand or a trick flip.
This makes the Two Face plot line in The Dark Knight very interesting 🤔

I have a tip for those trying to learn this. Try this with a bigger coing, the bigger, the better. At least I find it easier when the coin is heavier. So if you have some kind of commemorative coin or something I recommend practicing with those, then move on to regular coins once you master it.

Check it out: I just accidentally discovered an even better way to control the outcome when the "coinflip" is called in the air, and this method doesn't require you to suddenly start using the "slap your wrist" thing to switch from heads to tails. It's super easy too. I literally did it on accident lol.
Catch the coin with a closed hand every time, no matter what the results, however, if you catch the coin on your _fingers_ and especially closer to your fingertips, and then close your hand around it, that action of closing your hand will flip the quarter over and leave it 180° from whichever position you flipped/caught it as.
Alternatively, if you catch the quarter on your _palm_ and and close your hand, then there is no flip, and the result will be whichever orientation you flipped/caught the coin as.
•Catch the coin in a closed hand every time.
•If you want to reveal the coin in the orientation you flipped/caught it as, then _catch the quarter on your palm_ and close your fingers around it (no flip, it stays in original orientation.)
•If you want to reveal it in the opposite orientation from how you flipped/caught it, then _catch the quarter on your fingers, toward fingertips_ and by closing your hand you will be flipping the coin over automatically, non-suspiciously, apparently identically to not flipping the coin over.
This way, all your catches and reveals look absolutely identical, and people won't ask why you sometimes reveal it as you caught it and sometimes flip it on your wrist after you caught it.
This gives the added bonus of being able to keep your hand closed and draw out "the moment" for added impact. But mainly, I feel like this just makes the effect look so much more seamless and unquestionable.
I wonder what FIFA will do now. ;-)

Hey Brian, first off, flipping amazing. Just a quick suggestion. When heads is chosen and lands heads in your right hand I would catch in my hand, close my hand which puts the tails face up then smack your hand on the back of your left hand revealing heads. By doing it this way, it looks consistent when they select tails. Instead of catching when heads is picked and opening your hand. Hopefully you know what I mean. Thanks again.

How do you get the coin to fly up then come down? Whenever I do it the coin flys off somewhere unpredictable so it seems like I am throwing it at the wall rather than up in the air.

And this damn trick does it, first try I thought I messed it up and really flipped it, nope came up tails like it should have. The only times it doesn't are when I don't catch it.
I accidentally learned this when I was like 10 and became obsessed... I had even forgot about it
Yay I can do it! Although 1 in 10 times it flies of backwards over my shoulder. Haha
I'm aware this is old, but at one point I spent a lot of time flipping quarters, nickels, and pennies(didn't feel like flipping dimes because they're tiny and my hands are on the larger side) and got to a point that I could control the results with a high degree of accuracy with actual flips. From what I can tell, it's a similar sort of skill as practicing flipping knives(just a lot safer to practice and get good at). Also, when I got the knack I was able to control whether it kept the face that was on top or switched to the face that was on bottom, so all I had to do was know my starting state and my desired result and was able to get the results I wanted. And if someone wanted me to do the calling in the air and/or the slap on wrist reveal consistently, I just changed where I caught it. Since I knew what the result would be if I revealed it, then I could just catch it on my fingers if I needed to flip it or on my palm if I didn't.
