  • A posterior cervical laminectomy and fusion is a procedure used to decompress and stabilize the cervical spine. This relieves pain, weakness and numbness caused by narrowing of the spinal canal, a condition called spinal stenosis. Your surgeon will make an incision on the back of your neck. The laminae of the affected vertebrate will be exposed. The spinous processes and laminae will be removed from the affected vertebrae to relieve the pressure on your spinal cord and nerves.

wow...what is the risk of injury to the spinal cord now that the spinous processes are absent?

I had this procedure Oct 10 2023. After the pain from the operation and muscle cutting subsided I thought I could drive after 2 weeks. Big mistake. The vertebrae had not yet fused so I paid for that for days afterward. At 10 weeks I was able to drive. The biggest issue is safety. Turning the head to clear L and R sides is difficult/painful. I learned to lift up and pivot at the waist before attempting to look. You should wait and listen to your body. My biggest concern is they pinned one side closer together than the other side. So now I have hot, burning with shooting pain from that area of the neck. They prescribed Cyclobenzeprene which imo, is the worst thing for someone with a pinched spinal cord. It's a CNS suppressant so my sensation, coordination, balance etc. was rolled back to worse than what it was before the operation!! I use Aspercream w/ 4% Lidocane topical instead. It helps. I still keep the neck collar since holding the head up wears on the muscles. After 10 hr.s I must lay down or get muscle spasms. So when I return to work next week I am bringing it with for the commute home. After 11+ hr.s vertical there's no way I can commute without risking injury, crash, etc. so the collar goes on to reduce neck muscle strain and spasms.
