Somebody mentioned Nightmare on Elm Street 4 switching from Kristen to Alice (which is certainly valid) but the original Nightmare on Elm Street did initially make it look like Tina was going to be the protagonist, not Nancy.

@@Simplywogwog I got all three in a DVD box one Christmas and then me and my husband watched them in a row. That's how I learned he does have one thing that makes his stomach turn. "Pour out a little of grandma."
I literally watched Martyrs for the first time a few days ago, and I do believe the film goes downhill in the second half. As for Alien, it was genuinely shocking seeing Captain Dallas bite the bullet. His character had hero written all over him.
Evil Dead 2013 is another good example. At first we are led to believe that David is the main protagonist since he's presented as the "Ash character" of the movie. Then the movie switches around and turns the focus onto Mia who had been possessed the first half of the movie.
Um, Ripley is literally third in command on the Nostromo. She says to Ash after the failed attempt to remove the facehugger that when Dallas and Kane are off the ship, she's in charge.
Maniac Cop has a major switch. Tom Atkins' character is set up to be the hero but gets killed 2/3 of the way through before Bruce Campbell becomes the hero.

Nightmare on elm street 4, dream master...unfortunately i didnt get to experience the reactions in real time (we had the bootleg vhs though!) But from what ive read over the years was the abrupt change from kristen to alice, and how easy the DW got disposed turned a good portion of people off. .plus the different actress playing kristen. Personally DM might be my fave Nightmare cause it oozes 80s, and very action movie like.
Ripley, as a Warrant Officer, was technically third in the chain of command after Dallas, the CO, and Kane, the XO. Ash overrode her following quarantine protocol, which it is possible he could do in the case of a medical emergency, which it was.
There's a movie I watched with my wife while I was undergoing treatment for cancer that would be perfect for this list, unfortunately I can't remember it's name. The short synopsis is it starts with a group of college friends (mostly girls, maybe 1 guy?) having fun in the woods when they come across a house. Having nothing better to do they break into it, like you do. I'm hazy on specifics (heavy pain meds will do that to you) but they eventually release someone from a Labyrinth where he was hunting a Minotaur. From then on (roughly 1/2 way) he is the main character as the movie becomes exclusively focused on his quest. It sounds way worse than I remember it being. I saw it around 2010-2014 and it had a strong Indie vibe. I'd love it if someone else saw this and could cough up a name.
Can't leave link here but Google "reddit Can't remember horror movie that had a minotaur near the ending" There's a discussion there. Hey maybe this was you asking that question 😊
Your description made me search for Minotaur movies. I found "Dave Made A Maze", which is not quite the same movie (2017, nobody breaking in) but looks indie & interesting, so thanks for that.
Identity is one of my favorite movies. I was diagnosed in 2002 with DID so I understand what he went through, plus I got to meet Pruitt Taylor Vince a couple of years ago and what a total sweetheart!
Barbarian never switched it's protagonist. It was always Tess. The others were all potential villains, never any question of them being something else.
Bringing up how rare the double-switch is in #5 after it already happened in #10 & #9 (given that for 9, it switches from the first protagonist, to the second, then to the pair of them) seems kind of silly.
I completely disagree with From Dusk til Dawn. Seth is the protagonist from start til end. There's a difference between being the "protagonist" and being a "good guy" or even "hero".
Your writers need to let the whole 'leaves her to die' thing from 28 weeks later go. SHE made stupid decisions and there really was nothing he could do for her at the time, beside die himself.
the first Feast was great. but it wasn’t halfway when it switched. it was like 10 minutes after we meet Hero. And it really wasn’t Tuffy, it was more Bozo who became the main character. And Identity SUCKED! You waste how long being invested in the plot and characters then after the twist, it was all for nothing. What a waste of time!
Indeed, how could anyone know? If only there was media from that time period still around, or even people that were alive back then that consumed that media that are currently alive to talk to. Alas, since that period is lost in time to us all, neither we nor anyone at WhatCulture can ever know what women protagonists were like in the 70s.
@@Ceares You think you're smart, but you don't even grasp what I said. Indeed, LOOK at the media of the 70's and be informed by reality, instead of what your social engineers instruct you to believe. Ellen Ripley is far from the first heroine. Your trained preconceptions actually insult all of the strong, competent and capable women who came before her.
Your comment is dumb. Even in those they probably romanticized the way society was in the 70s. And often follow the narrative needed to the story they want to tell.
Everybody ended-up being “somewhat,” the “protagonist” in “Barbarian,” “including that mother thang,” & just when it seemed lyke the “hero,” & the “final-girl,” were gonna be “different protagonists”… …everyone else dies/off, leaving the last “final girl” standing, the hero after all! #TheDamselinDistressShouldntBeGenderBiasAgainstLadyProtagonistsFemaleSuperHerosGirlPowerAndOrFinalGirls
Not switching the narration from Ellie to another WhatCulture presenter halfway through this video was a missed opportunity
Why? As a joke or are you being bitchy? Honest question. It's impossible to tell from your words.
That woulda been brilliant
This is the 4th similar video, people can’t be this slow.
😂😂😂
Excuse me - Ripley is NOT the SOLE survivor of the Nostromo. You put respect on Jonesy’s name! 🐈
Damn right! I was just about to mention that but I was 4 days too late!
Somebody mentioned Nightmare on Elm Street 4 switching from Kristen to Alice (which is certainly valid) but the original Nightmare on Elm Street did initially make it look like Tina was going to be the protagonist, not Nancy.
I remember critics piling on Identity back then. I thought it was a solid thriller and was really confused what the problem with the movie was.
0:40 Feast

4:54 From Dusk Till Dawn

Thx🙋🏾♀️🎃🙋🏾♀️
I was totally expecting that Psycho would be in this video, but I guess that twist is pretty well-known at this point.
Thank you.
Feast is a gem.
It truly is.
Saw first Feast and had to immediately buy the next two movies. Greatest yet also worst mistake ever 😂
it is. just don't ruin it by watching sequels.
@@biljam972 how many were their?

Typically that means "it lowered in quality"

I think Frailty should be on the list its really underrated and the flip is crazy 🤯
Um, Ripley is literally third in command on the Nostromo. She says to Ash after the failed attempt to remove the facehugger that when Dallas and Kane are off the ship, she's in charge.
Yes, I was surprised she was in the list, everyone should know that!
Yeah whoever did the research and writing for this script makes a ton of mistakes. Like calling DID someone's "Imagination"
Maniac Cop has a major switch. Tom Atkins' character is set up to be the hero but gets killed 2/3 of the way through before Bruce Campbell becomes the hero.
Never heard of I Came By. Glad to see something new listed, I'm adding it to my watch list.
A little surprised Psycho isn't on this list.

Seeing Feast on this list warms my heart.
Why isn’t Psycho on this list?
I was thinking the same thing
Seriously
Identity was brilliant absolutely loved it.
It gets a lot of hate, but I love it too.
Same!
It's a great film.
Feast was such a riot!!!
A botched murder sounds like a failed attempt to murder

Can't help with the movie but as the child of two cancer survivors I wanted to say congrats as to seem to have beaten it! Stay strong, friend.

FEAST is a seriously underrated and fun ride of a film! I do wish they'd taken my suggestion for a 4th installment. Feast 4: Just Desserts!
Jacks Back is another one that does that! Its my favorite switch.
U forgot see no evil. It was definitely an unexpected twist when I first saw it
Seth was the main character of from dusk til dawn from the beginning to the end
2009’s Friday the 13th
That was my first thought
Amazing video Ellie Littlechild from what culture of switching main characters in horror movies, fantastic job.
The Grudge 2 it’s switched between Audrey, Alison, and Jake
I wouldn't say AJ is ever a main character. Wither way, it isn't really a switch since Tess is always the main character.
I LOVE Deathproof!!!
I loved Death Proof! There aren't many movies that i seek out to buy, but that one was worth it for me.
Evil Dead (2013) could have been added to the list.
I like the twists and structure of Feast movies, but I also would like to Men in Black my memories of them.
The fact psycho isn't on this list is a complete travesty
Barbarian never switched it's protagonist. It was always Tess. The others were all potential villains, never any question of them being something else.
The Hunt (2020) is another good one that misleads the viewer into who is going to be the protagonist of the film
I'm binge watching my way through these movies just watched Identity, really liked it
Black Water when the sister who starts off as the main character gets injured
Danganronpa V3 belongs in this list
Psycho should be number one.
I was expecting Terrifier to be on here, ngl
Where the fuck is Psycho?!
Bringing up how rare the double-switch is in #5 after it already happened in #10 & #9 (given that for 9, it switches from the first protagonist, to the second, then to the pair of them) seems kind of silly.
Barbarians main character is Tess right the way through, the other guy is there but never feels like the main character.
Surprised Psycho wasn’t on the list.
Stick with me if you want to live *promptly dies* I always love that shit lol
Ripley was third in command of the Nostromo.
Downrange 2017.....protagonist switch
In Fabric also has a character switch. Unfortunately, the first story was way better than the second.
What about The Guest? David started off as the main character and the it switched to Anna
What about Terrifier?

No "Psycho"?
Seriously? Who thought describing DID as someone's "Imagination" was a good idea? I'm so insulted right now. (Referring to the segment on Identity)
You guys really didn’t include psycho here? For shame
Death Proof sux tho
Iiiiiiii'mmmm pretty sure Ripley is the protagonist from the start. Being a protagonist has nothing to do with rank.
Death Proof was god awful

"Because Robert Carlisle is an A list star"....lol. not going to say he isn't great, but he's not exactly A-list or well known.
I just want to note that disassociation and multiple personalities are not figment of your imagination. That is actually really irresponsible to say.
