  • I may be kicked out of the group after making this video and this statement. With the rise of the 10MM over the last few years. I have seen a lot of content discuss watered down or lawyered 10MM loads. Though true about some factory loads, this has caused me great concern. I see many reloading and going above book max trying to tun 10MM into a 41 or 44 Magnum.
    With the right components especially slow burning powder. Will enable you to achieve full power 10MM loads.

      It sure is there is even a 4in model. I decided to get the maximum out of the 10mm with the 6in

    In my experience the book loads are not watered down at least with speer. Speer book velocities tend to be lower than what is achieved with the listed bullet and powder charge combination as compared to what is seen in real life, and what hand loader magazine achieves with the same bullet and powder by a significant margin.

    Love me some 10mm. I’d have to go back and look at my data, but I believe using the 180 XTP and Blue Dot powder I’m running about 1400 fps in my Glock 20. Tell you what, this video put a fire under me to get that Glock back out to the range. I’ve definitely been neglecting it. Don’t think I’ve shot it since I was deer hunting in December, and pulled it out to take a pot-shot at a coyote that ran about 40 yards from my stand. Of course I missed, but I may have taken some fur off his under carriage!

  • @876mpr
    @876mpr 2 หลายเดือนก่อน

    Definitely no need to hot rod the 10mm. Even if you do, it’s still just a mid-range .41 magnum power level at higher pressure.

  • @CplSkiUSMC
    @CplSkiUSMC 2 หลายเดือนก่อน

    I was 10mm when 10mm wasn't cool. You can exceed book load, but you have to do so VERY CAREFULLY. I have a 200gr XTP hunting load that gave me Glock smile with the stock barrel at max, but at .2gr over max in my 6" Lone Wolf barrel performed safely with no pressure sign.

    • @Dayattherange
      @Dayattherange  2 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Again I do not recommend brother because in my humble opinion some these loads with fast burning powder in 10MM is spiky and peak pressure can happen with just .2 over. Though you are a seasoned reloader and like I said probably know what components to choose. That even means the freedom pill they are not all created equal. I have seen some drive 10MM really hard and when I tested their rounds in gel in front of them they were blown away. Where my loads though some hot but very safe was slower than theirs by 75fps had better penetration. They were stunned I was not. Because of the components they were using were not up to the task. The projectile they were using could not handle the speed they were pushing and it forced the hollow point to open very fast which slowed it down and traveled only 8inches into the gel. Where my slower round opened up as it should retained it's weight and traveled 19inches.

      @@Dayattherange Roger that Top. I do it very carefully and sneak up on it like a cat sneaks up on a bird. Blue Dot is my favorite 10mm powder and I needed to hit 1200fps with that 200gr XTP to have the velocity needed to make legal limit for a handgun hunting in Wyoming. Wyoming's requirement is very high, the expanding projectile must retain 500 ft/lbs of energy at 100 yards to be legal. 1200 fps in the ballistic app still retained 500 ft/lbs at a hundred yards with that 200gr XTP but the stock barrel wouldn't cut the mustard, but the match chamber in the Lone Wolf is a tighter and more supporting chamber and held the load very safely. You're right in that if you're not an experienced hand loader you probably shouldn't play around with those +P loadings.

  • @mtower235
    @mtower235 2 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

    If your book doesn’t get you to the original load specs then the book is wrong and using the wrong powders. It’s a 10mm not a 40SW. Stay safe

    • @Dayattherange
      @Dayattherange  2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      When you say Original which original are you talking about lol. Col Cooper's vision was a 170gr pill at 1300fps. Normal came along to improve upon and magnamize the round which tore up 1911's.

    The 10mm was designed to shoot 200 to 220 grain bullets at an honest 1200 to 1250 fps. After the FBI adoption revealed that most members couldn't handle full power loadings, the FBI came up with their performance standards for a "10mm lite" loading. This tickled S&W to no end because they could meet that standard of (10mm lite) performance in their 9mm frame (no need to develop a large frame now). Thus, the 40 S&W was born.
    With the 40 now available and in a standard frame size, a bunch of LEO's adopted the 40.
    In the meantime, that adoption by the FBI saved the 10mm from joining the obsolete list (thank you, FBI). The complaints about "weak light factory loads" aren't actually valid. Actually, the light loadings are meeting the established FBI loading for a "10mm lite," which coincidentally is similar to the 40 S&W. Has nothing to do with lawyers - merely a decision to choose one set of parameters vs. another.
    So, label reading is, indeed, required now. Full power loadings will meet or exceed 1200 fps with 200 grain bullets. Anything less than that and you are getting 10mm lite."

      @Dayattherange  2 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      It originally visioned as 170gr to 200gr. This story has changed over the years it wasn't the recoil is was the large frames for a 10mm that small hands could not handle.

    • @kirkboswell2575
      @kirkboswell2575 2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @Dayattherange - I was reading that it was recoil at the time. But I'd certainly believe there was an issue with large frames and small hands. The changing story over time probably means that both were a factor.

    • @Dayattherange
      @Dayattherange  2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@kirkboswell2575 How and why the story changed I am not sure why. The most prevalent one is 10MM recoil and FEMALES not being able to handle it so higher drop out rate at the academy. I was lucky enough to be stationed at Quantico Va. Most people hear Quantico and think FBI not knowing it is a Marine Corps Facility that the FBI happens to be located on. Plenty of access to ranges and training materials and not far from DC being there right outside of Woodbridge VA. I was lucky enough to be stationed there and read some of the official reports that read large frame pistols and small hands were a factor in first pass qualifications. It mentioned nothing about male or female. Unfortunately I was to dumb and young to sit down and study the whole thing because there was a big world out there to explore so I was doing other things. Lost opportunity I wish I had back.
