U missed all the main spots there at. Right off sante fe past 59 to the left there's a big encampment. Near the d st. Shelter. Along bear creek. Along spots of black rascal, but u need a bike to access. Behind along home Depot area. Near the recycling centers. Near the old hospital. Down random alleys. Behind staples. Behind old Albertsons, am/pm on olive. Trust me there's a lot around Merced.

I flirted with homelessness for a while in Merced. I lived in a camper behind my brother's house. I rode around with my bike and trailer collecting cans and hustling for money, mainly for drugs. Over time I did more and more illegal things until I quit making excuses and feeling sorry for myself. I found a drug program in Fresno, did the program and stayed in Fresno for about a year and a half. I took accountability for myself and cleaned my act up. I work now, 8 years clean and sober Aug 29th. I'm doing ok by the grace of God. AA and NA help, and church.

There are many programs avaliable in the City of Merced...alot of the homeless choose to reject them because they don't want to follow the rules set up by the organizations. I used to work there and heard from both sides. Some just don't want the help! I saw that too.

I used to be homeless in merced. My camp was on the side of the on ramp for the g st on ramp to 99. That area has been all cleared out now. I got attacked by meth users and I was arrested and convicted of a felony. I worked my booty off, got help from worknet and got my class A license. I'm now making 6 figures.

Oh my! this is my city....I regularly feed the homeless, and a lot of them are near the railroad tracks, under overpasses, near grocery stores and in the wooded areas by the freeway...there are so many, but they are not out in the open during the sunny hot weather. There is only one small shelter here...we really need more! There are a few camp areas behind stores, businesses...and they usually are there in the evening....groups of people are in the park areas with tents...you are only seeing a few homeless people that are alone. I have a heart for the homeless and I'm glad your channel just popped up! granny here to sub to you and support your channel...thank you for awareness video!

You are 100% right about that, I've seen a unmarked bus drop off about a dozen in front of Power sports. I've also seen Madera County Sheriff's drop off individuals right off the 99. Most find themselves under underpasses and culverts just South near and around the 99.

This video frustrated me, because there is actually quite a large homeless population here. I moved here from Oakland 18 years ago, and I too was thinking there were no homeless people. Was I wrong!!!! On 59, on Santa Fe, on the Southside. Also, Merced has lots of alley ways. You'll see an abundance of homeless people there. Just 2 weeks ago when we were having a horrible heatwave, my daughter and I packed some bag lunches and water, and we went out to feed the homeless. There were so many, we ran out of food, and we had over 200 bag lunches. There's also lots, LOTS of mental illness and horrible health issues here. Bad water quality, etc. CANCER is out of control here, I recently retired from the only hospital in the entire county. Please come back, and take a closer look. I appreciate what you're doing 🙏🏽🙏🏽🙏🏽

I was in Merced for a couple days last month. Stayed at a the El Capitan Hotel on Main Street (really cool historic hotel all renovated). I walked all over downtown going to places to eat plus the multiplex theater on Main St. I really didn't see too many homeless. I lived in Merced in the 1990s and of course back then you saw almost no homeless - it was rare outside big cities. My family has been in that area since my grandparents moved there in the 1940s. I have nothing but good memories of Merced. Living there for years, getting my associates from Merced College, big family gatherings. Plus now as I've gotten older my parents are buried there so I visit their graves regularly. Merced is home base to me even though I don't live there anymore and I'll always stick up for it.

Two things. There is a faster route than down 99. I moved here from San Jose last year. You are in wrong part of town to find homeless. The local law will roust them. In Atwater there was a big camp but it was shut down. Nothing like San Jose.
Next time get off highway and go back under it on V Street. Turn RIGHT on 15th, past Costco and around the Smart and Final you will find most. I like it out here far better than San Jose, which has gone to hell

I've been actively searching for a close friend of mine from ?Merced since last year. They called me last Aug but I missed their call and haven't been able to get ahold of them since. I could tell by the sound of their voicemail that they sounded distressed.
They've been completely absent from social media. Which is highly uncharacteristic. I reached out to several fam members but have been able to talk with only one so far. They told me they haven't heard from my friend in over a year (alarming af!). That time my friend told the fam memeber they are living under a bridge but refused help and invite to hangout.
I'm on the other side of the country. I feel the urgency to drive there and search for them but can't due to my car being broken down and not enough funds.
Every single day I reach out to all their social accounts I know of. Trying to find any public record of arrest or anything else. I've even been skimming the national unidentified site. It's difficult being so far away.
I pray to God they're still here with us. Cause this internet silence has me extremely extremely concerned.

Absolutely. I've (actually, mom ,Alicia) is writing this) been on the up side and down side of this. Im grateful and blessed to have seen both sides. Homelessness is a subjective term; with a lot of negative conatations(?) It would be nice to live in a society where if a body chooses to not root in a conformed dwelling, great. But circumstances change. We should be able to live a life as good as possible without a threat of losing your home if you lose your job or domestic violence, etc., Maybe I'm a dreamer. Maybe we should all have dreams of a better life in order to see it through. Just a rambling of a dreamer. God bless

    Beautiful town.
    They constantly tear down encampments.
It’s not tolerated here at all.
We also have a lot of good resources. Our Mayor Matthew Serratto makes a point to keep Merced clean and the homeless get help. Some slip threw the cracks.

it's so surreal to see my county in a video we don't even get recognition almost never. I'm from Livingston CA (passing Merced , Atwater, Winston) which is part of the Merced County. I go to Merced for Medical and College. I was there last two weeks ago the areas you passed I saw only a couple of homeless which means they probably migrated to those areas within the two week span. I do recall seeing homeless near the General Medicine Clinic area and the Fahrens Park/Merced Mall area. ..but the homeless aren't even as present. My town in Livingston never had homeless till the last four years when they started to move here and it's awful. From what I've seen my county is more of a migratory stop for the homeless as I keep seeing different each time I pass by. I'd say Fresno, La, San Francisco, Sacramento and bigger cities are way worse than us

Merced is a great place to live. I moved to the valley from San Jose 20 years ago. California in general has a homeless problem. Its all over the state now. There are many resources and programs here in Merced to combat this. Mental health and drug abuse fuels the homeless problem in Ca. I have traveled all over Ca the past several years and it is all over the state. Bad politics and no funding for mental health is a big contributor.

I have a homeless "friend" here in Fresno CA. He does recycling, meaning he goes through local area dumpsters for what he can recycle to financially support himself. He is an very nice guy, came from a nice home, always leaves his dumpster areas super clean after he has gone through them. I often engage in conversation with him, offer him cold sodas, invite him in for dinners, showers, occasionally give him small amounts of cash.
One thing, though: he is drug-addicted and seems satisfied with his addiction and homeless life style. Does not seem motivated to change. There may be a point where compassion runs out and tough love starts.

I've heard there is a homeless encampment on DST but I'm not sure where. Ive been homeless since 2016, this is due to the fact that we have no income and cannot afford to rent, we have been moved all over the city. We have lived in fields,in bamboo, in abandoned houses, we lived in RV's and tents and under a few different bridges As of now and since Jan 2022 we are under a bridge but not the 99 freeway we are out of the city and out of sight. No body can see our spot and we keep out of sight. I go to stores and other places but you will never know I'm homeless because I don't look like I am. I ride a bike and I don't dress fancy but I'm clean and don't carry lots of stuff with me, sometimes a backpack but that's all. As far as the shelter or the mission is concerned they do a good job and try very hard to accommodate but in my case as in a great many others we have belongings and pets that the shelter will not allow us to bring. I get it there just isn't room for everything and pets are sometimes a bit hard to contain. I think Merced is actually better than slot of cities I've seen. Look up videos of homeless in Los Angeles or Seattle or Portland or even as close as Sacramento and San Francisco it's frightening to see how some of those people live.Thank you for shedding light on the situation as it is going to keep getting worse as our country is declining every single day. I just looked closer at your channel and see that you have seen other cities sorry if I didn't give you credit for knowing what is going on in this State thanks again for your concern

(Merced residents) - If you log into a site called---- Merced connect----- the police will run them off. Don't get me wrong. If they didn't steal , break into cars like they just did INTO MINE LAST NIGHT and kept their areas clean and orderly . it would be more tolerable , I understand that they are going through rough times for various reasons , but we have rights too and specially we as home owners who have purchased expensive homes in the immediate areas where they've recently started to camp out have rights too that are being violated by them being there and doing the things they are doing!

514 (not exact) Childs Ave, there is a large camp... just outside city limits/jurisdiction of Childs Ave.
Under BearCreek bridge at 16th street.
Under Childs Ave overpass at SB 99
Along RR tracks paralleling SB Hwy 99 just past Childs Ave.
    Applegate Park.
Black Rascal Creek, north of OliveAve at Hwy 59
Me? I am compassioned out. I am tired of these people trashing my town. Wasting my tax dollars wiping their rears. I am all for a camp patrol, stopping the camps from developing. Just try doing a cleanup... buckets of urine & feces, needles all over mixed with all types of garbage.

What is the reason for doing this? There is a lot of homeless people in merced but they're like little communities in different spots. Not right of the freeway but by the park, mental health, cemetery. But do you help these people or are you just showing them off? We know people are homeless but their not tourist attractions. Have a purpose behind this.

I live in merced, moved here 2yrs ago from monterey county where I worked as a social worker for adult services.
Its not as bad here in Merced as it is in the cities of Monterey, Salinas and, Marina, CA which are in monterey county.
The old fort ord located in the city of Marina houses a whole community of homeless people who live in the old abandoned military bunkers. I know cause my husband and I lost our rental during CV and had no where to go so we parked our very old RV to live out there 3mo until we were able to move here to Merced.
I know first hand what its like to struggle. We had no running water, no electricity plus, we had 3 dogs.
At the time I was working as a social worker in the city of Marina so that helped but, as you can see, it doesn't matter your job or social status, when $h!t happens, it happens to anybody.
We saw and experienced the hardships that come with homelessness, a very humbling experience.

I came to Merced area when I was stationed at Castle Air Force base in 1986. I raised my kids here & taught them to give back to the community by giving g food to hungry people, never lying, stealing or disrespecting other people or their property. They painted off graffiti with me & didn't complain when I let a few people over the years stay a short time in our yards. They have been disappointed along with me when I donated good clothing & a friend donated a quilt & went back a couple weeks later to find them piled in trash heaps because they needed to be washed. When interviewing some of the people from the "camp" I found that most there were sent there after leaving jail because they were registered sex offenders. Some with ankle monitors. That was over 10 years ago. Since then a church in Merced lost it's building & sold its property because the city of Merced passed a no camping within city limits law & the church defied it, allowing homeless to camp in their parking lot. Then the homeless left their garbage piling up on the property instead of using the dumpsters provided. The homeless that wanted to work got help getting jobs & getting housing. That left between 10 & 20 that didn't want to work, just wanted a handout & became unhappy with the church expecting them to go to church or let them even pray for/with them. These refused to leave the church property & with the legal issues from the city, the property was cleared by police & fenced off so the homeless wouldn't be able to stay there. The no camping law is still in effect, the shelter on D street still has people lining up, but mostly in the winter months. There are cooling centers for days that are over 102 degrees & the bus is free(& cool) until the end of September. I ride Amtrak often & Merced has had a lot of improvement as seen from the train. Stockton, however; has NOT improved their homeless situation, which is extremely disgusting from not only the Amtrak, but also when driving through in a car. I can also say that Portland, Oregon isn't a nice place to see from the train OR by car on the freeway as far as the homeless problem is concerned. The homeless can wander from their tents straight into traffic on the freeway with no fence barrier in many places in Portland, while right across the river in Vancouver, Washington there are barely any homeless to fend off. There were some downtown in Vancouver, but you have to go to the right places to find them.

The other three seasons are much more moderate. It almost never snows in the Central Valley.
Not a few Central Valley homeless folks migrate over to the California coast in summertime, where summertime temperatures usually reach only into the 70s, and then they migrate back to the Central Valley in winter, when nighttimes get chilly along the coast, but both daytime and nighttime remain very comfortable in the Central Valley.
