- During the Russian invasion of Ukraine, the expected large-scale Russian air campaign to establish air superiority did not materialize. Instead, Russian formations conducted strikes in smaller numbers against targets near the Ukrainian borders. Ukrainian mobile surface-to-air missile systems started inflicting losses on Russian aircraft. The Russian Air Force appeared unprepared for a large-scale campaign aimed at suppressing and neutralizing enemy air defense systems. Furthermore, they struggled to coordinate complex and extensive formations, which could have leveraged the strengths of their diverse and modern fleet of fast jets to compensate for weaknesses. This unforeseen weakness has been a major contributing factor to Russia's failure in attaining air superiority over Ukraine.

1. Because Ukraine has the excellent S300, BUK and other Russia AD technology. 2. Russia does dominate East Ukraine skies by and large. 3 Russia is not risking the bulk of its air assets in anticipation of highly possible war with NATO.
I think Russian pilots are better educated & informed than even Russian Navy. The Air Force seems loyal to Russia, not Putin or the Federation Government. Let's hope so. Russian Air Force controls most of Putin's nuclear weapons

Russians save their aircrafts for the conflict with NATO. The less the Russians use their aircraft, the less NATO can anticipate on tactics when used fullscale.

1. SAMs make manned aircrafts useless over hostile enemy space. It is a trend already clearly established. Aircrafts are mere missile trucks to carry missiles fast to their launch location from far off storage fields. It is most significant for Russian doctrine, huge landmass, large tactical nuclear stockpile, Huge HEU stockpile to make nukes from. The role of airforce is a. To survive thus air to air capabilities I. E. Defeat enemy air raids that penetrate b. To deliver/launch tactical nukes 2000 km away from the zone of destruction that's it nothing more.
B. The stealth is not that necessary for the aircraft itself but for the smaller missile like kh 102. With a real reasonable cost of
5 million each, range of 3000km and a 200 kiloton warhead made from just 40kg HEU Russia can place an army of 6000 such nuclear missiles at cost of just 30 billion dollars in just 10 years from merely 240 kT of HeU which is 1/3 of their total stockpile. A perfect number of tactical nukes to prevent any invasion dispersed all over russia and deliverable at supersonic speed from anywhere to anywhere. Thus a perfect defence shield against any conventional war.
3. This is a war to break the nationalistic ukrainian will power and to keep that nation from ever be able to be a staging ground for Nato offensive. Without breaking the back of Russian armed forces. It is meant to be fought with artillery. And such massive bloodshed is expected in contested space, kherson city beyond dnipro or Kharkhiv were not contested at all, they were given up on first sight of trouble. drones and asymmetrical warfare capabilities make Blitz impossible in contested spaces.

A lot of their newer air frames are just Soviet air frames that have been modernized a bit.
This is NOT the war that Russia needs to attrition it's air offensive capability - that phase of the war, can only begin if Ukraine receives more advanced western assets, or the war escalates to include Nato direct involvement....
There is a good reason why nobody is giving Ukraine the same assets-the strategic logic remain consistent across all the involved parties...
I don't understand why nobody is pointing out as a reason for such a failure, the fact Ukraine is backed by USA surveillance and intelligence, most probably NATO RC-135 fleet, MQ-9 drones and probably satellite intelligence are monitoring any RU aircraft round the clock. In addition, air defence is quite massive and mobile, and RU has failed in SEAD operations since the beginning. It's misleading to refer to air campaign against Iraq or Afghanistan, much weaker opponents and not backed by any major power. Also use of stealth planes such as F-117, helped a lot the USA. Russia does not or cannot use the SU-57 into Ukraine skies.
Ukraine's air defense advantage is that it has Russia made S300, BUK, and Pantsir AD systems.

The air is probably the biggest russian advantage because of the aircraft count. The ground is full of UK forces, so russians can't win without the air IMO.
USA has a long experience in bombing things. Syria was not a good training for russians because the opposition wasn't equipped.

Why does the Western Propaganda Machine fail to see that the only losses of Russian aircraft were due to air defense but at the same time, the Russian air force has yet to lose a single air-to-air combat interdiction. The Ukrainians have excellent pilots, but their equipment and their level of competence is no match for the Russians. And if Ukraine gets the F-16, they will all suffer the same fate. And remeber that Ru did only one mobilisation, before they fought with around 100 000 troops + LNR/DPR + Wagners. UA had at least 1 000 000. Count how many soldiers per day You have to kill/wound to achieve victory. This are just staggering numbers. It is just unthinkable that peace which was almost signed around march last year was broken by the west, Boris mainly. That is just pure scandal, all what is, could be prevented with those peace negotiations.
And have in mind, current UA offensive is done with NATO equipment, and NATO training... look how it goes, they didn`t even reached FIRST line of defense. And there is quite few more of them in line.

What is Air superiority? when engaged with adversary planes and the opponent have no quantities left? Ukraine have 20-30 left only at its best..around 80% were destroyed in air and mostly on ground during the first week or two of the war..
Air superiority is to fly over Kyiv and other big cities to bomb targets there!? why you would risk planes in a heavily SAM guarded areas when you can use long range cruise missiles, drones and most of all hypersonic missiles!?
Russians on the other hand fly something like hundred sorties per day but in a close combat support missions because it is the thing which matters the most currently and they have no opponents on the other side as most of the Ukranian SAM systems are around the big cities and outside the range of the russian artillery and outside of those nasty smart guided drones like Lancet and similar..
So my point is, when I see a videos like this and I see it quite frequently lately, it makes me laugh honestly as it has nothing to do with reality and with military logic, amateurism at its best..

The biggest mystery is not why Russia has no air superiority, but HOW BADLY the western support turned out to be for Ukraine if they have NO NAVY and they can't even control their own skies... which can only be considered "contested" at best.
The western governments after failing to recognize the war and turning a blind eye on it after 2014 are risking HEAVY CONSEQUENCES for the European continent. And they still FAIL to acknowledge... stepping up support which is still INSUFFICIENT when it's clear they should have sent in troops and all kind of equipment much earlier.
