  • The Shimano Ultegra 14000 XTD and Ci4 XTC / XSC come with spool line reducers. I show you how to calculate how much line to put with each reducer and how I put new line on these reels to get the perfect line lay.
    Also from CARP FISHING EXPLAINED:

    3️⃣ Secrets of the lakebed: • A close look BELOW the...
    The Shimano Ultegra 14000 XT-D and the Ultegra CI4+ XTC / XSC reels come with different sizes of spool reducers. The Ultegra 14000 XT-D has 2x line reducers (10000/3500) and the Ultegra 14000 CI4+ XTC / XSC has 3x line reducers (10000/6000/3500)
    When you put new line on your Shimano Ultegra 14000, you need to work out which line reducer to use based on the diameter of your line and the size of your spool.
    In this video, I’m spooling up with ESP Syncro XT Loaded in 10lb / 0.30mm. It comes in a spool of 1,000 meters and I want to put 300m of line per spool for long distance fishing. I also want to use 6m. of braided leader of 0.35 and I have some backing line (Berkley Big Game) of 0.38mm. Using an application called CalcLine, I can see that I need to put 12m. of backing line on in order to fill the spool perfectly.
    In the second part of the video, I show you how I spool my backing line and mainline on the reels.
    I then spool up another reel with the ESP Syncro XT Loaded in 18lb / 0.40mm diameter. This line is for short to medium range fishing and I don’t need to put a huge amount of line on. Using the CalcLine app and if I put the 6000 spacer on, I can see that I can put 190m. of line straight on without any backing line.

    Watch next: How to set up your carp rod on the bank th-cam.com/video/j_NSmA2CtQQ/w-d-xo.html
    This info doesn't appear in the video but is taken from the Shimano website:
    * The 3500 reducers take 200m of 0.20 mono
    * The 6000 spacers take 240m of 0.35 mono
    * The 10000 reducers take 400m of 0.35 mono
    Someone pointed out that the app I reference in the video, CalcLine, isn't on the Apple store, it's an Android app. I’ve found another site that has a similar line capacity calculator that works in any browser. Head on over here and you’ll be able to run your own calcs: www.pattayafishing.net/fishing-reel-line-capacity-estimator/

      Hi Marcus, thanks very much for the feedback mate it's greatly appreciated. The only thing that I'd change are the drag washers. The factory washers cause the spool to vary in tension as a fish pulls line. Apparently carbon washers solve this problem. TBH I swapped to backwinding last year as I feel this gives me better control so it's not an issue for me. Line lay is amazing and they are super smooth. Hope you love them as much as I do! Hi Dan, glad you liked the video! I started with the classic Shimano bait runner reels and they are great for small waters. The modern front drag reels are lightweight and very easy to use. I don’t slacken the clutch off much anyway as I always fish semi locked up. All I have to do is wind down and gently lift into the fish and they rarely drop off. You need a really solid bankside setup to fish like this though ;)

    • @matthewcollinsangler

      Hi mate, It's been a very long time since I’ve done any sea fishing but modern carp angling looks and feels a lot more like seas fishing nowadays with big (4-5oz) leads being cast and retrieved a very long way. I’ve had my Shimano XTC’s for about 9 months now and they’ve seen a fair bit of action. For me they are good for anything from 10lbs to 100lbs and have the power to crank in leads from 120m over rocky terrain as fast as I can wind so I see no reason why they wouldn't suit your needs. The XTD model has been done to a price and is not as stiff and well made as the XTC model. The XSC is targeted at the surf fishing market although, as far as I can see, all three reels are saltwater rated (double check that yourself though). These reels are my fourth set of Shimano’s and the XTC’s are the best I’ve had. If you spend silly money you can buy a better reel but for me these are the sweet spot in terms of price/performance. I’ve done the Daiwa thing and I won’t buy another Daiwa reel. Hope that helps. All the best with your fishing. Cheers, Matt.

    • @matthewcollinsangler
      @matthewcollinsangler  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi James, thanks for commenting. Glad you liked the video! If you look in the original box that the reels came in, you’ll find a little packet of washers with instructions on how to use them. If you can find this packet, follow the instructions and it’s probably going to tell you to add or remove washers from underneath the spool (I can’t remember which will solve your top loading problem lol). You’ll need to remove all the line first (wind it onto a spare spool perhaps?) then reload it after you’ve made the necessary adjustment. It’s all a bit of trial and error but it should be possible to get them completely parallel. I’m no expert on this because I’ve never actually had to do it but it should work! Good luck, Matt.

      The washers are for placing on the spindle, underneath the spool. These washers enable you to tune the line lay on the reel. All modern Shimanos are shipped with a neutral (flat) line lay, some anglers will want to change this profile to be forward tapered or rearward tapered. Personally, I’ve never used these washers, I’m happy with the flat profile.

      Hi Marko, thanks for commenting. The rod I used in this video is a Harrison Aviator Plus (3lbs 6oz TC) custom built. Personally I haven't used a bait runner reel for carp fishing for 20 years. I always fish semi locked up so the bait runner facility is unnecessary with a quick drag reel like the one I'm using here. There's also a weight penalty with any bait runner reel. Less weight means I can cast further with less effort. So the choice depends on how you want to fish. Hope that helps. Cheers, Matt.

    Hi Mark great Info. I’ve just bought some of these and the line I have bought is fox Exocet tapered in 12lb 0.3mm and some syncro XT in 18lb 0.4mm . So what do you think would be the best spacers. The tapered line can’t be cut coz it’s tapered both ends . Any advice would be great thank you .

    • @matthewcollinsangler
      @matthewcollinsangler  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi Matt, I’ll start with the Syncro XT. Personally I used the 6000 spacers with the 0.40 (18lbs) as I didn't need to load more than 200m on my spools. The max range I need to fish the 0.40 is 100m so 200m is fine for me. If I wanted/needed to fish further with the 0.40, I’d go for the 10000 spacers. If you bought the XTD and not the XTC then you won’t have 6000 spacers. You can either buy these separately or load the 0.40 on them. If that seems like too much line then add some backing line. I’ve never used these ready made lines with tapered leaders myself but I know that what you can do is this: Install a pair of 6000 spacers as they will hold a fair amount of 0.30 mono. Then load a spool (with the fat end of the taper on first) and max that out to the lip of the spool. Once you're happy, unload this from one spool onto a fresh spool and you’ll end up with a fully loaded perfectly brimmed spool with your tapered leader at the business end. Don’t forget that depending on the situation, you can cut down the fat end somewhat. Most of these come with 10 or even 15m of thicker material. This might be what you need in a snaggy situation but if you’re looking for max range I only want 6m of leader. That’s just enough to take the load of a full blooded cast. The trouble is that if you cut your tapered leader down to 6m, you're not going to have any spare if you need to chop any off. You might want to start at 8m, that'll give you a little extra to play with. That’s one of the reasons I don’t use these readymade lines with tapered ends. Hope that helps mate. Cheers, Matt.

    Hi Matt using the spool reducers also improves line lay, another thing that also improves line lay is using a backing line with the same or smaller diameter (if you using a lot of backing line) than the line you are putting over the top IE your main line.

    • @matthewcollinsangler
      @matthewcollinsangler  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi Richard, as far as I understand, when you buy a new reel from Shimano, each one has had the appropriate number of washers added or taken away to achieve a perfectly parallel line lay. This is because of how the manufacturing tolerances stack up in each finished reel. So the answer to your question is no, I didn't add or remove any washers because when I loaded the reels, the line lay was perfectly parallel. If it wasn't TBH I’d return the reel as there may be more at fault with it that could cause problems down the line. Not that I’ve ever had that with any Shimano reel though. Hope that helps. Cheers, Matt.

      Tom Mercer
      Hi Tom, the 3500 spacer with hold 200m of 0.20 braid which is okay but 0.28 is considerably thicker and according to my calculations you’d only get 102m on there. I don’t know what you are using the reels for but for me that’s nowhere near enough. The 6000 spacers hold 240m of 0.35 so with 0.28 line you’ll get 375m on them. Bear in mind that it's best to underfill braid to stop the dreaded wind knots. I’d take 25-50m off the number so you’re then in the region of 325m-350m which is more useful. Braid normally comes on 300m spools so you won’t need much backing to fill a spool to the level you need. Perhaps stick 30-40m of 0.35 line on there and go for it. Hope that helps, Cheers, Matt.

I cannot imagine a situation where you’d want to do this. I’d suggest you use either the 10000 spacer which has a capacity of 392m of 0.35 or a 6000 spacer which will hold 240m of 0.35. • @matthewcollinsangler
      @matthewcollinsangler  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi Peter, the 3500 spool reducers hold 200m of 0.20 braid. If the braid you have is 0.28 then you’ll only get 102m on the spool. Which won’t be good for anything. As a minimum I would use the 6000 reducers which will hold 375m of the braid. Don’t forget that it's very important not to overfill your spools with braid. I underfill mine by 2-3mm to avoid frap ups. If you have 300m of the 0.28 I would load it straight onto the 6000 reducers and see how that looks. Best of luck, Matt.

    Hi Matthew
    I have just bought a set of ci4’ XTC’s for myself. But i have read some mixed reviews of them. Have you experienced any problems with the quality? Line guards snapping etc?
    Have you felt the need to replace washers and so?
    - Carl

    • @matthewcollinsangler
      @matthewcollinsangler  ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Carl, I’m happy to report that I’ve had zero issues with my XTC’s since I bought them over a year ago and I’ve used them a lot! I can definitely see how some anglers have snapped the line guard. If the line does go behind the spool and you continue to wind the handle this will put a lot of load on the guard and it will either force it out of the groove, or break it. This is not a failure of the product or the design, it's just not being used carefully.
      The drag washers supplied with the reel are not the best and they don’t apply an even amount of drag force. You’ll find that if you play carp off the clutch, the spool will spin, then stop until more force is applied by you, or the carp. I can see how this would annoy some anglers. Personally for me, it’s not an issue as I don’t use the clutch for playing fish. Watch this video to learn why: th-cam.com/video/AGuXj4xKDow/w-d-xo.html
      I’ve not bothered to change the washers but I know it can be done. I have no idea whether this is a successful work around for the issue or not I’m afraid.
      Personally I’m very happy with the reels. The line lay is fantastic and they are super smooth. They are also lightweight and robust so what’s not to love? I’ve yet to find anything better and I’ve spent twice the money on some Daiwa’s that turned out to be all talk and no trousers. Cheers, Matt.

    • @matthewcollinsangler

      Hi Mike, Shimano makes it very hard to find this information for sure but the way that spool sizing works is that any Shimano reel with a 6000, 8000, 10000 or 14000 size is directly comparable to another. I’m not sure where you got your numbers from but what you say isn't quite correct (sorry). Here’s the full list of line capacity for Shimano reels:
      14000 holds 550m of 0.35
      10000 holds 392m of 0.35
      6000 holds 240m of 0.35
      3500 holds 200m of 0.20
      This information also applies to the spool reduction spacer system. Hope that clears things up for you. Cheers, Matt.

      Hi David, thanks for commenting and for your support. I'm glad that you liked the video. I used to tie the different lines together but it always creates a bump in the line lay so I decided just to tape them in place instead. As long as you are loading plenty of line onto the spool and not fishing at massive range, then the risk of this tape ever coming close to the surface should be very low (or even non-existent). Hope that helps. Happy spooling and enjoy the reels. I love mine :) Cheers, Matt.

      Hi, I’m not sure what you mean by grip and what that has to do with braid but the Shimano Ultegra 14000 xtc’s that I used in this video come with a 3500 spacer that is specifically designed to work with braid and can fit 200m of 0.20. That’s fine for a spod/marker reel but if you are using 0.30 braid at long range then you’d be better off using one of the other sets of spacers. They all work with braid. Hope that helps. Thanks Rhys! So the 14000 xtd without any spool reducers holds 550m of 0.35. If you run the numbers on 0.37 that comes down 492m per spool. You've only got 333m per spool to play with so that's no good. If you add the 10000 spool reducers that comes out at 351m of 0.37 which is still too much. • @matthewcollinsangler
      @matthewcollinsangler  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi Jay, so if you want to put 300m of 0.37 you’ll need to use the 10000 spacers. The 3500 spacers are for low diameter braid etc. The line capacity with the 10000 spacers in place is quoted by Shimano as 350m of 0.35. If I put that info. and the line you want to put into the CalcLine app, it says that if you use 0.37 you can fit on 313m of mainline onto each spool. If you are doing 3 spools, that’s OK (just) if you’ve bought 1000m of line as there is 333m available per spool.
      If you only have 900m to play with, you’ll have to add some backing line before you put on the 300m of 0.37 or your spools won’t be filled properly. Use the Calcline app if you need to add backing: just enter the diameter of the backing line you’re using, then enter a target amount of main line of say 290m, then add the amount of leader (or not) that you normally use and it will then tell you how much backing line to use. Don’t forget to count the turns when you’re spooling as it’s easy to misjudge and under/overfill the spools.
      Hope that makes sense! Cheers, Matt.

    Some braids will slip on the spool, so that's the only reason I use mono backing. I noticed you didn't make any knots on the spool, nor between your backing and the main line. Why?

    • @matthewcollinsangler
      @matthewcollinsangler  หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Because I was loading 300m of 0.30 mainline over the top and I never fish more than 120m distance, there’s absolutely no way that the backing line is going to come into play so there’s no need to tie a knot so I taped it. If I’m fishing at a long distance and there’s a risk of running out of line then absolutely I’d tie a knot.

      Hi mate, I’m going to assume that you have the 14000 size as possessedopposed to the 5500. It also depends on how much 0.35mm mono you want to load. The 1000 spacers will accept 392m which is quite a lot but if you are fishing at long range with a boat then you might need that. The 6000 spacers might be closer to what you need as they hold 240m of 0.35mm but you don’t get the 6000 spacers as standard on the XTD reels so you’ll either have to buy them separately or use the 10000 spacers and add some cheap backing line first before loading the 0.35mm. Sure it will cast a very long way but personally I wouldn't use anything that thin without a very good reason. The thinnest braid I use is 0.25 and that's for spodding and marker work. I understand that it's rated at 32lbs but if you can achieve 50% knot strength you'll be doing very well. In terms of spacers the 3500 spacer are the ones you need and they are only available with the XTC model, not the XTD. The 3500 spacers have a rated capacity of 200m of 0.2mm line so they would hold a whopping 800m of 0.1mm! If you still want to use the 32lb whiplash I'd just load 300m onto the 3500 spacers. Hi Matthew.
    I have a little dilemma.
    I am now the owner of a Shimano Ultegra spod XTD, i have never owned a reel like this before, also in the box were some adjustment washers as they say to help create the "winding shape?
    I was going to put some braded line on tmw, but not sure what i have to do with the washers, if any thing.
    Do i need to do any thing with them? or can i go ahead and fill up my spool.
    Cheers.

    • @matthewcollinsangler
      @matthewcollinsangler  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Ray, I totally understand your dilemma. What these washers do is change how the line goes onto the spool. By default, every Shimano is “factory set” to create a flat profile from the back of the spool to the front of the spool, iI.e. after filling the spool, if you measure the diameter of the loaded line at the back, then at the front of the spool the measurement will be very close if not identical. These winding washers can change the shape of the winding profile from a forward taper (lower diameter at the front), through to a backward taper (higher diameter at the front). I’ve used Shimano of various types for many years and I’ve never felt the need to adjust the winding shape from the factory set flat profile. In others words, load your braid and it should come out flat which works just fine. One word of warning when loading braid is don’t overfill the spool. Braid is very prone to “wind knots” which is when more than one loop of line comes off the spool at a time. If you under fill your spool, you’ll virtually eliminate this risk and will be able to cast hard into even in severe crosswinds. I aim for 1-2mm down from the lip. Don’t forget to add 6m of robust leader material to absorb the force of the cast. Sunset’s Amnesia is an effective and cheap option. Hope that helps, Cheers, Matt.

    I actually found out their is a really easy way to calculate exactly how many reel turns it takes to spool on the line that you want by using a calculator on the internet and some easy math. Check by using the calculator on the internet how much line (of your desired mm) your reel can maximum hold (in meters), you will get a number of meters that represents the lenght of line that reel can hold with the diameter of line that you desire. Now by multiplying that number by 100x if you are calculating meters and 36x if you are calculating yards you will get the lenght in cm or inches respectively The final step is just to take the amount of line that you just converted into cm/inches and devide this with your gear ratio, which is also in cm (most of the time for me anyways). Otherwise devide the amount of inches of your gear ratio. This number is roughly the amount of turns it takes to put on the amount of line(mm) onto the reel you want.
    The most easy example of this I can give is when we pretend the gear ratio of a reel is say 90cm per turn and can hold 320m of 0.30mm mono. I want to put on 1oo meters of line backing (which I calculated beforehand with the 0.30mm etc), that would be 100meters of line, convert that to 100m/100=10.000cm of line. Finally take the 10.000cm and devide by 90cm (gear ratio) and you'll get 111.11111 full cirlcle handle turns. So this means it takes roughly 111/112 turns to put on 100m of 0.30mm mono onto this reel. I hope this example makes it a bit more clearer, since explaining things in english isn't my strong suit haha
    The best thing of this is that it is especially usefull when you want 2 different lines in diameters and/or when you want a backing of some sort on your reels. The other reason I wanted to tell it like this is that I am from the Netherlands and I could'nt find any line calc app of any sort on the app store, so I just used the internet for this.
    Oh and when you want to top of the reel with braid, use the braid calculations (mm) instead of the mono, since it should be a little bit shorter then the calculations with the mono becasue of the lip of the reelspool even though you should always keep checking the line lay when you enter the final stages of spooling up.

      @@matthewcollinsangler Hi Matt, yes I know its a bit blurry I’m sorry haha! But what I actually was saying is using that exact site to figure out how much meters you can put on and using a simple trick by deviding that number of the site (in cm) by your gear ratio in cm. That would be roughly how many turns of your reel it litterally takes. So hopefully this is a bit more clear and you can do this in inches to, just make sure you multiply by 100 if you are using meters and 36 if you are using yards, its important for them to be in the same decimal for the formula to work.

      Hi Gary, so I stopped playing carp on the clutch quite a few years ago so I don’t notice the clutch much in my fishing. I do fish semi-tight clutches though and I find mine spin well when required. I did notice when mine were new that the clutch force varies a fraction as the spools spins so you get a slight variation in tension. A mate of mine had exactly the same so I guess it’s just the way they are. I would have thought that carbon washers would have eliminated this variance but perhaps not. Having had top end Diawa’s I would say the Diawa’s have the best clutches but the Shimano gearing is far superior in smoothness and they are super strong and reliable. I sold my Basia’s after 5 years as I basically killed them (well my catfish had lol.) Personally I wouldn't worry too much. Maybe one day the clutches will be smoother but for now it is as it is I guess? Hope that helps. Cheers, Matt.

But the C14 front drag concept is fairly new to me although I understand the principle and benefits of a front drag in the smooth playing of fish - the main reason for purchasing these reels. My question to you if you could please help me get my head round is;
      How does the front drag system on the C14 relate to the classic bait runner set up?
      Would I be right in assuming that the small wheel within the large silver control is the clutch, and the large silver control is the bait runner function, or Is it the other way round, or is it a combination of both? (as there are only two controls on my C14’s for bait-runner/drag function and standard bait runners have three)
      Basically, having trouble locating instructions for this model. There’s lots of mainly marketing fluff out there saying how good it reel is, but can't find anything that explains how to use it effectively! @@valentinetomin8046 Hi Valentine, no worries mate. It’s what we do here! The transition from baitrunner to quick drag is a big change. I made the switch a long time ago but I remember very well that the transition took some adjusting too! I’ve never owned the Shimano XTB system but I’m familiar with how it works as I’ve had a little play. Personally I prefer the classic and much simpler system of the XTD or the XTC. One knob, short travel from loose to tight. It does all I need.
      I think the best way to understand the Shimano XTB system is to see the silver (outer) knob as a coarse drag adjustment and the smaller (inner) wheel as a finer adjustment. If you fully tighten the large silver knob then this tightens the clutch to the level at which the smaller inner drag is set. Think of this as the playing clutch setting. If you back off the inner it will allow some slip just like the playing clutch does on a bait runner. If you need to make a coarser or quicker adjustment you can also slacken the silver outer knob but bear in mind that one click on this will have a greater effect than one click on the inner.
      To set the reel in a bait runner config just slacken the silver outer by one quarter or one half turn (can’t remember how far it goes lol!)
      Note: I always fish a semi tight clutch as I want to control the carp from the off. See my video here for more info: th-cam.com/video/j_NSmA2CtQQ/w-d-xo.html. Also note that when casting a big distance you need to screw the clutch down very tight so you might need to tighten the inner wheel to the max to achieve this with this system. It’s a personal thing but I do not play carp off the clutch. I explain why in this video: th-cam.com/video/pf1m8FJIP6k/w-d-xo.html
      Right, that's probably enough info for you to digest this time round! Hope it helps you out mate. Cheers, Matt.

      The 3500 spacer is designed for use with braid and can only hold 200m of 0.20 braid. If you try to use the 3500 spacer with 0.33mm mono you’ll only be able to load 73m of line onto each spool which isn't very much.
      So you are going to have to use the 10000 spacers with the 0.33mm mono. The trouble is that the capacity of those spacers is a whopping 444m and you only have 1000/3 = 333m maximum available per spool which will leave you 110m short on every spool. If you are only casting 70 yards then this isn't going to affect your fishing too much but if you want to hit 100 plus then you’ll probably struggle. The solution is to load backing line onto the spool before you load the mainline. I can’t tell you how much to load because I don’t know the diameter of the backing line but if you visit this website and use the advanced calculator then that will help with the maths: www.pattayafishing.net/advanced-fishing-reel-line-capacity-estimator/

      @@gerrygallant9155 Right! Ah you’ve got no bother then mate. The 14000’s with the 10000 spacers will hold 444m of 0.33mm so you have 1000/2 = 500m per spool to play with so that’s 56m per spool spare so even if you need a bit extra to really max them out you’ll be absolutely fine. Best of luck, Matt.

    • @matthewcollinsangler
      @matthewcollinsangler  3 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Hi mate, you don’t mention whether that is mono or braid. 0.24mm is very fine for specimen carp fishing and should only be used by long distance carp fishing experts IMO. The finest mono I use is 0.33. If you still want to use 0.24mm then you could choose the 6000 spacers but those are only available on the XTC model (as featured in this video). If you are using the XTD then you may be limited to the 10000 spacer only (I’m guessing here).
      Let’s say you do have the 6000 spacer, they can hold 240m of 0.35mm. At 0.24mm they hold 510m. That's fine but you are still going to need backing (a lot of it depending on the diameter of the backing line). Without knowing the diameter of the backing line I can’t help you further. You can try this online calculator: www.pattayafishing.net/advanced-fishing-reel-line-capacity-estimator/
      The other option is to use the 3500 spacer (if you have it). The trouble is you’ll only be able to fit 139m of line on, which depending on what you are doing might not be nearly enough. Best of luck, Matt.

    Dear Matthew,
    Where did you find that the capacity of the 6000 reducer is 240 / 0,35? If I look I see 200 / 0,30.
    Nice and clear movie by the way.

    • @matthewcollinsangler
      @matthewcollinsangler  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Dear Ronald,
      Shimano don’t give the capacity for these specific spacers (which is frustrating) and I’ve never found it on their site. However, all shimano reels have a size rating, 6000, 8000 etc and each size holds the same amount of line. So you can look up the line capacity of any 6000 Shimano reel and it’ll tell you how much it holds. For example, a Shimano baitrunner DL6000RB holds 240m of 0.35 line, and the ST6000RB holds exactly the same.
      Hope that helps,
      Matt.

    How much line will I get on my spool of 0.37 with 6000 line reducer spacer

    • @matthewcollinsangler
      @matthewcollinsangler  7 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Hi Lee, the 6000 spacers hold 240m of 0.35mm line so if you are loading 0.37 you’ll get 215m on the spool. If you are only fishing relatively small lakes then this is plenty but for some anglers 215m would not be enough. Cheers, Matt.

    Any idea how much the 3500 reducers hold in 0.35?

    • @matthewcollinsangler
      @matthewcollinsangler  ปีที่แล้ว

      The short answer is not a lot! It’s rated at 200m for 0.20 which works out at 65m at 0.35. You’ll need to use the 6000 capacity spacers as a minimum for 0.35 mono. Cheers, Matt.

    What's the point? I just put 300m of 30 lb mono on mine and I'm not sure if that will be enough, I'd feel better with 500m, so might have to put on some braid under the mono. I live on the coast just north of sydney australia. If your just playing around for skull draggers in little ponds like that, why not just use a big handline and some gloves. It's like getting a mack truck and putting 2 litres in it, crazy.

      Hi mate, I have to say I’m a bit lost with what’s gone wrong for you here. I can only think of 2 possible explanations. 1) The line you are using is not actually 0.35 (mislabelled?). 2) You haven't put 400m on the spool (maybe by miscounting the revolutions??). Once you’ve installed a matching pair of 10000 spacers onto the spool there’s no way that you’d be short. I have an old set of 10000 capacity shimano reels (without spacers) and the capacity is 392m of 0.35. Something somewhere doesn't add up… Don’t know what else to say mate.

      @@justhchuk2865 Ok Yeah it might not sound much but each hundredth of a mm makes a big difference in terms of number of meters. What I’d do might sound a bit mad but go with me! Load some old backing line on top of your new line until it’s exactly where you want it to be. Then tape/tie the end of the backing line onto a fresh (empty) spool. Then transfer that from one reel to another. You’ll end up with a perfectly filled spool then! Take note of how much backing line you needed and you’ll be able to do the next one right first time (hopefully). Hope that helps! Cheers, Matt.

      Doesn't matter either way. You can tape it, or tie it. It’s not going to come under any load unless you get spooled out. If that does happen, whether it’s taped or tied the fish is lost either way.

      Not familiar with the speedmaster. It's only the Ultegra ci4 XTC that comes with a full set of spacers. Not sure whether you can buy a 6000 spacer separately for your reels. For most situations you'll just have to use the 10000 spacer. Nothing wrong with adding some backing line over the top of a 10000 spacer before loading your mainline. Cheers, Matt.
