I’ve been taught the same method because body tubing tends to fray after a few fish caught. The UV resin makes it near indestructable and adds some weight to the head as well. My T-bones hold up well this way
Most strikes happen when the fly pauses and kicks sideways in the water, hence the T Bone name, so the fish actually takes the meat of the fly including the hook most of the time.

Using the new shank jaws at the beginning, then I switch to the large or saltwater jaws to finish.
What size tubing are you using?
my guess is 1/2"- I use mostly 1/4" for spreaders and this is much bigger.
