Why is Cohen involved in Alonso talks at any level? We saw what Cohen did playing GM during his chaotic time running the team from late 2020 through the 2023 season. He's a chaos bomb who has no idea how to build a team for the upcoming year while also planning out the next 4 to 6 seasons.
Left to Stearns, why would Stearns ever bring Alonso back?
Every projection system in existence produces something like this. Fangraphs, 2025:
1B, Vientos, 2.7 fWAR---$1m
1B, Alonso, 2.4 fWAR---$23m-30m
3B, Acuna-Mauricio-Baty, 2.5 fWAR---$800k each.
Not only does signing Alonso for 2025 set tens of millions of dollars on fire by not improving the team at all, there's also the significant opportunity cost of not letting a young player establish himself during the 2025 season as a useful MLB regular. The Mets also have a solid floor under 3B, given that their worst option, Baty, could simply repeat his dismal 2024 season and projecting those 171 PA to 550 PA, his 0.5 fWAR at 3B in 2024 goes to 1.6 fWAR in 2025, and that's fairly close to the team's very worst case. The Mets can also further bolster their floor at 3B by adding as their primary backup IFer someone with the arm to play third regularly, if needed. Btw, that's a big reason they added Madrigal, who in a half-time role at 3B in 2023 was one of the best defenders there in MLB. It's hard to think he'll be their primary backup IFer in 2025, so it tells us a lot that Stearns is paying attention to shoring up 3B after Vientos moves to first by picking up as their _backup IFer's backup_ a guy who was recently one of the best defensive 3Bmen in MLB and is now just 28 compared to, say, Iglesias turning 35.

Pete's a one tool player, and that one tool has shrunk to a .459 SLG, 40th best in MLB.
Btw, he's a 2 fWAR 1Bman whereas Nimmo was a 5fWAR CFer in an era of real scarcity at the position. The Mets ext offer of 7/158m was an outright gift to Pete. One of the most important moments of his life, and he whiffed.
Btw, another way to put this is, if they signed Pete, they wouldn't be signing Pete----they'd be signing the _UPGRADE_ Pete represents over Vientos at 1B and Acuna-Mauricio-Baty at 3B, and that upgrade is at best trivial.
TL;DR -- Everyone wants to play the kids, until it's time to play the kids.

good business ? The Mets talk all this family bullshit when it comes to Juan Soto and when things are good last year but when it comes to Pete Alonso family goes out the window…. Pete Alonso deserves a little more then market value paying a little more for Pete does not make us the Angels lol there is no salary cap in baseball it doesn’t make a difference what we pay him it’s not going to hinder us in anyway we have the richest owner in sports. Show the guy some loyalty he was the only reason people were buying tickets to see this trash ass team for years and he was screaming LFGM when we sucked he deserves to be here for the success and his accomplishments as a met should matter. I’m not saying pay the guy Soto money but make him happy and let the guy come home he’s a met he hits 30 homers a year and plays 160 games in a bad year he’s a top 5 first baseman in the mlb …. Forget the market and all that bullshit Juan Soto wasn’t worth a billion either but that’s what it took to get it done that didn’t make us the angels. He is freaking 29 years old.. yes he dont have the greatest average, but this billionaire owner has made some of us Mets fans retarded morons who overlook players? Pete will go down as homerun king for the Mets, pass Piazza, Wright and all the best Mets by the time he is 29... But he all of a sudden washed up because he wants a big contract?
